What questions do I ask new customers?

    1. Where was your racquet strung (to figure out if a crank, constant tension or drop weight was used). 2. What tension? 3. If you could wave a magic wand to change your racquet what would you want (more comfort, more or less power, more spin, more or less control, better string durability)...

    NEOS 1000/Wise vs Bairdo/Etc.?

The only problem I see is a case of techno-lust. Your current setup has generated zero complaints, so.....?

    PS97 v. 11.5 and v. 12

What is the difference between the matte black PS 97 (v.11.5) and the black and white PS 97 (v.12)? Both frames include countervail.

    Gut/Poly set up

I play the original RF97 with Klip Tour 17 (1.25 mm) mains at 50 and Signum Tornado 1.17mm crosses at 45 (Prince NEOS with Weiss Electronic Tension Head). Very durable and firm but lively, with great feel. When it starts to feel a little sloppy, I put the stick in the stringer, cut out the...

Yonex: 3 pounds less in the crosses - still true?

For years, I have dutifully strung Yonex racquets 3 pounds less in the crosses, but when I recently looked for a statement from Yonex on the subject, I came up empty. So.... is it still Yonex instruction to string the crosses 3 pounds less than the mains on their "isometric" racquets and, if...

Ytex string: let the good times roll!!!!!

I have tried the ProTour blue (1.20 mm) for mains with Hightec 1.10 mm crosses and I like it. Similar to Signum Tornado, but perhaps a little more pop. Good feel and control. I am now in a long term test to see about tension maintenance and the infatuation factor (something new helps you...

When was the Volkl C10 Pro (98) First Made?

I am curious about the history of this classic, one of the few that is still made to its original specs.

What to cross with Pacific Classic Gut in a C10 Pro?

When I do a gut hybrid, I like inexpensive Gosen, usually one gauge lower than the gut. This string is very gentle to the gut and brings the price of the string job down a lot. Tension is a personal preference, so I don't know what to tell you there. On my C10s, one pound up or down seems to...

Gut gauges - Klip 18 and Pacific 17

I just noticed that Pacific Tournament Pro Classic Gut 17 gauge is the same size (1.20mm) as Klip Legend 18 (1.20 mm). Klip Legend 17 is 1.25 mm. Just one more reason to ignore gauges and look for the string diameter.

    Crisp, Arm-Friendly, Spinny Poly?

Tornado is arm friendly and lively. Polyfibre Viper is more lively and more crisp, but the "crisp" part could irritate some arms.

Suggest a low power, round, soft copoly with feel

Everyone seems to find the orange string a little more crisp than the pearl color. They are not identical.

For those with a Wise Tensioner

My Wise Tension head has had a few issues since I bought it in 2005. Herb worked with me and sent me replacement parts at no charge. He does not have the charm of Johnny Carson or George Clooney, but who does? He was sincerely interested in getting me back on line. I had no issues with...

Wise 2086 Pro tension head problem

I have had my Wise since late 2005 (on a NEOS). I have strung about 600-700 racquets in that time. My first problem was in 2009 when a magnet that is glued to the head fell off. When this magnet gets close to a magnet sensor at each end of the tension head run, it stops the motor. Herb...

Suggest a low power, round, soft copoly with feel

I thought SPPP was a very comfortable, lower powered poly. The Pro Line II was much more crisp and very low powered (red and black are the same string in different colors). In fact, I hated it. My personal favorite these days is Signum Tornado - soft, powerful, spiniful (?) and holds tension...

Poly's with the best tension maintenance?

PVaudio - Pro Line II vs. SPPP. I stand by the report of my experience. PL2 felt like Bakelite plastic to me and was so harsh I could not stand it, even at low tension. I have found SPPP comfortable even at "normal" tensions (eg. 58 #). I hybrid both with OG 18 gauge. I cannot explain your...

Poly's with the best tension maintenance?

bfactor - SPPP is much softer and more powerful than Pro Line II. If you try SPPP and already play Pro Line II, add at least 3 pounds to the tension or it will probably seem mushy to you.

Poly's with the best tension maintenance?

SPPPP has been a good tension holder for me and now Tornado seems to be just as good, but I am still a little early in my Tornado experience to be certain.

Official TW December 2010 blind string playtest

Bud: I don't blame you for being confused by my statement. I was a gut guy for years, but so many people were raving about Poly that I thought I would take another look. When I first tried poly years before, it was ugly and stiff, but not as ugly and stiff as Kevlar. Some Co-polies solved...

Official TW December 2010 blind string playtest

December 2010 String Test * I strung a full set of the test string at 56# (no hybrid)(NEOS 1000 with Wise Tension Head at constant pull setting). Very easy and unremarkable to string. * My string set up for a long time was Signum Pure Pro Poly Plasma 1.18 mm mains with Gosen OG Sheep 18 gauge...

Signum Pro Tornado 1.17 and 1.23

I get that different gauges play differently, but I did not expect a thinner string to be more stiff than its thicker sibling. I suspect differences between my two Prestige Pros is confounding my experience. I will string the reverse setups and see what happens (ie - 1.23 in the one I tested...

Signum Pro Tornado 1.17 and 1.23

How about the original question? I posted a rave about Tornado 1.23 and eagerly awaited my Tornado 1.17, which went into a different YT Pro Prestige as soon as the string arrived. To my shock horror and disappointment, it was like a completely different string - less power and less comfort -...

    Spraying silicone on your strings...

I cannot imagine putting enough silicone on the ball to affect its bounce. A more efficient way to apply silicone is with those shoe shine sponges. Not the ones with color -- the ones that just add shine. I use these to lubricate natural gut during stringing. I have no opinion on whether...

Hybrid Stringing = Dangerous Tension Imbalance?

My personal favorite response is Lambsscroll's. I would add that many of the hybrid string sets are sold by racquet companies (e.g. Wilson, Babolat)

Hybrid Stringing = Dangerous Tension Imbalance?

Even when a poly main is originally strung at the same tension as a synthetic gut, multi or natural gut cross string, the poly mains are going to lose tension faster than the crosses, so that a tension imbalance is likely to distort the shape of the racquet head. Playing the stick in this...

Signum Tornado/Sensation Hybrid is the BOMB!

I am exploring many of the new offerings in the string world and found an exceptional combination in Tornado (1.23 mm) and Sensation (1.25 mm) in a Prestige Pro at 54#. I have a few grams of lead on the PP, b/c is was so head light (still 8 pts HL with 6g, divided between 3 and 9). The strings...

The Head Youtek Prestige Pro Appreciation Thread - join now please :)

I bought a YPP for an extended demo and find a lot to like, even though I miss the "plow through" power of my higher SW sticks, such as my main stick -- Aero Pure Storm. I have added some lead at 3/9 and will hit again. I just love the bite for spin and the low swingweight has translated into...
