    Can a 4.5 play with a 3.0 in 7.5

My takeaway from this is that you can stay in shape without playing tennis and still play at a decent level

Can old players still play well?

Someone who played college AND has taken their diet and fitness seriously AND played enough tennis AND avoided lower body injuries for another 20 years. Extremely rare from what I've seen.

Can old players still play well?

Most 3.5s I've played with are 3.5 because of lack of consistency rather than lack of fitness. They'll miss in the first 3 shots due to poor technique or poor decision making instead of missing the 10th ball because they're out of breath.

Sorry, I need to floss the cat

It's not about where tennis fits into your priorities. You know your schedule. If you're unavailable then you say that you're unavailable. Where I live league is the same day and nearly the same time every week. If you have another commitment during that time you should save your $20 and not...

Is this serve good enough for 4.0?

Some 4.0s only have a serve and some 4.0s have garbage serves but will get to anything if you don't force them to miss. Anything from <50 mph to 100+ mph is 4.0 range.

What winning percentage is expected at level before playing up?

Pretty much what I said but in different words. Bored as a self rate in league *should* equal getting bumped.

From Adult Beginner to 4.0 - possible?

The return of serve is an interesting point. I've played a handful of 3.5 players who cannot return a well placed kick serve and I'm 5'8. I've seen 3.5 players serve one of 3-4 ways that could contribute to them missing a lot of returns against other 3.5 players. 1. The player who hits 100+...

From Adult Beginner to 4.0 - possible?

My opinion - 4.0 singles players will have a strength in fitness, the serve, ground-strokes or overall strategy and usually a weakness in one of those areas as well. They will use that strength to beat 3.5 players and lose to 4.5 players who have an edge in at least 2 of those categories. 4.0...

What winning percentage is expected at level before playing up?

8-1 isn't quite enough info to say you're getting bored at the level unless you've had 5+ blowouts. It's quite different than being 9-0 and never dropping more than 2 games per match.

Why are the number of USTA league players so low?

Most of the new players, are new players. And someone once said that most 3.0 players have never heard of USTA.

My doubles partner is a ticking time bomb...

if 3.5 players have the ability to target a specific player then you might not be doing enough with the balls you're hitting. even if you are the stronger there is still plenty of room to improve.

too much USTA is toxic for tennis development.

This is also a good strategy (y)

How windy is too windy for you ?

For practicing fundamentals 10+ mph wind can be difficult but the wind differences on each side during a match are what tennis is about

too much USTA is toxic for tennis development.

The perfect mix is 1 practice per week and 1 match per week and/or 1 tournament per month.

How Has Your Game Changed as You’ve Gotten Older?

At 16, 90% of my serves were kick serves at the backhand and I loved my inside out forehand and slice backhand. At 26, with an on-and-off elbow injury, I have more reliable serving options, slice more forehands, often times prefer having 2 hands on the racquet instead of 1 and I get to the net...

Drop shot in league singles, just got abused for using it...

I love these posts. I frequently use a slice forehand approach which disguises the drop shot approach well.

Sunday chat "nice shot" during matches

Always applaud when your opponent in doubles when they hit a return winner down the line when you didn't poach. And don't partner with players who will tell you to guard that small part of the court that is immediately adjacent to the area that is outside the court which also requires the...

    Manners on the Court

In the winter I play in a rotating doubles group where we play 1 set with everyone on the court and most of the time the highest scorer moves up a court the next week and vice versa for the lowest scorer. It's mostly players on the 4.0-5.0 players in my club and most players are there purely...

    Public Tennis court etiquette

I agree with you in there is a ton of value working with a professional to fix issues with your game. My background is that I took maybe 5 total hours of private lessons as a junior which got me good enough to get into in the 4.5 range as an adult after a break. I practice 1-2 times a week with...

    Public Tennis court etiquette

Terrible value. Essentially 30x the cost of balls. You'd improve much more playing 30 times with fresh balls every time paid for by you.

    Serve +1 getting neutralized, help!

This is one of the most difficult shots for me to change direction AND spin. When I'm serving deuce court and I receive a backhand or a weak ball over the middle I'm going to the ad court nearly every time but if I receive a heavy topspin ball that challenges my forehand I'm sending it back...

When to retire if you’re cramping

I eat at least a banana after a long first set or if I sense a match could go 3 if its a regular 3rd set. I'm also alternating between water and gatorade each changeover. Sandwiches and fruit between matches until day is finished.

How to prepare for big matches

If your focus is solely on a match/tournament then take 1 of the 2 days beforehand off and have a light hit on the other day. Hydrate and eat as normal unless you're planning on playing more than 2 hard matches in 2 days then carb load if you like. If I have a racquet that is close to breaking...

Is it bad etiquette to drop shot older guys during league play?

100%. I squeaked into the 4.5 range. Against 4.0 players I have to play my best to win a close match sometimes but against the few 3.0 players I've run into my B game is close to winning golden sets.
