    Browning 6.95 Mid (braided fibres)

So many companies had their hands in all kinds of products. While FN is best known for armaments, the also produced some pretty well engineered automobiles early in the 20th century. They also made motorcycles into the 1960's. While Yamaha is best known for motorcycles, musical instruments...

    Complete Catalog of Yamaha Releases?

I actually like playing with it once in a while. Very unforgiving due to the small head but if you have old school flatter strokes and you hit it in the sweet spot it is really a nice feel. Kind of a hefty swing weight, but keep in mind I played with it when I was 14. These days as you know...

    Obscure/unpopular frames used by pros

How about Francoise Durr playing with the old aluminum Head Standard? Not the obvious choice of frame for a Hall of Fame inductee, but I guess it fit her shall we say, "unique technique".

    Complete Catalog of Yamaha Releases?

The YFG70 was legendary for its whistling sound when you swung fast. I had my YFG50's out last month and I could make them whistle too. I kid you not a couple people asked me if it was a squash racquet since the head was so small.

    Snauwaert Vitas Gerulaitis Autograph

Yes, and a vsbabolat mentioned they came in all sorts of different weights. I was one of those who thought the Gottfried was too light but looking back that may have been a function of me being all hot and bothered about getting matched frames without paying attention to the actual playing...

    Holiday Fun with Classic Racquets

One thing I liked about Snauwaert wood frames like the Gottfried back in the day was that they marked the actual weight and balance point of the particular frame on every one. Thus, you could go through the frames on the rack and hopefully find two or three that were if not identical at least...

    Snauwaert Vitas Gerulaitis Autograph

My junior doubles partner was a sponsored Snauweart player and used these. I can't comment on the string pattern but did these come in a slightly different cosmetic with a lighter blue body? I briefly played with the Gottfried Autograph in the day and I have seen various subtle cosmetic...

    Holiday Fun with Classic Racquets

So interesting that there can be such a huge difference in static weights among frames that should be more standard. As we know there were the L, M, and sometimes even H designations on old racquets but my Superform is labeled an L so to have a 30 plus gram difference with the one @gold325 has...

    Yamaha Alpha Series

I used the YFG50 for a year around the 1979 timeframe. Still have a couple that are fun to take out once in while. The only other pro I can think of who used a Yamaha was Bob Lutz. A great player especially in doubles with Stan Smith, but not the most high profile name.

    Sticky Volkls

Thanks Steve! If it is good enough for sea birds in an oil spill it should work fine on the frames.

    Sticky Volkls

While organizing my 48 year accumulation of racquets and pulling some out for fun hits, I came across a pair of Volkl Catapult 6's that my subconscious conveniently forgot that I used for a time. I want to take them out and see if I can figure out what possessed me to think they would suit my...

    Holiday Fun with Classic Racquets

I think that playing with these small head/small sweet spot frames on occasion is very beneficial. It forces you to really focus on your mechanics as long as the racquet doesn't force you to change your strokes to compensate. For example, a racquet that will never leave my closet is the...

    Holiday Fun with Classic Racquets

As I have previously mentioned in other threads, I have at least one example of every racquet (with two exceptions, the Ashe Comp 1 and the Snauwaert Gottfried Autograph) that I have used as my primary racquet since I started playing in 1975. As an end of the year giggle, I grabbed a bag of...

Best items you found at thrift stores (Goodwill)?

I usually have the opposite problem where grips are too small. I have been playing with a 4-5/8 for most of the 47 years I have been playing tennis (used a 4-1/2 until I was in high school). When I buy new racquets my pro shop has to special order the grip size for me since all they seem to...

    Old Fischer racquets experts please

A Fischer Superform (black, Stan Smith style) is one of the very few classic frames I own that neither me or my Dad never actually used back in the day. I always thought they were cool since they were so different looking. I got mine years ago with strung with who knows what at an...

Like most of the classic frames I own or "want", the Trabert C-6 is just a childhood nostalgia thing. One of my high school teachers who I would practice with had one, as well as a car with a five speed transmission, both of which were very exciting things to see in the lovely but smaller town...

Wow that is a heck of a pair of classics. The Cannon and the Trabert C6 have always been on my "fantasy list" of cheap finds.

Yamaha YFG50 - stringing instructions please

I actually took out one of my old YFG50's a couple weeks ago and it didn't whistle (but I did get a lot of "squash racquet" jokes from my playing group). However, the YFG70 definitely had a whistle which I distinctly recall since the best men's player in my home state when I was a junior used...

AMF Head Professional "Red Head" -- still great after all these years

The Head aluminum frames of the early to mid 70's were great. My first "serious" racquet was the Head Master in about 1975. Won my first tournaments using it. I still have two of them. My Dad concurrently bought the Head Pro and as I got better I "borrowed" his for a bit (still have one of...

Best items you found at thrift stores (Goodwill)?

I made my monthly visit to the Goodwill next to my barber, and they had...nothing...zip...zilch...nada. That is the first time since I joined this thread that they had absolutely nothing. Even if there is nothing interesting you can usually count on at least seeing a cheapo Wal-Mart racquet...

Best items you found at thrift stores (Goodwill)?

Only one racquet at Goodwill during my monthly visit. It was an aluminum Head Edge, complete with that oh so early 80's white head cover with the red, orange and yellow stripes. This thing was very original, with what appeared to be the factory leather grip and the decals on the plastic throat...

What was your worst (vintage) racket?

I certainly was fooled by the Snauwaert Brian Gottfried Autograph. I was seduced by the beautiful guitarlike woodwork, Fairway grip and snazzy suede head cover. It had no plow through and felt unstable in my 15 year old hand. Went from that straight to the aluminum Prince Pro followed by the...

    Classic String Talk

There were a number of strings using metal wires. The one I used for a period of time was called Hi-Wire but that was in the 80's so it may not be the one you are thinking of.

    Prince CTS-series

What was the first CTS frame to be introduced? Was it the Thunderstick? This was all in the era of my incredibly ill-advised switch from the POG to first gen Wilson Profile that set my game back many years. I always figured that switching to the Thunderstick may have been much less of a...

I started playing with the POG not long after it was introduced, and I always strung them with 15L gauge strings at about 76 pounds. It is interesting that you can play with the frame at 58. I still have a POG or two in the closet so I may try stringing it lower and see how it plays. I think...

    The mysterious Head Taiwan Frames

I am pretty sure that I know the answer to this one, but back in the late 70's a number of the better players in my hometown were using what they referred to as the "Taiwan Pro". I assume it was a knockoff of the Head Professional (aluminum "Red Head") and not an actual Head produced frame...
