Tennis is literally dying. Average age of TV viewers of ATP matches was 61 years

U.S. ratings or worldwide? I'm not surprised in the U.S. It's become something of a minor sport. You drive by courts now and no one's playing. Back in the '70's when I was in my teens all the courts were full and people were waiting to play. For whatever reason people stopped playing tennis...

    Agassi vs. Connors In prime

Connors grew up in the St. Louis area and one of the places he played was the old St. Louis Armory. It had wooden basketball floors. I'm from St. Louis too and I played there a few times too. It was unbelievably fast. I've never played on a faster court. Conners did have a weak serve. The real...

2019: What a Great Year for ABZ

I don't think it's this. I think most of us would like to see the younger players step up. Zverev can come across as arrogant at times. The dude is basically broken at the moment. He needs a new coach. He may need to step away for a short time. It could also be that the younger players may...

How much did the Nadal win take out of Federer?

If Federer has an extra gear, he'll find it. He knows he doesn't have too many more chances like this.

"It does not seem right that Wimbledon is the only tournament to have it's own seed criteria" - Rafael Nadal

Just imagine if they sped up the courts to the speed they used to play at? "It is not right that they make the grass more like the grass and less like the clay!"

Want to fix your strokes? Playing 2x a week won't do it.

You get diminishing returns via practice the better you get. The improvements get smaller and smaller, and it can be frustrating. So I try to have the attitude that I'm playing for fun and exercise. Aging is taking its toll on my game too. I remember I took up golf in my 20s and I was able to...

Zverev: 'I may become No. 1 at the end of season if I win all matches'

"ABZ, easy as one, two, three..." And he goes down to giant-killer Dustin Brown. Brown can play himself some tennis on grass.

Is Kyrgios the most famous nobody? (Career wise)

Unless he's dogging it for whatever reason. That's no fun. And that's the problem. Which Nick are you going to get?

Kyrgios made history? First point won by underhand serve!

Players take medical breaks all the time just to throw off their opponents. I don't see this as any different.

Kyrgios made history? First point won by underhand serve!

Nadal returns from such a deep position I've always wondered why more players don't try to slip a dink serve in. You hit it right I don't think Nadal gets there in time.

2019: What a Great Year for ABZ

He was defending 600 points. He may slip down the rankings another spot if Tsitsipas or Nishikori make a deep run.

Tsitsipas: Djokovic has "the best backhand I have ever seen in a human being"

He seems to be able to put his backhand where he wants it, with pace. That's got to be tough to deal with.

Why some posters don't like Nadal?

I don't dislike Nadal but I don't want to see him eclipse Federer's slam record. It's as simple as that. I prefer Fed's game over Nadal's. There's more flair and artistry, and he can win points in more ways.

Federer is exception , not the trend

Just wait for the messages if Nadal goes the entire clay season without a win. OHMYGOD NADALISDOOMED! Although it does look like he's begun to decline a bit. Still, Nadal in a bit of decline is still a top 3 player.
  15. M

Nadal only loses on clay, he does not get beat

So Fed changed rackets and started hitting his backhand more aggressively after he started to decline. I wonder if there's something Rafa can do? He's always had great hands at the net, despite some weak volleys in the third yesterday. Maybe he gets a bit more aggressive and tries to shorten points.

Nadal only loses on clay, he does not get beat

When the opponent who beat you is 20 years old, he's not a journeyman. He's a young player on the rise, taking down an aging lion.
  17. M

Nadal only loses on clay, he does not get beat

I have no problems with that. Their legacy is cemented. They are all GOATs. They have no need of money -- they might as well play for no prize money. But don't whine after a loss. Give your opponent his due. Say you hope to play better in your next match but the guy who just beat you made a...

Nadal only loses on clay, he does not get beat

So he should have played well enough to win. Why didn't he? "If I hadn't thrown that interception we would have won." Don't throw the interception. "If I had put the pitch where I had been putting it all day, he wouldn't have hit it out." Why didn't you put it there? Anytime a pro tennis...

Nadal only loses on clay, he does not get beat

Exactly. Early in his career Connors was a jerk out there. I was so happy to see Ashe beat him at Wimbledon. Up until then Connors seemed unbeatable. Later, especially when Connors made that historic run to the semis at the USO at 38 or 39, he was awesome and everyone was cheering for him...

Let Us Now Fix The Bull

Probably depends as much on the fitness level of the opponent. Rafa still has a psychological advantage on clay, and even more so in Paris over five sets. Tsitsipas also seemed to be breathing hard in that third set. He was feeling it too. As an aside, one of the remarkable things about Borg...

    Kyrgios performance in Madrid

Not true. This is not even worth going into, but simply look at the pure athletic sports. Some people, no matter how hard they work, will never be world class sprinters. Also Bo Jackson. You gonna tell me he didn't have more athletic ability in his little finger than 99% of the population? A...

    Kyrgios performance in Madrid

I suspect you are simply trolling, but Nadal, that slacker, is one of his detractors: "He is a player who has enormous talent,’ Nadal said afterwards, as reported by ESPN. ‘He could win Grand Slams and fight the top positions of the ranking, but there is a reason why he is where he is. ‘He...

Nadal may retire at end of French Open

It's a bit different now with all the money in the game. These top 5 players can afford to travel with a small army of trainers, medical staff, nutritionists, coaches, etc. They understand better how to keep fit and how to stay healthy. It's no surprise they are winning later in their careers...

Nadal may retire at end of French Open

I don't think he will retire but he might get "injured" if he loses in Paris and skip Wimbledon and focus on something he at least has a chance to win, the USO. But yeah, if he goes winless for the clay season, that will put some bad thoughts into his head. He might have to try to line up his...

Let Us Now Fix The Bull

I'd love to know how many RPMs he's getting on his forehand these days. It doesn't look like the younger Rafa forehand. Tsitsipas hits a one-hander. Nadal used to chew up players like that by hitting the high-bouncing forehand there.
  26. M

Is this the end for Nadal? Or will he come back once more?

That's what I was thinking. He missed some easy shots in the third set. I will attribute that to him being tired. I don't know if he would have had two more sets in him if this was a five setter. His forehand doesn't put players on the defensive the way it used to, either.

    Roger is playing Rome

Gotta think that's out of reach unless Fed can pull off a double win at Wimbedon and the USO. Djokovic's in the finals at Madrid now and will be adding points and stretching further away from Fed. Match wins quite doable. Tournament wins will be tough. He'd probably have to win a couple at the...

    Roger Federer and RG 2019

You never know when Nadal is going to get a Nadal injury. You never know when Djokovic will go mental again and disappear into the forest in his head. You never know when Thiem...well, I don't know a lot about Thiem. He hasn't quite become the Dominicnator yet, however. You do know that...

Will Fed get to Connors 1,256 match wins?

I think 1256 match wins is very doable. 110 tournament wins is tougher unless Fed starts playing 500 point tournaments. He played Rotterdam recently. Was that a 500 point tournament? He saw an opportunity to climb to #1 and grabbed it. Maybe he will look at 110 and think the 500 point...
