Are you joking? Having Break Points and converting them is critical to winning tennis match (even in tiebreaks you need breaks).
Another issue is consistency, so critical to results of tennis matches. Both players can have similar percentage stats on serve but what matters is consistent...
I think Murray declined in comparison to his "peak" level of 2012-2013 when he won his GS titles and he is now where he was 2010-early 2012 when he was loosing to Novak and Roger in GS. Both Novak and especially Roger play better then when Murray beat them in his "peak" period, so it is not so...
I think he should have a different coach for a start. Check my comments re Mauresmo in the past (so I am not jumping on the bandwagon because of the today's loss) but why total head-case in her own career who lost numerous matches she should have won is the right coach for Andy?
Come on...
Well, Djoko was broken few times in his SF by Gasquet today and facing few close games as well, so surely Roger with his Wimby record and form this year would be even tougher opponent?
Tennis is not about averages so much as about consistency. Murray had one bad game in each set and it cost...
I voted the same (disclosure: after seeing Fed winning against Murray) on assumption he serves as well as today, otherwise I would have gone with Djoko in 5 sets.
I am amazed though that people go with Fed in five sets. Anything going over 3 hrs surely makes Djoko 90% favourite?
People rave...
I voted for Murray in 5 sets.
Is 3 wins out of 8 GS finals (never mind 2 out of 8 ) the worst conversion rate in tennis?
Obviously I ignore players who were in but never won GS final or finals (their rate is 0%)
What personal problems?
Having a child is a problem for you?
It would be for me, but for most people it is a joy (as I am sure it is for Novak).
Multi Slam season?
Yes he should ask Roger and Rafa how to do it consistently both on and off the court :-)
Correction:
Obviously asking Rafa...
Your logical reasoning skills are just amazing.
So Cilic defeated tired Nishi in the final (who defeated your beloved Novak in SF), old and tired Fed in the SF and it follows that Sampras etc.?
Yes, Fed returning is not as good as 5-6 years ago, so Cilic win proves nothing.
Kraicek...
You can not persuade Novak fan boy whatever arguments you use.
He (and others) criticised Roger for his "performance" against Cilic but now Cilic showed that Nishi has got some serious issues with his game.
Where does it leave Novak in this context?
Well looking even worse than after...
You might be wrong about the last sentence :-)
I actually did a poll after Wimby and for some reasons (mostly because I thought Fed is done, Murray still not back and Nadal probably done and no other guys having real chance at GSs) I thought that Djoko might make 11 plus and even hold all 4...
Subtraction is definitely more basic than fractions in maths, so you are wrong here.
I know Novak resume, but reality is that the most important criteria is number of GSs won with other achievements less relevant although still important.
I like Novak, but he is just not in the same class...
"Easily see?": is there any example of a player winning more on average at the end of their career then at peak?
Any names?
It is possible with all stars aligning for Djoko:
1) Nadal never recovering, so Novak wins RG
2) Murray never getting to his level of 2012/13
3) guys you prised...
What about basic math?
Murray: 2GS, Djoko: 7GS, Nadal: 14GS, Fed: 17GS, so:
Djoko- Murray=5
Nadal-Djoko=7
Fed-Djoko=10
10>7>5
Conclusion: Djoko closer to Murray then to Nadal, never mind Federer.
It might change, but at the moment, that is the fact.
So on the basis of being impressed with Nishi here, you decided that he will win 6-9 GSs?
He is 24 now, so maybe he has 3-4 years at top level and that assuming he stays healthy, which is not exactly given with his record.
So he would have to win 2 out of 3 GS (I do not see him ever...
I never saw Nishi as a GS champion to be honest with his physical issues and relative lack of power on consistent basis to go through stronger guys.
So I agree with 0-2/3 GS with a lot dependent on his final against Cilic.
If he wins against big hitter like Cilic, than 2-3 are possible if...
Adding it purely for completeness as some of the info is not current.
This year SKY streams US Open via NOWtv which offers daily and weekly passes.
http://www.nowtv.com/sports
Eurosport player has some coverage of daily session matches but NOT evening matches and for SF and final there is no...
Maybe he can not put this together on consistent basis because of his physical conditioning?
He strikes me as someone similar to Nalbandian: great technique but chubby i.e. carrying, at least, stone or more of extra weight.
At top level this is critical and does not help your mental state...
I guess it is based on the idea that far from peak Federer had very close matches in 2 GSs that year against GOD level (i.e. never seen since) Novak winning at FO and having 2 match points in USO.
So your actual numbers do nothing to disprove someone's opinion that peak Fed was better than...
I agree with first part but less sure about reporters comments in the second.
What do we expect sportsmen (and women) to say to the media?
Do we want them to provide some honest answers about their feelings and emotions and assessment of the match from their perspective or usual banal, PR...
I voted no, but what about being a bit realistic about players careers? :-)
I mean, you would have to win at 17 (let say) and then at 36 without failure to make it happen?
Just the very long time frame makes it improbable because it would mean that there were clay and HC GOATS playing...
While it was very interesting post in general, I am nut sure how the facts you quote are relevant to tennis?
Tennis is neither sprint nor marathon but more like successions of short sprints with hundreds of repeats per match.
Because of the way the best of 5 sets matches work even if your top...
The problem with speeding up courts is that it might not lead to S/V players emerging but to servebots like Raonic, Janowicz and Kyrgios dominating.
Better training and physios allow really tall players to move and be flexible enough to compete, which would not be the case 10-15 years ago...
Because it is logical (any stats proving otherwise?) that players will have fans in their own country first and only then globally.
So it is nearly certain that since Spain has 47 mln people and Switzerland only 8 mln that Federer has more FB fans globally than Nadal assuming that only certain...
All this is true, but if we take a slightly wider view as to popularity and commercial prospects for tennis after Fed, Nadal, Djoko and Murray retire than we have a problem at least till some new greats appear on the scene.
If you think about it, if Murray (or player of Murray quality) was...
Berdych situation is not like Murray's before Lendl became a coach. Murray was consistent SF and multiple times GS finalist before Lendl took over and his main issue was mental in tight matches against top 3 guys.
Berdych lacks mobility and shot making variety to win GS against likes of Djoko...
Hm? what about Yakuza gangsters and corruption in Japanese politics?
I am not saying it is not an issue in other countries or even more so...
Still Nishikori seams like a nice chap.
