    coping with losing

Oh my... Gotta overcome your negative mind. That's first and foremost. Read the "Inner Game of Tennis"...it'll get your mind right. I used to be like you....but NO MORE! 5-1 this year in 3.5 and 1-1 in 4.0...lost all matches in USTA League last year because of the losing...

    Arrrrrgh! We got worked over!

*Edited* Whoops, sorry...was reading it wrong. Thought you were talking about your partner. Anyway, mental stability is a must especially when you jump from 3.0 to 3.5. Many at the 3.5 level have figured out ways to win and will do "almost" anything to win or get under someone's skin. Keep...

So when did you 4.0's decide it was time to ditch 3.5?

Last year I had a terrible 3.5 (singles) year a terrible 4.0 doubles year (then read the book, "The Inner Game of Tennis") and I'm 5-1 this year with one of my wins on our USTA leagues 4.0 team (3rd doubles). I haven't lost a set this year (except for the guy who beat me in the 3.5's). So, I'm...

Tennis quips I never want to hear again...

I will sometimes say (when playing a recreational match), "In a USTA Match, I'd call that out!" or "In a real match, I'd call that out!" That sometimes gets them goin...lol. I know, I'm bad.

Opponents Refuse Change Over Break - Is It A Mindgame?

Let me say this...I'm a very chatty person, but when I'm on the court playing a USTA League Match, I'm all work and no play (or chat). I hate to break my concentration and could care less about my opponent sitting, standing, puking, smoking, talking...whatever. All I care about is getting to...

"Funny" story of league play at a public park

So sorry to hear this. I'm male and 33 and had a similar incident. These kids (probably 10 to 12) were yelling "miss it!" or "you suck!" at particular moments during match play at park courts. So, I asked the kid to stop, but he continued. So, I asked my opponent if we could stop playing...

    First Match !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a bit of advice: DON'T Think too much out there! Have fun with it and let your mind be free from its own advice. Just allow yourself to play without thinking. It is easier said than done. Something I do when I get nervous, focus on an inanimate object and focus on it until you lose...

Has there been a better tennis book since "Winning Ugly" ?

Very interesting topic of discussion, and the answer to your question is "The Inner Game of Tennis". It is by far the best book I've ever read. It has helped me become the tennis player I knew I could become. I've had good mechanics for a while, but my mental stability on the court was...

    Strong 3.5 beat a fairly weak 4.5

Well, thanks for the responses! It is interesting. Just a note to everyone...I'm pretty well versed in ratings, abilities, things that we should be able to do and not. I'm not oblivious to this stuff. So, I'm not a rookie coming on here stating things that don't make sense or trying to get...

    Strong 3.5 beat a fairly weak 4.5

Not real sure how to react to the replies. I'm happy to have won, but I'm not real sure that I'm a sandbagger at the 3.5 level. I'm probably on the upper end of the 3.5 level and have pretty good results, but I don't win every match in the USTA 3.5's. I lost every match in the 3.5 Districts...

    Strong 3.5 beat a fairly weak 4.5

Hello, I played 4 sets tonight and one 10 point tie breaker (I'm the 3.5 player). First I played a comptuer rated 3.0 one set (warmup) and won 6-0 with absolutely no problems. He got 5 points the entire time (all on my mistakes). Then played a set with a computer rated 3.5 player and won 6-2...

0 to 5.5 in 5 years starting at age 43?

To suresh, My apologies good sir! Here's me eating my words! Thanks to whoever posted the article...it is appreciated and intriguing!

0 to 5.5 in 5 years starting at age 43?

Hmmm, good point. I know I've been mostly negative within in this thread. I'm normally not this way, but I just can't quit thinking about how ludacrous even the thought of someone starting tennis at 43 and progressing to a 5.5 in 5 years, with one of the years sat out due to injury. Then...

0 to 5.5 in 5 years starting at age 43?

Absolutely no way! If you're basing your logic on the examples you just posted, then you're absolutely on crack (not to be taken as an insult...please). Your 42 year old that had laser precision on serves has probably played all of his life and the 63 year old was, as you mentioned, A FORMER...

0 to 5.5 in 5 years starting at age 43?

There...that wasn't so difficult. And, thank you. I appreciate it (I think we all do). Now, can you produce the article? That is the last piece of the pie (for me). I'd love to read it for inspiration! I hope you understand that the reasons why you (the OP) got these types of responses...

0 to 5.5 in 5 years starting at age 43?

What?! Now you suddenly don't have the article and can't remember the name? BS dude. I don't believe one instance of this. I think you're now trying to recover from your crazy statement. You say you can't post his name because you don't want it going around the forums and stuff, yet...

0 to 5.5 in 5 years starting at age 43?

To the OP...first I don't believe you read this article (because) you would have (without hesitation) posted this guys name. And, the fact that you've not responded to any posts tells me that you're trying to get a rise out of the community. I will, however, eat my words if you can produce the...

    NTRP 3.49 vs 3.0 = 6-0,6-0

I'm not sure I'd agree with the 3.5 and and the 3.99 ending at 0 and 0. I think that a strong 3.5 player can get a game or two from the 3.99 player. However, I think a 3.0 would get double bagled from a 3.49 player... I'm a strong 3.5 player (playing on both 4.0 and 3.5 teams) and have been...

    Your game in 2010!

Good topic! I'm playing some of my best tennis right now, but what I'd really like to improve on is my volleying and my kick serve out wide. I've sort of conquered the overhitting thing, and am becoming much more consistent as a result. I do sometimes have problems with overheads (believe it...

    Need help cooling my nerves

Read the book "The Inner Game of Tennis". This book will change you and your game dramatically. You'll very quickly realize that it's your mind that you have to overcome, not your talent. Read the book...I guarantee you'll play better--immediately. I used to lose relatively consistently...

"The Inner Game of Tennis" is my cure!

That's excellent! I've also begun to experience the "slowing" down of play...more aware of the environment and my opponents shots and tactics (including strengths and weaknesses). That's very interesting and very TRUE!

"The Inner Game of Tennis" is my cure!

I applied the techniques immediately. But, during match play, I focused on the pattern the ball was making (with the seams), and on the serve I focused and visualized the flight path of the ball I wanted to serve. That actually helped a great deal! But, I didn't really succeed with my mind...

"The Inner Game of Tennis" is my cure!

Agreed. I've always preached to myself about staying relaxed...and of course it never really worked (maybe in a couple of short instances). But, after reading the book, it helps you to figure out ways to make it work on a consistent basis.
