    Programming Enthusiasts of TT

Programming is a valuable tool in the toolbox of scientists, engineers, and musicians. But I've never seen it as an end in itself. It's a tool to accomplish other valuable ends.

Who do you consider to be the GOAT amongst classical music composers?

The GOAT idea makes more sense in sports than in the arts and sciences. Sports are competitions - one person is competing with others at every stage. So while art and science can be framed as competitions, this is not an inherent property of the tasks. One can be a great scientist without...

Seeking advice on Telegram for reaching Farsi speakers in Iran and Afghanistan

Good questions. Thanks for asking. My video ministry, Rednecks for Jesus, began in 2016 and has made a lot more videos intended for a US audience than for Farsi speakers. We only began the Farsi project in July. Our efforts in English have averaged over 80,000 monthly views since 2020. See...

Seeking advice on Telegram for reaching Farsi speakers in Iran and Afghanistan

Good point, but our work around is easy. It's a simple matter to maintain a dedicated Android phone (< $100) that only manages the TikTok account or a small number of "high risk" social media accounts. The only data they can get is the stuff on the device you access TikTok with.

Seeking advice on Telegram for reaching Farsi speakers in Iran and Afghanistan

Thank you for the well considered reply. I have started and managed several Christian outreaches on TikTok that have followed the same pattern: fast early growth and strong viewership. But somewhere between the 2 and 4 month mark, viewership crashes to single digits. A number of other...

Seeking advice on Telegram for reaching Farsi speakers in Iran and Afghanistan

I thought the good people here could advise me on this matter. If you're willing, I'd like your advice on a social media question I am facing. For the past few months I've been spending 10 hours a week editing and distributing evangelical videos in Farsi. My efforts have doubled the reach of...

    2022 Goals

Great thread. Sorry, I'm so late to the party. Joint pain has me stepping away from tennis. But I'm down to 192 lbs and working hard to maintain that. In 2021, I grew my video views to 1.6 million, rode my bike 1200 miles (down from 2k), and went fishing 80 times, entertaining guests over 50...

    Recording Practice Matches.

Zoom on the GoPro is limited. I have one, and getting it in the right spot is tough. I've used a camcorder on a tripod, but the places I play have good places outside the fence to get the right field of view. Overheating is not a problem with the GoPro10, but to record the whole thing, you'll...

I married my brick house. Still partying every night for as long as we both shall live.

    When would you live?

Of course. I'm working toward more good and less evil. But I would hope I'd do the same in any generation.

Is it fun being a pusher?

A few years back, I went through a streak of trying low percentage shots. It never worked. If they go in, it's the stuff the opponents like. My best chance is to get them frustrated, and the high percentage junky balls will do that often enough to win once in a while. But each opponent has...

Is it fun being a pusher?

I usually lose. I do test their endurance to see if they can maintain the wheels. But if their strokes are better than mine and their wheels as good or better, they are going to beat me most of the time. I can sometimes beat younger guys with uneven keels who get frustrated and cannot maintain...

Is it fun being a pusher?

Your approach to pushing seems a lot different than mine. Thanks for the chance to clarify. Nothing I do requires "precise shot placement." I'm not aiming for corners or lines when I try and move players left to right. I'm directing the ball to the two outer thirds of the court (left and...

Is it fun being a pusher?

Pushing isn't just a button you flip. It's a complex combination of decision and shot making to execute those decisions. In my pushing, I seldom try and hit winners, but I am targeting areas of the court on each shot focused on some priority of goals: moving opponent side to side, moving...

Will adult tournaments ever make a comeback?

No doubt it is more appealing to the organizers, but I think after some experience, a lot of the players will get tired of the typical driving required given the experience waiting at the end of the long drive through ATL traffic. There are also frequent requirements to visit neighborhoods many...

Will adult tournaments ever make a comeback?

I'm disappointed to see UTR pushing more flex leagues instead of tournaments in greater ATL. I prefer knowing when I sign up where I'm driving and tourneys can me done at reasonable locations not too far from me. The emphasis on flex leagues seems to be matching levels rather than keeping the...

Is it fun being a pusher?

I don't recall any miserable wins. When I see early in a match that things are miserable for my opponent, I try and be as friendly and encouraging as I can through the process. Sometimes that means putting them out of their misery quickly. Sometimes that means taking it easy and allowing for a...

Is it fun being a pusher?

I don't play tennis, I play an opponent. Tennis just defines the rules. Those who let it define the methods also are disadvantaging themselves with extra constraints.

Is it fun being a pusher?

More fun than losing. Usually I resort to pushing when the opponent is comparable in skill or better than I am. In those cases, winning is more fun.

Is it fun being a pusher?

Winning is fun, and some times pushing is the path to winning given the strengths and weaknesses of my opponent and I.

    Unsolicited Advice

Doubles partners gotta communicate. Doing it in a way that does not irritate the partner is a tricky art and balance. I've been bad enough at it some times, so I'm slow to judge partners who are bad at it. It silence or under-communicating better than over-communicating? I doubt it. A good...

Why I'm so bad at the Swinging Volley

One could say that about any shot. But I've played rec tennis, which is what we're talking about here. For most adults in rec tennis, swinging volleys are low percentage. Yes, some tiny percentage of players might be good at it. Most just aren't. It's a tough shot to master, and few adults...

Why I'm so bad at the Swinging Volley

I stand by the point. Placement trumps speed. Why take the risk for a winner if caught in NML? Place the ball well, stay in the point, mabe win it, and decide to advance to the net or retreat to the baseline. No need for low percentage stuff. But you still have time on your side with good placement.

Why I'm so bad at the Swinging Volley

Placement trumps speed at the net. Being at the net already took away lots of time. Put the ball where they can't get to it. And even if they get to it, the whole court is open for the next shot.

    The Drop Shot

It's a valuable tool in the box. I'll almost always hit a couple early to test the response. It will ferret out certain mobility weaknesses quickly. But some peeps spot it well and close and can punish even good executions.
