    Mixed Gender Play

I think both men and female benefit. I think mixed doubles, in general helps your game because you see a wide variety of serves, spins, and pace. Usually the males will hit a harder ball while the females are a bit more consistent. I think it's good practice.

do you play Singles and Doubles

I enjoy the social aspects of doubles, especially mixed doubles. But for pure competition, I prefer singles.

Put in doubles, but have preference for singles

Yeah, I can understand when captains are skeptical when players announce their superiority in singles only to be trounced when they actually play. You propose a pretty fair system where everyone can get a chance. I'm sure you still get the random player complaining about how his matchup was...

Put in doubles, but have preference for singles

Thanks for all the advice. Yes, I do forget that captains have a lot to deal with other than organizing practices and setting lineups. I should be more communicative, but in general, I'm a pretty laid back guy and generally won't say anything unless really pushed. Anyway, I think I'll...

This 'better to hit long' thing is overrated!

What Bud said, unless your long misses are by 4 feet or more long. Then you have a serious problem with going for too much on your shots.

    In your opinion ...

3.5 players generally across the board suffer from a lack of consistency, poor shot selection and poor placement on serves.

Put in doubles, but have preference for singles

Thanks for the diplomatic solutions. I guess I never looked at it from the captain's perspective. Also, I think we are going to be a playoff threat this year, so I doubt the "working me in at singles" line will work but maybe if we start pulling ahead a bit in the standings i'll lobby for...

    The J011yRoger Bet Reloaded.

Wow is it bad that I just spent the last hour or so at work reading up on this thread and some older Jolly thread's to get caught up on his "legend." Anyway, this is good entertainment. I do hope he wins the bet.

What do you do with the wind?

Footwork is key. Keep making those small adjustment steps to help you stay in balance. As for serving, really focus on keeping the toss consistent. Helps if your toss isn't too high.

Would you rather get a team win or an individual win?

This is a tough question, but I'd rather win on my own if there are no playoff implications. If the team is already in the playoffs however, I'll be more than happy to be the sacrificial lamb if it means we move forward as a team.

    Arrrrrgh! We got worked over!

This singing guy sounds fun. For me personally, I think it would have loosened me up a bit actually rather than annoyed me. It's always fun to see someone out there having a good time as opposed to screaming out in anguish after every missed ball.

Put in doubles, but have preference for singles

Quick background first: I'm an NTRP rated 4.0 player playing on both 4.0 and 4.5 men's teams. I am probably the best all around player on the 4.0 team since at practice I routinely beat everyone else in both singles and doubles, no matter who I have as my partner. I've played a few 4.5...

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

I had no problem with Slazenger 07's post either. He's basically telling it like it is, and I don't think he was condescending or anything in his tone. With that said, if anyone cares, went down 6-1, 4-6 and 10-5 in that stupid coman tiebreak last night in another 4.5 league match. I...

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

thanks for telling me twice. specifically, i think if i can get some more consistency on my wide-slice serve to the deuce side, it'll earn me some more points. currently, i probably only get about 1/5 of these serves in, which is quite terrible. i have a good flat serve down the T and am...

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

Sounds like you had a good learning experience just like I did. It's great that your opponent gave you some tips afterwards though. I'm sure you, like I, will learn a lot from the loss and be a better player for the next match.

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

Great tips. Thanks for taking the time to write that. Looks like I have a lot of work to do this summer, but that's what makes tennis so fun. There is always someone around who can kick my ass and give me motivation to improve. You're spot on about shot selection. I am definitely too...

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

good point. i have the ability to finish points i think, but my mentality while playing needs to change. i'm usually very content just rolling the ball back deep and waiting for errors. i need to work on taking more high percentage chances to close out points, instead of just hitting another...

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

Thanks to all for your helpful comments and insights. Thinking back on the match, I do now realize certain things I could have done to make it more competitive. My opponent himself pointed out that had I gone for greater angles on my groundstrokes (not necessarily more pace), it would have...

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

Yeah, I definitely don't expect a 10 year 4.5 vet to lose to me. I also know I can't beat that guy, but I do know I had many chances to make it more competitive, i.e, a 6-3, 6-3 loss or something. I do like baseline bashing and playing long points, but I would like the points to come easier...

    moving up from 4.0-4.5

I'd consider myself a pretty solid 4.0. I can put up a good fight against most lower end 4.5 players, but struggle to take sets, usually either barely taking the set 7-6 or 7-5, or losing 6-3. Playing up in a 4.5 league for the first time this year and got creamed 6-2, 6-0 in singles by a...

why does the OP care if he's ugly? why can't people just enjoy tennis and stop worrying about what NTRP level other people claim they are at?

    Playing up 2 levels

He made a simple mistake. He's never played USTA before and after reading the guidelines put himself down as a 3.5. I know better though since I'm rated a 4.0 and he can beat me pretty handily in doubles with a comparable partner, and I edge him slightly in singles. Thus, its pretty clear he...

    Playing up 2 levels

Point taken. I suppose he could still play 4.0. Still, whats the real point of the ban? No one is really being harmed since he would just be playing at his normal level anyway.
