Thank you! My thought was that he'd likely play Tuesday, since he hasn't played in past weeks and that would give him a day off before playing again Thursday. But I'm assuming you know his own personal patterns from following him in past tournaments? If so, that would trump my speculations :)

OP, it could be that your focusing on a loose grip was affecting your swing path and you weren't hitting sufficiently through the ball, and when you stiffened your grip your swing changed so you hit more through the ball. If so, the primary issue wouldn't be the loose grip but the swing path...
