Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

I just wanted to add that at 12 1/2 months, my issues with my knee becoming uncomfortable when sitting for extended periods at a 90 degree angle seem to have finally resolved. On our current trip, we had a 4 1/2 hour flight, followed by a 10 hour flight. We also had two 90 minute flights, and...

Is running at 10 pm a good idea?

None of those issues apply to me. At age 63, I take no prescription meds, my blood pressure is 115/65, and I’m anything but depressed. I am sure, though, that if I had not done the things I did, I would have gotten more sleep but be overweight and miserable, probably suffering from many common...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

@drak Very good progress for day 10! Don’t worry about your quads firing properly. That will take months. Even though I was playing singles tennis very early in my recovery, the full use of my quads, especially in those last 10-15 degrees before full extension, took probably five or six...

Is running at 10 pm a good idea?

Like I said, life circumstances dictated I either do that or don’t do the things I love, which were to have children, spend quality time with my family and wife in the evenings, and physically exercise. My philosophy was that life is not guaranteed - I could die any day if a bus runs me over...

Is running at 10 pm a good idea?

I didn’t work out every day - probably only three out of five work week days. The other two days were spent studying and I got to sleep by midnight. I would always sleep one long day on the weekends where I’d get 10-12 continuous hours of sleep and that seemed to revitalize me. All the...

DATA: progression of a practice session --> hitting the wall

I was a fast sprinter back in the day, and according to a wheel based power meter I topped out at 1800 watts for five seconds. 1.8 kw X 5 seconds / 3600 seconds = 0.0025 kWh. 1800 watts is near the level of pro sprinters, who probably top out at about that same level at the end of a Tour de...

DATA: progression of a practice session --> hitting the wall

No, I don’t have an Apple Watch. I did have a Fitbit which gave me an estimate of 50 ml/min/kg after I used it for several bike rides, but the margin was plus/minus 10%. I don’t know what the Fitbit used to generate that estimate. It was a basic model with only heart rate.

DATA: progression of a practice session --> hitting the wall

Sorry, did not see this until now. I’m 63 years old now so it’s nothing like it was when I was my most aerobically fit in my early to middle 30’s. Then, I was a 400+ watt guy on a bike. Assuming that I made 75 watts per l/min of o2 intake, my total oxygen intake would have been around 5.5...

Is running at 10 pm a good idea?

When my kids were young, I was doing long distance cycling events and competing in running races and duathlons. I’d train after the kids were asleep, usually starting around 10 pm and finishing up around midnight, either cycling or running. I learned how to shut my body and mind down...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

That was a question that came up before. I asked and I still have my ACL. It’s more effort to spare it but results in more stability. The recovery is a bit more difficult with the ACL but my ortho says that for athletic movements, it’s worth it.

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

@djNEiGht Hang in there. Most nearly everyone turns a corner and starts progressing more rapidly at some point, and you will get there. I did have a four month period between committing to the TKA and the actual surgery - that was just how busy my ortho was. I was probably a bit reckless in...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

I had my one year follow-up a couple of days ago. Basically, everything looks good and continue doing what I’m doing, with the understanding that there is some possibility my knee may wear out in 15-20 years. Next checkup is three years from now. I’m starting to let loose with running on the...

THE complete list of TW Posters' videos

I'm very late with this - I haven't been on the forum much the last week, but @onehandbh made his annual trip to my neck of the woods and we got to hit again. He had the shot of the year - a sharply angled tweener winner that was a thing of beauty! I'll get the raw video uploaded in the next...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

So tomorrow, 12-27-2024, is one year to the day from my knee replacement. I remember the trepidation I felt one year ago from right now, when I couldn't sleep well from wondering if I was ready for such a major surgery. My knee is still improving. In everyday activities, I just don't have...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

Merry Christmas and best of wishes to you and everyone! Yes, all of us are different. I was cleared to stop using a walker on day five, the day of my first PT appointment. From my post #112, it seems I was able to walk up the stairs leg after leg and unassisted. I do remember using a walker...

Whats the difference Tourna Silver 7 Tour vs non tour?

I used S7T for a few years and switched due to the number of shear breaks I was getting. I went to Confidential, which has nearly the same launch angle, with slightly less of a lively feeling but much better comfort on mid-hits. Tension maintenance is nearly as good and Confidential is also...

    Bellevue (Dec 12 - Jan 10)

I checked just now and tubing is open at the Summit at Snoqualmie, but no lift tickets are available before Tuesday, December 17th. If anyone has any other local ski information, please post it here. Snoqualmie pass is snowing hard right now, and chains are required except on all wheel drive...

    Old Wooden Racquets

I don’t have any of the wood racquets that I used back in the 1960’s or 1970’s (yes, I am old). And at that time, I was just learning tennis and wasn’t discerning at all about how a racquet performed. Today, I definitely notice differences between frames but it’s sometimes hard to know if it...

    Old Wooden Racquets

My first racquet was a black Gonzales Autograph! If your intention is to have fun hitting, I'd suggest using the string material you normally use as it will give you a familiar launch angle and impact response. If you want to experience tennis as it was played decades ago, then you can use gut...

    Ball Machine weight/size questions

I just have to say that I do have a smart car and have carried a full sized Playmate ball machine in the trunk area with no problem. I layed the Playmate on its side and I had a big plastic bag of tennis balls stuffed into the ball tray area, and had my 12 racquet tennis bag on top of the...

    Golfer’s Elbow

There continues to be evidence that cortisone shots will eventually degrade soft tissues. It might be something to talk to your doctor about before going that route again. I wish this were known back in the day. I had probably 8-10 cortisone shots in my neck for a nerve impingement caused by...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

Much of that sounds like you have swelling causing your discomfort, like you said in post #355. It can’t hurt to try a compression wrap on your entire leg to see if that could relieve it. It is what I’ve advised the several people at my club to do and they have all gotten relief from it...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

So sorry to hear that. When are you experiencing the pain? It is true that healing continues for a long time. I had a rapid recovery and thought it was as good as it was going to be at about the six month mark but even now at 11 months, things are still improving. My left knee is still...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

I remember during my earlier PT sessions that they always started with massage, starting at the ankle and massaging upward past my knee. I asked why and it was to remove as much swelling as possible before beginning the exercises. It always felt so much better after the massage when the fluid...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

There were questions about whether or not surgeries retained the ACL/MCL during knee replacement. It would be interesting to know what your surgeon did. Ask to see why your orthopedist thinks you are still having significant pain and what can be done to manage that. As I said before, my pain...

    Bellevue (Dec 12 - Jan 10)

Okay, the rule is that I can have three guests in the court only if the court has not been reserved by 8 pm the previous day or that same day. Otherwise, there must be two members for two guests. So that pretty much leaves courts at 6 am or 7 am, and sometimes at 2:30 pm. Everything else is...

Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

You do need to get rest and be able to do your range of motion and other PT exercises so there's no reason to avoid the opiates if it can help you to do that. You also need to rest so your body can heal. I've helped five or six people at my club with their knee operations since mines, and...

    How do appeals work

The only USTA teams I‘ve played on in recent years were the 55+ 9.0 teams that I captained, so the only captain wondering about me is me. I just don’t have the experience playing doubles to be competent at the movement and teamwork aspects. I tend to also make an inordinate percentage of...

    The "line drive" serve.

@socallefty I think the OP is talking an underspin serve with no sidespin, that is hit with an Eastern forehand grip using a hammering type motion while facing straight on to the net.

Hah! Well, that is a way to circumvent rules that I haven’t thought of! You do remind me that I haven’t asked what the current rule is regarding numbers of guests on a court. A member of our club that I know well (and occasionally instruct) is a famous restauranteur. Let me see what he...
