    Match statistics 1959-present

Thank you Bturner and others who have left messages, I am alive and well, and still involved intermittently with tennis history, though not as regularly or deeply as I was before. However, I’ve been away from tennis before, sometimes for years, and always returned. Right now I’m enjoying being a...

    Stats for 1987 Wimbledon 4th Round(Connors-Pernfors)

Pernfors can also be seen at his best against Cash in Davis Cup. Cash gave him a target, like Edberg/Becker/Leconte at RG, and Mayotte at Wimbledon. Boxscore in the New York Daily News:

    Record for consecutive points won

Emerson had that 27-point streak against Rosewall but he had another long one, this time against Pancho Gonzalez. And it was in the same place -- Hollywood, Florida, on clay. He beat Gorgo 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 in the 1970 Tennis Champions Classic, without dropping his serve (11 service games). Fort...

Some stats for 1980 Wimbledon final (Borg-McEnroe)

Thanks for this, I also watched it, fun match 16 games in the fifth set, and 8 of them were love holds. Borg and McEnroe produced 6 love holds (5 by Borg) in their 8-6 set. In their 6-4 fourth set of the '71 final, Newcombe had 4 love holds and Stan Smith had 1. In their 6-2 second set of...

    Match Stats/Report - Agassi-Wilander, Canadian Open semi-final, 1995

Very good, I think this is the first match we've come across in which both players do this.

Nadal once won a set being 1-5 0-40 down, anyone else?

Yeah, Kodes won 9 straight games in that stretch. Match was on clay incidentally. Bud Collins (who had picked Kodes to win the tournament) reported that Kodes served for the match at 5-2, 5-4 and 6-5, and that there were 23 service breaks. Out of 45 service games.

Nadal once won a set being 1-5 0-40 down, anyone else?

Borg came back from 1-5 in the fifth set, beating Jan Kodes 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, 1-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), in 1974 US Pro semifinal. Pernfors was down a set and 1-5, came back to beat Edberg 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, at 1986 French Open (R64). Rosewall beat Gimeno in 1968 French Open semis, 3-6, 6-3...

    Longest games

Thanks for noting this Moose. I got the stats for the game and then decided to do the whole match, to see how many points Wade served overall compared to Evert. In the long game, Wade made 13 of 24 first serves (missing six in a row at one stretch), and made 4 of 6 on break points. She had 6...

    First Serves Under Pressure

1980 Wimbledon quarterfinal, Navratilova d. King 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 10-8 King made her first serve on all 8 match points that she saved. On the 9th match point she finally missed, sending a kicking second serve that nearly wrong-footed Martina, who managed a return winning pass down the line...

Stats for 1981 AO Final (Martina-Chris)

'82 rate is really low for Martina, and Chris' rate actually beat hers. It's not a straight-up comparison because of course a lot of Chris' serves that didn't come back must have been Martina making errors trying to attack them, rather than forced errors. Still, has to be unusual for Chris to...

    Stats for 1983 Wimbledon F(Navratilova-Jaeger)

Tennis Magazine (US): The computer reveals that Navratilova improved her level of aggressive play between the Wimbledon final and the U.S. Open final. Against Andrea Jaeger in the Wimbledon final, for example, she came to the net on 72 percent of the points. Against Lloyd at the U.S. Open...

    Incorrect ATP stats (a survey)

In Sampras-Philippoussis, 1998 Wimbledon QF, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4, ATP has Sampras facing no break points, but he did face three (and he saved them all), in a love-40 hold, per a newspaper report with its own boxscore: https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/1998/540/MS004/match-stats.

    Incorrect ATP stats (a survey)

Here's another one like that, where one player has two more service games than his opponent; but the ATP's stats for this one are wrong. From 1998 Wimbledon, R32 So there were 36 service games (excluding the tiebreak). The ATP has only 29...

Stats for 1987 French Open Final(Lendl-Wilander)

Good to know, thanks. Rare to see him in the 50s. Two others in the 50s are in two boxscores I have from 1986 Cincinnati; Wilander served at 59% both against Sanchez and against Edberg.

Nice one for Mac, and 8-6 in the fifth. And he'd just taken out Becker in straights, the previous round. Do you have Emilio's percentage?

Agreed on all counts, and I've done the same myself. I thought once about doing the stats just for that one game but I guess I never did because I can't find them. Anyway, two boxscores.

Stats for 1988 French Open 4R(Lendl-McEnroe)

My family did not have cable TV channels back then, and neither did a friend of mine who was also a tennis nut. So we turned on our radios (!) and listened for updates, which came in every two games or so. This match was huge for us.

Stats for 1988 French Open 4R(Lendl-McEnroe)

This is the only stat I charted. Lendl made 5 of 10 first serves in the tiebreaks (50%). By tiebreak: 1 of 5 4 of 5 (note, he missed a first serve, then made it, when the pt. was replayed) McEnroe made 4 of 10 first serves in the tiebreaks (40%). By tiebreak: 1 of 5 3 of 5 In that opening...

Match Stats/Report - McEnroe vs Wilander, Davis Cup quarter-final rubber, 1982

This tie in St. Louis obviously depended on McEnroe’s victories in the singles. But it's also the only tie in McEnroe’s Davis Cup career where the U.S. won 3-2 and might have lost one of its Cups if McEnroe had not played in the doubles. In some 3-2 ties, McEnroe won the doubles but the U.S...

Match Stats/Report - McEnroe vs Wilander, Davis Cup quarter-final rubber, 1982

I cannot find a boxscore for this online, though it might be worth looking in World Tennis or other tennis magazines. Wasp, if there are no missing points in the coverage, it looks like they played 499 points. I've done almost no stats on the match itself, though I noted some mid-match stats...

    Margaret Court

Yes, and it's almost still true. I know of one higher now, a 1927 international team match on clay, Tilden d. Borotra 6-0, 6-3, with an average of 8.73 points per game. 6.4 is the most typical average, in the database we've put together.

Thanks for that one, I'm still noting these when I come across them. Found a 13-deuce game in which Robin White was broken at 3-love in the third set of a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 loss to Capriati, 1990 Wimbledon, R32. Exactly as long as the game by Graf and Sanchez Vicario in 1995 (would be interesting...
