Are extraordinary events meaningful or just random?

Maybe a strange title for a thread, but I didn't know what to call it. On Saturday I was driving home back from picking some papers at work. It is a fairly broad road (3 lanes each way separated from a large median) surrounded by trees. There is a lot of wild life of all kinds: birds...

I know what the purpose of life is

As there seems not to be conclusive evidence of what that purpose is (beyond living itself) or whether there is any, then it comes down to mood. Someone in the apex of exaltation, love, success, etc, will probably believe in some sort of transcendental meaning, whereas the opposite is true for...

I know what the purpose of life is

So it seems to be. Then, I'm already predisposed to sullen moods by nature, so when something bad happens it's all bleak. I normally have a good (even dark) sense of humor. I suppose it's like a shield for me, but it's being of no help at the moment.

I know what the purpose of life is

Yes, humor is great. One of the few things that can cheer me up when I'm down. :(

I know what the purpose of life is

This is only true to a point though. There is a palpable reality, and we can't escape that by wishing or deluding ourselves I don't think. But then, maybe ignorance is preferable, as it seems better to pursue that same outcome under some sort of delusion to make it more palatable.

I know what the purpose of life is

Em... yeah I know, sorry about it. It really wasn't my intention to be a downer, but I was mildly intoxicated and things have been rough. Still, what is the purpose of life, just live it knowing that it is simply a finite experience and that nothing remains? Is there any sort of permanence? What...

I know what the purpose of life is

And why would that be the case? If there were no judges, does that mean doing evil things would be acceptable? Morality is perfectly possible even if God didn't exist (which I'm not saying is the case in any definite way,) by appealing to human empathy, social usefulness, and some other criteria.

I know what the purpose of life is

It was a rash decision to create this thread maybe, but the purpose wasn't to burst any bubbles. I think nobody is going to have any sort of big revelation from looking at this thread. This is stuff people think about throughout their life a lot, and how you feel about it comes down to your...

I know what the purpose of life is

Yes, something. There is always something. Unless you are too young and fortunate to not having been exposed to death and misery without any redeeming value (often talked of as "meaningless".)

I know what the purpose of life is

Empathy is a very powerful motive. I am much the same way actually, and the idea of this thread wasn't to annoy anyone. I was venting off and maybe get a conversation going, though in this matter I think people are either irrationally dogmatic or simply profess to not know or care, and in...

I know what the purpose of life is

There is none. You just get through it as best you can. I hate to burst your bubble. but better that than having some false sense of purpose. Sure, try to be a good person and not hurt anyone, and so forth. But in the end there is nothing beyond. This is all you have. Enjoy, folks.

Why do so many people prefer platitudes to unvarnished truth?

I have come to realize that there is really not much purpose to life in general. You try to make what you can out of things, and that's it. If you are lucky, you can find someone to share your journey and be a good companion along the way. But in the end we are all alone. We come into the world...

Why do so many people prefer platitudes to unvarnished truth?

Because there is only one truth, and it is horrible, and it is disagreeable to human beings, and so everything else (everything!) you have ever believed is a platitude in itself because it deviates and it distracts from that single truth that many people not once in their life are capable of...

Roland Garros, the Grand Slam more faithful to tradition?

I don't know who, there would be different people or the ones that are there now would play differently. TBH, there are so many threads right now disparaging Roland Garros and saying that clay is a garbage surface that I wanted to shake things up a bit.

Roland Garros, the Grand Slam more faithful to tradition?

Peak Sampras is a much better S/V player than Fed. Don't go by what you see from Fed in these conditions vs what you saw from Sampras in fast grass conditions, completely different conditions and play.

Roland Garros, the Grand Slam more faithful to tradition?

You still didn't get it. Nadal wouldn't have won any Wimbledons. Fed might have won 3 or 4. But Nadal would still have won a whole bunch of French Opens. Maybe not 12, but 8 or 9. Different conditions = different competition.

Roland Garros, the Grand Slam more faithful to tradition?

I never said he would struggle. I said he wouldn't have had the same dominance.

Nadal is ahead of Federer in Slams adjusted by difficulty

Meh. Obviously it is not difficult for Nadal to win the FO.

Nadal is ahead of Federer in Slams adjusted by difficulty

This is meaningless. What do they mean with "adjusted for difficulty"? Does it have to do with the ranking of their opponents?

Roland Garros, the Grand Slam more faithful to tradition?

No roof, no lights, no surface changes. Wimbledon is so different now that it's hard to compare this era with the 90s. Would Fed have been so dominant back then? Not really, as in the end he's a baseliner, just like Nadal and Djokovic, except on a different end of the spectrum. I guess what I'm...

Best video game you ever played?

I forgot Grand Theft Auto, a couple of old ones. Liberty City and Vice City. Highly addictive to act like a jerk without any consequences either legal or moral and without actually hurting any real person. @dgold44 just reminded me of this.

My Insomnia has reached a new level !!!! HELP !

Reading before bed is really good. I don't know if it's good for sleep but I do it and I sleep just fine. It's just good in general. I do try to avoid reading on my phone or tablet though, since I got my Nook Simple Touch a few months ago I've been using it a lot. It doesn't have built in light...

    Nadal 10 Federer 3

But how many of those are clay, and how many times did Nadal fail to meet a 5 year older man on other surfaces? I don't profess to understand that GOAT concept, but I dabble in it in the forum just for lawlz from time to time.

As a mid level English speaker, can you suggest me which novel of 19th Century I should begin to read first ?

A few years ago I had a high school teacher who was particularly fond of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and she transmitted that love of him to many people in our class, included me. I remember reading The Scarlet Letter and Twice-Told Tales nostalgically. I should read them again. Apparently Nabokov was...

Nadal with 12 RGs has almost as many RGs as Sampras does total slams; this is starting to get into farcical proportions

That thread was jestful, I really thought Thiem stood a good chance with the way he played against Djokovic and the added confidence. He played well the first two sets.
