Puerta - Banned For 8 Years

Yeah right, this isn't the 70s when the players actually were concerned for the state of the game. No cause is big enough for todays' players to sacrifice their ranking/bank account for another. I'm sure they could care less about Puerta.

Puerta is Being Crucified As A Scapegoat

Fee: Karatantcheva told a Bulgarian news agency she was not informed of the test result and denied appearing before the panel. "I am shocked,'' Karatantcheva told the agency. "I have not appeared before judges of the international federation.'' But remember what Puerta said after "L'equipe"...

Fed to win just 1 slam in 2006!

Mr. Topspin: "As well as the fact that RG and Wimbledon are closer in the schedule than in years gone by." Wimbledon has always started exactly 2 weeks after the French ended(at least in the Open era) So Borg didn't have any more time to prepare than Fed,Nadal, etc. And he never played a...

Pros who changed their service strategy

Swan Song, he played the best tennis of his career, results-wise with this racquet. So what if his % was higher in '89 or '92, he was not a better player then compared to '96/'97. I don't agree that his volleys or groundstrokes weren't as fluid in '97, regardless. Bottomline, he was winning...

Pros who changed their service strategy

Perhaps, but do you really think it negatively affected his results? He was #2 in '96 & #3 in '97 using this racquet.

Pros who changed their service strategy

I don't think Agassi's 2nd serve is a liability. He gets good kick on it & its not like anyone's teeing off on it. A very underated part of his game. As far as Chang goes, when he made that switch(to a longer racquet) he had the best year of his career(ending '96 at #2) he ended '97 at #3. I...

Puerta - Banned For 8 Years

Jack, I'm not sure that Puerta is just guilty of "being stupid." The explanation he provided sounds like a joke. I know nothing about testing, but I can't imagine a few drops(his wife drank her meds & left the glass empty, right?) mixed with water would be enough for a positive. Plus they only...

Puerta - Banned For 8 Years

The Canas suspension was justified. There is no way a diuretic would be present in a healthy individual except for masking purposes. It is not present in any cold medications. Also his claims were absurd-he said was taking cold medication(but he didn't tell the dude taking the urine samples, who...

Puerta - Banned For 8 Years

In his defense, Puerta claims the etilefrine entered his system when he unknowingly drank from a glass his wife, Sol, had used. Mrs. Puerta testified she has taken etilefrine, which can be purchased in Argentina and Spain over the counter without a prescription, since about the age of 15. She...

The three-man tribunal said the drug apparently came from effortil, a medication Puerta's wife takes for hypertension. "We accept on the balance of probabilities that the player's contamination with effortil was inadvertent," said the ITF tribunal, which met Dec. 6-7. "The amount of...

Spadea's book has dirt on Blake, Roddick, Richard Williams

I doubt Torrey was kidding. That was just a cover for getting shot down. I think it's bad form to dish on Roddick. Those "models" wouldn't have been anywhere near Vince without Roddick around. Looks like Vince thinks Nadal may be peaking early-4 slams?

Spadea's book has dirt on Blake, Roddick, Richard Williams

No one ever hit on you, Fee? These tennis players must be a well-behaved bunch. I agree on Czech women, guernica1. It doesn't seem to apply to the guys though-Lendl, Korda, Stepanek-some really funny looking dudes. A semi-related note on groupies. Attended a summer league many years ago. A...

Spadea's book has dirt on Blake, Roddick, Richard Williams

James Blake — Spadea, who has won seven of 10 meetings with Blake, recalls one clash with his rival in which Blake took time during a changeover to accuse Spadea of resorting to gamesmanship in trying to break his momentum by taking a bathroom break. Spadea, who has scored five straight wins...

    Betting on Tennis?

Tennis used to be a lot harder to predict. The 90s were a time of many more upsets & longshots winning slams(or at least making the semis, etc) Federer being the most dominant player in 20 years certainly makes tennis easier to predict. And Roddick, Hewitt are far more consistent than many...

Who else thought Rafa would finish the year No. 2???

My Chang comment wasn't just for davey. It just seems in all these endless Nadal threads his name comes up in a negative connotation-"Nadal could be the next Chang, etc." I don't think that will happen, but also think there's nothing wrong with being the next Chang. He had a very good career...

    Which movie should I see?

Yeah, I'm not really into big-budget event films, but King Kong looks like the real deal. Peter Jackson may be the new Spielberg(or the Spielberg from the 70s/80s) Though 3hrs seems like a bit much for that type of movie. I think they'll keep the body count down, Kong has to be a somewhat...

Who else thought Rafa would finish the year No. 2???

Just to clarify-I don't think Nadal will be a one slam wonder. It's certainly possible for him to be a one surface wonder, though(as far as the slams go) And if anyone's offering good odds, I don't think he will ever reach a US Open or Wimbledon SF. And I'm not a hater, just a feeling I have.

    Which movie should I see?

That's interesting, PM. I would think the opposite is true for most people-see King Kong on the big screen, rent Syriana. Movies like King Kong are the reason movies changed to 'widescreen' in the 50s, to see something you can't see on TV. And judging from 35's description, Syriana might play...

Jimmy Connors on Monday Night Football

Wish I had seen it(wasn't 'best damn' cancelled?) And it's cool that jocks know who Nastase, Lendl, Borg are. Bet they couldn't pick Safin, Fed, or Hewitt out of a lineup. Connors' legacy goes beyond the tennis world. Peyton Manning, on some espn show, said that his all time favorite quote...

Who else thought Rafa would finish the year No. 2???

This "most titles by a teenager" stat is misleading. Just because Nadal won more titles in a season than Wilander, Borg, Becker doesn't mean his game is as advanced as theirs was at the same age, esp on non-clay surfaces. Look at what Wilander did in '83, he made the finals of the French &...

    The Best of the best.....

I don't think Connors was the 1st top guy not to play doubles(& he actually won a few major titles early in his career with Nastase) Laver, Gonzales didn't play a lot of doubles. It's just tough to do both. Mac didn't like to practice, so doubles was his form of practice. Edberg was #1 in...

    The Best of the best.....

VGP,FiveO don't you think standards should change with time though? For instance, 400 home runs used to be a rare achievement in baseball. With diluted pitching, smaller ballparks, etc, its not so rare. In tennis, in the 70s & 80s, one slam winners were so rare & multi-slam players were...
