    "Hi I'm Ray's" String Reviews

Hey everyone, sorry for the big gap in posts. I took a break to hike/climb Half Dome via the Cable Route in Yosemite, with a few weeks of training/conditioning leading up to it. The hike was 25miles round trip. Hanging onto a steel cable on the side of that huge rock and pulling yourself up the...

Is there any modern racquet with specs similar to an original Wilson Profile?

I've got the Profile 110 and a Hammer 2.7 that has a very similar frame but 18x20 - both fun rackets. The old Profiles and Hammers can still be found on "the bay." The closest thing on the market in recent years is the the K Factor Hammer 2.7, a very similar design with the beam being slightly...

    Poly string life

^^ Agreed. I've had some polys die after only 2-3hours of use, with most lasting about 6-9hrs. However I also have quite a few rackets that I rotate through and some will only get a little bit of use over several months - none have died from just sitting around in the bag.

    slippery multis

The 3 "slick" multi crosses I've tried recently are Head RIP Control 17 & 16, Prince Premier Attack 17/Premier Control (supposed to be the same, but renamed), and Genesis Thunderblast 16. Those are also commonly recommended around here. Personally I liked RIP Control the most, followed by...

    sticky stuff on my strings

Its sticky enough to keep the strings stuck out of place? Call your stringer and ask what it is first. If its not some kind of wax, I've heard that some ppl put shellac on gut... Shellac has an expiration date after which it does not harden completely, resulting in a soft/sticky coating. Shellac...

    Babolat pure drive substitute?

IMO the Juice is about the same or worse than a PD, TFlash definitely feels more harsh

    Armor-All as string lubricant?

No I haven't. I'm getting enough spin from poly and gut poly. I don't see the need to risk breathing in some random chemicals during play. Thats fine if you disagree. That does change that it always wore out for me after 30min when I was using it with full poly or kevlar/syn or that it ended...

Topspin Cyber Blue 1.20mm (Crosses) Power 3 Control 4 Spin 5 Feel 4 Feedback 4 Comfort 3 Very similar description to Cyber Blue mains: Has a soft-medium firmness and lively/springy feel while maintaining a bit of crispness. Although it does seem to lose that crispness and feel a bit more...

    Armor-All as string lubricant?

It works but only for about 30min, mucks up the tennis balls pretty bad, and you're likely going to breath some of it in. Not worth it IMO. I much prefer just using a spinny poly or gut/poly.

Lead tape under bumper guard to increase serve MPH?

If you can swing the racket at the same speed with the added weight, then yes, but if the added weight slows down your swing speed, then you might actually lose some speed instead.

Racquet designed for differential in string tension

Sounds more like a personal opinion than a fact. Many ppl will say that having tighter crosses will prevent movement/snap back of the mains and reduce spin.

    Racquet Tech Question

It depends on your stroke. Some ppl find that the racket swings a bit faster/easier with weight in different parts of the handle, such as 7in up, right under the hand, at the buttcap, along the length of the handle, etc.. I find that weight concentrated at the buttcap works best for me and most...

    Tame this racket; experiment...

I use a tweener but sometimes use a stock Head Metallix 4 which has very similar specs, when I feel like a lower swingweight. I strung it w/Super Smash Orange 1.23mm mains which is a low powered control string @ 57lbs, and Ashaway Liberty 16 crosses @ 54lb which has a slightly deader response...

    Woofer Grommets to non-babolat rackets

I have a pure storm gt that's a bit higher in SW than normal, so I sliced off the humps on the side of of the woofer grommets and found that they not completely flat - they are are actually raised but only by about 1mm. The humps on the side of the strings are there most likely to exaggerate the...

So insteading of having to open the buttcap and put in the weight....

It should work fine, though sometimes certain glues don't stick well to some lighty texted plastics. I've been doing something similar w/my rackets that don't have trap doors - I sandwich a coin or washer between two layers of duct tape facing the same direction, w/a small piece of double sided...

    Woofer Grommets to non-babolat rackets

+1 Interesting. Looks like PK also invented the Smart Grip that Babolat was using, as my PK Destiny Comp has a Smart Grip pallet.

Could lead tape help my elbow?

So its too stiff for him but he wants you to keep using it even though you're in pain because he doesn't want to buy a new racket or softer strings? :-? Continuing to play w/a racket/string that is causing you pain could lead to something more serious. Try a "slick" multi cross like Head RIP...

Here's a review of Cyber Blue, since there seems to be some interest in this stuff on the boards in the past couple of weeks. Topspin Cyber Blue 1.20mm (mains) Power 3/7 Control 3/7 Spin 3/7 Feel 3/7 Feedback 3/7 Comfort 3/7 Hours 8+. Longest I played it in a single frame is around 8hrs...

my first hybrid and it sucked

Why change two variables at a time and compare a harder poly in a hybrid w/a full bed of softer Black Code? It would've made more sense to try the Black Code you were already using in a hybrid to make a more direct comparison.

Question for Fischer/Pacific - User and Experts

Other than the stuff already mentioned, the frames w/Basalt in the layup have a different feel, similar to that of some wilson BLX rackets. Personally I prefer the feel of the older Fischer frames w/out basalt.

TB in the cross with guts mains

Haha, it probably wouldn't be a good idea. I tried TB crosses w/syn gut because I wanted to see for myself how the shaped cross would interact with the mains since TB mains and softer Iontec Hexa crosses worked pretty well, but in this case the sharp and hard edges of TB were cutting into the...

    Extreme pre-stretching

It takes several hours of hitting w/a poly under tension for it to go dead. The length of the pre-stretch time in this case seems like it might be longer than it needs to be but it doesn't seem much different than a than a poly that was restrung but unused - it would play stiffer and less lively...

    What's wrong with this racket??!!

If the gut has any thick, unwinding strands, it can cause buzzing - clip them off. It could also be a crack that you can't see yet, a user added weight in the handle coming loose, or loose buttcap piece.

Cheering on an opponents unforced error: Do you do it? [HONESTY REQUIRED]

Since it says "HONESTY REQUIRED" in the thread title, I'll say I think its pretty lame/weak to cheer on UE's or dbl faults - it makes the guy look like he can't win his own points so his only chance to celebrate is when his opponent messes up on their own. lol
