How to play against a much better player?

If it’s a friendly match, do as recommended above. But if you meet a much better player in a match that you want to give yourself the best chance to win without regard to keeping things friendly, the answer is junk ball all day long start to finish.

What could the USTA do to increase participation...

Women are already consistently signing up for leagues and almost all league growth is women. The best thing for the growth of men’s rec tennis would be to have an American male player winning grand slams. Back when Sampras and Agassi were winning slams, tennis was much more popular among...

Stop Me Before I Sign Up For 8.0!

A number of years ago, I think there was a motivational speaker (can't remember the name) who popularized the phrase: If it's not a "hell yes!", then it's a no. It's like getting married - if you really wanted to, you wouldn't hesitate. If you are asking yourself if this is the right time...

What could the USTA do to increase participation...

The competitive nature of it is a feature not a bug. I think that is what actually attracts adults to USTA tennis, rather than what drives people away. There are so few ways to participate in fun competitive athletics as an adult, and USTA leagues are a great way to do that.

I Am Really Starting To Hate Mixed Doubles...

Obviously mixed is a different game, but it is still fun tennis. If you don’t like it, don’t play.

I have seen some pretty borderline low 4.0s in 8.5 combo also. They belong about as much as a 3.5 female in 8.0 mixed.

If you are the stronger partner, yes it can be. Especially if you are a 5.0 playing 8.5 with a 3.5.

What is the point of early start leagues? To get players bumped before the actual start of regular leagues? Why wouldn't a sandbagger just sandbag the early start league then? I guess I just do not understand how starting a league early addresses anything.

I see. So for two 3.3 guys that are now 3.51 to start the 2020 season. They will now play each other with both starting at 3.51, resulting in both getting new dynamics ratings of 3.51 from playing against each other, even though they are both still the same guys who were 3.3 before.
  12. Moveforwardalways

    Bumps by section 2020.

The math is a little odd too though. For all the 3.3's that just got bumped to 4.0, are their new ratings 3.51? Or are they still 3.3 but classified as a 4.0? This would make them way more likely to get bumped down next year because they may never get their dynamic rating to the 3.51 threshold...

Lol. Just got a text from a buddy of mine. He is a 3.26 on TR and just now saw that he got bumped to 4.0. He is not within the appeal range. He is not happy to say the least.

This is true - Southern is a gauntlet to get through. It should result in southern winning more at nationals though, but it does not seem to do so historically.

What could the USTA do to increase participation...

Sometimes it is even pretty challenging for a non-club player too. Clubs can be odd places. Overall, I do agree that getting on your first team in an area is probably the biggest barrier to entry. Not sure how to get more people over this hump though. I think the answer is more likely to be a...

    Bumps by section 2020.

I wonder if it really could be that the USTA thinks that southern men's league is more difficult than in other areas. Maybe not at the top end but in terms of depth. Maybe they really do think that a 3.8 southern male is equivalent to a 4.01 male in other sections, or a 3.3 male is equivalent to...

So what are people hearing with the appeal situation. I am wondering if all these guys who would never have been bumped are out of the appeal range. If so, that would mean that the USTA thinks that a 3.8 in southern is equivalent to a 4.01 in other areas. Could that really be true?

I heard that Gael Monfils was a victim of the bump this year and finally got bumped out of 4.0 in Dallas. Guy should’ve been a Dallas 4.5 years ago.

Sounds like you would enjoy 7.0 more. That is, if you can manage to not get hit in the face by all the misguided errant overheads by the 3.5 men.

The appeal range is essentially the statistical margin of error. So if you are able to appeal, you are within the margin of error and it’s not really cheating. This is the USTA admitting they could have been wrong.

But won't they be playing against other upper middle level 4.0s that also got bumped? It would seem that this would be the case and since they will be playing against each other they will generate new dynamic ratings in the low 4.5 range

A rated players are also usually known commodities within the local league - they may be good but everyone has played them before and knows what to expect. S rated players are often unknowns, causing a ton of speculation.

What could the USTA do to increase participation...

The most common story in adult rec tennis is... played as a kid and/or college. Did not play in 20's. Had kids in early 30's. Now is late 30's/early 40's, kids are a little older/lower maintenance, and wants to get back into it. How to keep them engaged the whole time? Hard to say. Ask the clubs...

Maybe tournaments should have tiered fees then. Like a set fee where you pay $X per round and don't pay if you don't advance.

Did Federer and David Goffen finally get bumped out of Houston 4.0 league? Really think those guys should've been Houston 4.5's a long time ago.
