    Obscure/unpopular frames used by pros

Box sandwich construction a la HEAD Arthur Ashe series...most likely the RT Used by Johan Kriek for a minute, also.

Steel Racket Nirvana Dunlop Mono Shaft 1972ish

You caught me!!! I actually hadn't given any more thought to this "dream". I found a few pics that look like she's using the twin-shafted Slazenger variant; but nothing with the mono-shaft.

Shorter so we can swing the darned thing...mine's a beast! I've never hit with it...don't want to break the strings since I don't know IF it will fit on my machine OR if I could figure out how to string it!

Funnest out of production Spin Effect rackets

I still have mine; but with the original strings I installed in 1985.

    Chris Evert Autograph woodie

We got string and a few grips, IIRC; but no rackets. Seems like he knocked off the Tremont stringer(NOT an engineering marvel!), as well. I think our owner met ?LynnBob Ray? at a trade show and that's how we ended up with some of his stuff all the way across the country.

Thinking of the Super RQ 1000 thingy

Yonex RQ380 where is the love for Monica Seles racket?

Would have been interesting to see Seles with a 100" racket(I would have voted for a max of 105" IF the tennis gods had asked before letting the horse out of the barn regarding length and hitting area limits back in the dark ages). These things were just huge!

Yeah, we sold them for $30 unstrung(wholesale was $18 IIRC)...in the late-ish '70s. She sold a BUNCH of rackets!!! Blue Star or Rayco Blue Ray looked good in them!!!

Sorry, I just saw this. No idea who HR is. This was well past my rep days in the mid-'80s and I'm drawing a blank.

1986 US Racquet & Shoes Advert

Yeah, the 90 series was an egg!!! Goofy string pattern, too. We sold dozens and dozens of the White Gold 100...what a marshmallow!!!

As vsb said, there was variety in materials(actual variety in most cases, not just a new marketing name for the same old stuff) and the non-integral throat bridge essentially died with the Mag Pro. I can't think of another racket that had that feature that held on longer. There was little...

1986 US Racquet & Shoes Advert

For the youngsters in the group, these ads were referred to as "mail order" . Oddly, one had to CALL the company and talk to a HUMAN to place an order. My largest account was "Sportline of Hilton Head", interestingly headquartered in Greensboro, NC...not particularly close to Hilton Head at all...

I was selling Puma when BB won his first Wimbledon. We sold out of Winners in a flash; but by the time they were delivered to the dealers, BB was using the Super(or at least a Super paintjob) !!!!!

A thousand pardons; but that is a Composite Director. "Tournament" refers to aluminum, IIRC(at least in the US).

    Wilson Sport comparison

There were a few strings constructed that way...that particular red/white number looked even cheaper than Ashaway Pro-Fected. Super "multi" filaments, almost like a fabric "core". Slightly better/more durable types with similar construction were the Ashaway Vantage and Vantage II strings...

Ranking Head Master racquets by feel and flex

We did end up tubing some of the new frames being strung for the first time. Sad...these were not cheap rackets. Had to watch for splitting in the corner grommets on the very first stringing; but even the barrels on the straight grommets would shatter over time.

That surprises me that the Rawlings could be that late...I played the Rawlings TieBreaker for a minute...the only Rawlings frame we carried. The shop opened in '73 and I don't recall a wood Rawlings model at all. Maybe it wasn't a South Carolina thing! We sure carried LOTS of others! Even...

Ranking Head Master racquets by feel and flex

LOTS of rose/pink and teal strings in those days(white also, until folks found out how bad they were!!) I played the Elektra Master for about a year...not a bad stick. Original slick gray/white grip was horrible and the grommets would often split on the first stringing. White "plastics"...

Also, the original grip material would offer a little insight as to quality. Wouldn't surprise me if the Wilson had a vinyl/naugahide-ish grip and the Rawlings possibly a wide leather wrap(could also have been vinyl...not sure).

    Wilson Sport comparison

Honestly, I don't want to damp your enthusiasm for the hitting experience; but I wouldn't expect too much from either of these. I'd imagine the Rawlings will be a better hitter as it has some fiber reinforcement in the hoop and a legit flake along the shaft. The channel on the outer hoop is in...
