He was over 20 for the majority of the years cited. Perhaps a remedial subtraction class is in order.

Crazy Stat: Federer won his first 7 Slam finals

I’m just pointing out the facts. Feel free to refute them if you’d like. I think you’ll find I’m correct.

Crazy Stat: Federer won his first 7 Slam finals

Indeed. That’s why such great players as Fish, Stepanek, Karlovic, Simon, and Blake progressed so far as to get their only ever wins over Federer in that most pristine year of his. The strong era was born.

Crazy Stat: Federer won his first 7 Slam finals

In the so-called weak era, Wawrinka could barely crack the top 20. In Djokovic’s era, he won three slams. Q.E.D.

Roger Federer admits he cried after losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2019 Wimbledon final

Yeah, he tried to run around too deep a return that point. A good play but Djokovic’s return was just too good.

Roger Federer admits he cried after losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2019 Wimbledon final

Okay, how on earth is that lack of sportsmanship and cynicism? She’s rooting for, presumably, her favorite player, who was one point away from winning the biggest tennis tournament in the world. I’m sure thousands of fans have made similar gestures in similar situations. I seriously see nothing...

Andy Murray - 21 slam titles

Yeah, no. In most of those losses, he was not in the kind of form he needed to be to win a slam anyway. Plenty of early losses before he had really matured, and even something like US Open 2014, where he lost to Djokovic but was still getting back to form after back surgery the previous fall...

Sampras never created such controversy and division among tennis fans

If you you're so upset about what the tennis media is shoving down your "trout"... maybe you shouldn't read and/or watch it? I hardly consume any real contemporary tennis media outside of watching live matches on television (and posting here). Works fine for me. I honestly couldn't tell you...

Sampras never created such controversy and division among tennis fans

It blows my mind that Becker had 3 Wimbledon titles at the age of 21 and then never won another. Tennis was pretty much a different sport back then.

Rank the USO champions of the last decade

This year's final was strange, but ultimately a great match. Apart from a few stretches here and there, neither guy was really all that confident being aggressive from the baseline and hitting through the court. But that resulted in both guys coming to net a lot and both playing some interesting...

Fed vs Nadal AO, FO, Wimb, USO Tally

Pretty much. For a long time, the French was a clear outlier. In the 90s, it was practically a different tour playing on clay. Nowadays, the effect is lessened, but it still somewhat exists (we need look no further than Nadal's insane dominance of clay and his lack of equivalent dominance...

Fed vs Nadal AO, FO, Wimb, USO Tally

Well, I was speaking more of 04-07 and specifically at the US Open, where Fed had to consistently go through guys like Agassi, Hewitt, and Roddick. None of those are quite on the level of peak Djokovic and Nadal, but at the same time Fed's draws had a lot more depth throughout than any of...

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

I can kind of see your point, but I think if all RR matches were best-of-three and the final was best-of-five, it would accomplish pretty much the same thing. In general, I'd prefer to avoid super-tiebreaks.

Federer will win AO 2020 or Wimb 2020

That comment stuck out to me as well. The worst part is him buying into the myth of Nadal being some blue-collar workhorse when in fact he's another rich, privileged European. But still a rather classist comment.

Fed vs Nadal AO, FO, Wimb, USO Tally

Well, I don't want to diminish Fed's accomplishments by any means - 8 Wimbledons is more than anyone in history. But, historically, the French is the tournament with the largest variety of winners. Before Nadal, it's been the hardest major to dominate. Rafa completely upended that trend. And...

Fed vs Nadal AO, FO, Wimb, USO Tally

I posted in another thread, not sure if you saw it, that I was watching some old US Open final highlights, and the 2010 final was just jaw-dropping. If ever a final deserved some wings...

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

Round robin formats were not nearly as uncommon back in the 70s (and before in the pro tour days). I do wish the final was still best of 5, but I like that it's round robin. Literally every other tournament is a single-elimination knock-out. It's a nice change of pace. I wouldn't mind having a...

Fed vs Nadal AO, FO, Wimb, USO Tally

But you have to take into account the degree of domination. Nadal's now won 4 US Open titles. He was, of course, never as dominant as Federer there, who won 5 in a row, but it's still only a difference of one title. Also, as a Federer fan, we've seen how difficult it is to win 12 titles at a...

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

Unless you're one of the half dozen players playing the Davis Cup final, it's the last match of the season. I really don't understand why it can't be best of 5.

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

I sympathize with the sentiment. A grass Masters would be even nicer. Switching out some of the endless outdoor hard court tournaments to something else (grass, carpet [RIP], indoor hard) would be a very refreshing change of pace. I just personally don't want to sacrifice the WTF, which, after...

    A New Negative Record: 5 Years Without A First-Time Slam Champ (2015-2019)

Not that it makes a huge difference to the point of the OP, but you got some of the ages wrong. Cilic was only 25 when he won the US Open. Delpo was 20. Fed was 21 when he won his first slam. Whenever the Big 3, as a collective, finally fall off, we'll see tons of new slam winners. I wouldn't...

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

I've never liked or understood this line of thought. The WTF is the culmination of the fall indoor season. Indoor tennis was a huge part of the tour in the 70s and 80s and it's steadily diminished since. Getting rid of the biggest indoor tournament in the world will only further the...

When are they going to address the second serve nonsense?

I honestly don't care all that much about how long a player takes on their own serve. I may find the dead time boring, but it's their prerogative. When they start repeatedly holding up their opponents serve, it becomes an issue. No player can make Nadal serve faster than he wants to (and thus...

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

Not even, because they have byes and also have to leave room for wildcards and qualifiers. AND players who do get direct entry get 10 ATP points even if they lose first round. They literally get points for winning 0 matches. Talk about unfair.

Fed vs Nadal AO, FO, Wimb, USO Tally

I think it ultimately just speaks to how incommensurable the Big 3's resumes are. Fed's won 5+ titles at 3 different majors. Nadal's won 12 at a single major. How do we determine which record is superior? I'm not sure we can. Nadal is as close to unbeatable as any (male) tennis player has ever...

Anyone else find it amazing that Federer had the energy to do so well at ATP Tour Finals in November and then Australian Open several months later

In and of itself it's not all that remarkable, but it actually is rather interesting that other incredible players like Djokovic and Nadal and Sampras are so far behind. In the end it only really speaks to Fed's remarkable consistency at both the WTF and the Australian. Not sure it warranted a...

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

Most Fed fans don't. But there are some trolls who definitely do diminish the Olympics. I do wish it still offered points. I know it's weird since the victor can't possibly defend them the following year, but it feels wrong for the Olympics to be worth 0.

WTF should not be worth any ATP points.

But by that same logic... every tournament lets in only a small portion of the overall field of professionals. A guy ranked 200 isn't going to get direct entry into a Masters tournament, and all the players that do get direct entry automatically get a huge points bonus in comparison. If your...

I'm watching highlights of some of these finals (and checking out the match stats to flesh out the context) and man... 2010 Nadal was just nuts. Both guys were hitting the snot out of the ball in that final. Frankly, I'm surprised Djokovic managed to snag the second set. Probably the highest...
