Why is Europe so dominant over the rest of the world tenniswise?

Football though, they give you $60 million cash when you sign big contract (Albert Haynesworth, JaMarcus Russell... Although rookie deals have changed now)

If you kept the 1990's conditions and gut strings, the future of the game wouldn't be this bleak.

is 2022 that different from 2012? Fed/Nadal/Djoko are incredibly special. but 1 is finished. 1 is arguably close (but maybe RN still plays if he has shot at FO every year). and Djoko was in COVID purgatory. have to embrace new stuff............ don't remember all the matches but...

i was just going to mention wimbledon mid-late 80s and beyond........ very few actual points... unwatchable i agree... another poster mentioned Goran, i was thinking Becker borg/mcenroe/connors was good......... BUT, check out Borg-Lendl 1981ish FO final. it looks like 2 elite players warming...

Why is Europe so dominant over the rest of the world tenniswise?

i see reference to Canada doing so well in tennis these days (after having almost nothing, other than a very short Carling Bassett run, ever before). canada has recently had 4 mens world class players and 3 womens world class players......... 6 of the 7 are kids of recent immigrants. and the...

Why is Europe so dominant over the rest of the world tenniswise?

I actually don't agree that "tennis is a wealthy sport" (within.reason).... Golf is much more so... Soccer/basketball = almost zero cost as kid $30 racquet, old balls and some municipal space (or cheap sports club) works really well for, little, kids.

Why is Europe so dominant over the rest of the world tenniswise?

lots of good content.. thank you :) i say too much competition with other sports in USA and too much other stuff to do in USA ........ while europe is obviously pretty much dominant in mens/womens tennis these days, it seems like eastern europe is wildly over-represented. less stuff to do...

Does the better server have an advantage in the tiebreak?

i think it's a fascinating subject.......... and as i said, my first idea is that it favours the server (everything else being even)........ but then maybe it's the better player...... i would think many would agree it doesn't help a top 30 player who is very quick and stays competitive by...

Does the better server have an advantage in the tiebreak?

https://www.atptour.com/en/news/federer-fedex-atp-performance-zone-september-2018-tie-breaks alot of stats in there... isner 61.3% tiebreak winner... karlovic 49.9%

where aren't there more aces in men's doubles?

i could be completely wrong that there aren't many aces in doubles. and maybe top servers don't play but why aren't there more aces in doubles? i would think John Isner's serve would be almost impossible to return well in doubles............. i think often the best way to get a big serve...

Does the better server have an advantage in the tiebreak?

OP, interesting subject :) isn't someone like John Isner winning his service games more easily than most of his opponents?........ i think so, but not sure. i think where opponents have advantage over Isner is later in matches (more tired) and maybe players facing service breaks vs. Isner can...

No backhand - no problem... Is this the future of tennis ;-)

As someone who actually does much of this at 4.0 level, there is no way there is enough time at WTA and especially ATP level. Watch how much moderately defensive running the players do Serve with each hand is interesting but even then the ball comes back really fast often Kid should have...

    was nick bollettieri strategy/coaching unique and/or cutting-edge?

i forgot about monica seles. i did remember mary pierce but didn't think she was note-worthy enough. his wiki page also mentions williams sisters, hingis, and rios.... short time touring coach with boris becker

    hypothetical question involving the goats

can't see how it wouldn't be federer/nadal............ djokovic is in-between............... i guess in today's game, you might argue the surfaces have shifted a bit more in favour of nadal/djokovic combo...........

Who wins this French Open ??? ( Best of 7 Sets with 3 days gap between matches )

i'd be curious to see how borg would play in modern era (modern training/racquet/etc.)... and federer/nadal in 1970s it's all hard to picture....... i'd probably choose borg and nadal would stay the best in their eras if you parachuted in greats from other times.

Sinner is the Most Talented Ball-Striker to Come Along Since Djokovic

what's ballstriking though? small players hit the ball so crisply and beautifully... but not nearly as hard.............. and they then obviously have issues with not getting easy points off serve... but they hit the ball incredibly nicely.

Sinner is the Most Talented Ball-Striker to Come Along Since Djokovic

Felix hits the ball really hard off both sides..... seems to have some mental focus/"finishing matches" issues. i realize this comment wouldn't refute the headline, but would Nadal be considered the best ballstriker?........ so unique though, hard to compare.... i will say this. i've watched...

    was nick bollettieri strategy/coaching unique and/or cutting-edge?

hi, haven't posted here for a long time. was talking to someone today who's child is really interested in tennis and a very good player....... 12 years old. anyway, mentioned nick bollettieri and his legacy... and the father had never heard of him. he was from eastern european country so i...

    The Vilas #1 Debate Continues...

thanks for all the feedback. it is confusing with different tours............ and it looks like the arguments are ONLY: 1) 1975 and 1976 weeks where they didn't redo rankings, 2) the appalling way they ranked the players in 1977. FYI in 1977, GV was 130-15. Connors was 68-11. i think Connors...

    The Vilas #1 Debate Continues...

how can vilas not have been #1? it is completely bizarre..... people pick apart vilas' wins. fine. but then the #1 was someone with far fewer titles and no grand slams. so basically way fewer titles and not so much quality over the two period, he had 19 to 9 wins for connors.. borg probably had...

    The Vilas #1 Debate Continues...

mentioned in article but it looks like they based it on some sort of "points per tourney entered", complete opposite of how they did the WTA rankings that made Woz #1. seems bizarre though, in 1977, Vilas won 16 tourneys vs. 3 for connors. grand slam = 2 to 0 Vilas 1976, Connors 6 wins to...

https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/29237076/an-argentine-journalist-13-year-quest-do-right-tennis-legend-guillermo-vilas very very good article. seems bizarre that Vilas was never #1 based on 1977 season and that the person who had the #1 ranking was jimmy connors. i believe Vilas was #6...

why ATP players generate more spin and power then WTA players

good comment........ i'd be curious as to how a sharapova strategy would work on the ATP. i wonder if the ball would literally sail long too much........ i'm canadian so very familiar with genie bouchard. same thing as sharapova. just hammering everything flattish as hard you can.. i think genie...

why ATP players generate more spin and power then WTA players

i am a 4.0 on a good day and i played a set against a former top 100 NCAA player. played at a big football school. won a set against one of the top money winners of all-time (not near the top of the money list any longer) i found his shots jumped upwards and i wasn't used to it. or didn't have...

why ATP players generate more spin and power then WTA players

no expert, but i thought the big serve followed by big forehand is passe (not that that makes sense..... it should be very popular in mens game)..... don't hear of it much these days? i think people attribute it to bolletieri...

why ATP players generate more spin and power then WTA players

the greater use of flat strokes in WTA is interesting...... one huge difference is that the serve dominates so much in mens game. womens game is often more like normal rallies. how would a sharapova that was 30% better do in the mens game? kinda like connors in style.......

    The three great two handers.

actually, someone i think hit the nail on the head........ advent of junior tourneys. whereas as kids didn't play competitively (or at all) before that.
