don't bother with directionals in rec ball.

Directionals should apply if your opponent hits a shot that put you on defense. On offense feel free to change directions. Neutral it depends

Tools for new stringer (after much research)

Friction doesn’t depend on surface area (physics), in this case it would depend on the clamping force and how grippy the surface of the clamp is (coefficient of friction)

    3D Printing a Pallet

Very cool stuff. Lowest weight that is feasible for ABS I assume? I’m wondering about nylon with carbon fiber and ULTEM.

    Another Serve Advice Request (Video)

You hit it with a lot of topspin, so if you want more juice, then just develop a flat serve. Mix it in to keep your opponent off balance. If you want to improve your technique use high speed video analysis and learn from Mark Kovacs for high level ATP serving techniques. You already do...

Any ideas to make a DIY string stiffness tester?

Do you have a test method to determine coefficient of friction of string to string and string to ball? I think if you’re consistent with your test method, your stiffness values will give you a general idea of how different strings compare, but might not match TW stiffness values if they tested...

Looking for a cheat code string for grinders

Nice I like it. Barb wire has a really high string to string friction coeff. resulting in lower spin potential. Suggest barb wire in the mains and a 17 or 18 gauge poly with a low string to string coeff. in the crosses. I think hyper g round 17 gauge might fit the bill. This is off data not...

    Finally playing to my potential?

Since we never switch to fresh balls like the pros do (in USTA), the balls will slow considerably as the match goes on. As an aggressive baseliner this means switching gears to becoming more comfortable with extended rallies. Your opponent will usually play better in the second as they have...

    Year End Ratings

Some 4.3X (on TR) players bumped to 5.0 on our team. We did make it to nationals semis however.

What sections make the semis at Nationals the most?

When Nationals takes place in 100 degree heat outdoors in Arizona in October when it’s 50 degrees in Seattle, the hot weather states have a big advantage.

    2023 Nationals Week 2 Simulations Posted - 18+ 4.5

Yes it was a great run. It’s all about the journey. You get a silver plate that’s actually plastic and has a made in china sticker on the bottom, haha. The crystal trophies of the past were much better.

Yes, he was 4.3 on tennis record last I checked, yet 8.9 utr in singles and 8.6 utr in doubles. That dynamic rating does not pass the sniff test at all. There are some players in particular on another team who we played in sectional finals who are new to the area and dynamics likely don’t...

    Surprise AZ Nationals?

Airbnb with the team! Hot tub + pool. Hit up in and out for a burger and fries when your team is eliminated or if you’re a doubles player, it’s super close to the facility. Sonoran hot dogs to be found. Amazing Mexican cuisine but have to drive to Glendale or phoenix for the good stuff. Desert...

    Brad Gilbert's coaching

Disagree. These players aren’t mentally weak but have weaknesses that people told them forever to fix: Roddick: fix his terrible backhand Coco: fix her terrible forehand Murray: fix his passive gamestyle Gilbert came in and told them that these things are all fine and I’m going to maximize...

    Let's talk about returns

Yes the caveat is coming to net at the right time has the highest % of points won at the ATP level. At the baseline players have won majors only winning 49% of points. Djokovic highest win percentage at the baseline at 55%. There’s a specific approach shot that has the highest win percentage at...

    Let's talk about returns

There’s plenty of players that could attack the second serve but don’t because of mindset. Heck I was one of them. You drive it deep to their longer backswing shot down the middle. This puts the percentages on your side early in the point. Pretty easy to understand. Funny how the data shows...

Smallest racquet headsize for rec level that isn't an ego play?

Open string pattern only for <4.0 NTRP?

Why would anyone at the low recreational level use a co poly if they don’t generate much spin? In the end just demo different racquets. Preferably the same one in just open and closed and use what feels good to you. No need to be prescriptivist. Ive used both closed and open for long...

Analyzing unbalanced pairings in doubles in combination level leagues

Too easy for two 4.5s to isolate the 4.0 lady against a low 5.0. Speaking from experience playing 9.0 as a 4.5 and 5.0. Also plenty of friends with similar experiences. 8.0 mixed was definitely different: as a 4.5 you take over the court. Too difficult at 9.0 as a low 5.0 where the passing...

Analyzing unbalanced pairings in doubles in combination level leagues

There’s definitely a selection bias. If you’re a low 5.0 male you’re going to have a bad time at 9.0 playing with a 4.0 girl. 10.0 mixed is a lot more fun. So you’re only left with the best 5.0 males playing 9.0 mixed. The rest hate it.

Is USTA League 40+ going back to 5 courts?

Im assuming trav is referring to the Seattle area. There are a lot of 40+ who play 18+ for sure at 4.5. 90% is a number that was pulled out of thin air. Seattle area usually wins PNW sectionals at 4.5 so it’s not a problem. The two teams that made sectionals this year don’t have any 40+ players...

    Forehand+Serve Form Check

Looks like 4.5 tennis. On the serve I would focus on staying “side on”. Meaning trying to contact the ball with your chest pointed parallel to the baseline. Keeping your hand up longer is a cue that hasn’t worked for me as a coach. Think of your left hand like pulling a lawn mower starter...
