Pros who use the Pure Drive

Does anyone know whether he uses the standard or plus version? Also, does anyone know his racquet specs or string tension? He used RPM Blast 1.30 at Roland Garros this year according to Babolat.

Are you able to share the string tension and gauge he used?

Yes, I agree with this and think +2 is average/normal.

How to Find Your Ape Index

Even with my reach I’m not hard to lob because I usually react slowly and fail to adjust my position properly. I also can’t jump very high at all. You won’t see any Samprasesque slam dunks from me, that’s for sure!

How to Find Your Ape Index

I’ve measured anywhere between 6’2”- 6’2.5” barefoot and my wingspan is 6’7”, so my ape index is +4.5 to +5. I don’t have particularly big hands for my height and my shoulders aren’t especially broad, so it’s my arms that are on the long side. I can reach 8’4” above the ground when standing...

Good control poly that plays well at low tensions in the low 40s or high 30s

I’m liking Poly Tour Tough at 40 lbs in my Graphene Touch Speed Pros. It’s very affordable too.

    Loose Poly Strings+Heavy Swing Weight

I’m just an average amateur player (I’m not from the US but I’d guess around 3.5 level) and have no trouble producing spin with my heavy 381 SW racquet. With the way I swing, I don’t feel as though I lose much RHS at all. My FH is a bit like a side arm throw with a strong SW grip.

    Loose Poly Strings+Heavy Swing Weight

My Graphene Touch Speed Pros measure 378 g, 32.35 cm and have a swingweight of 381 kg*cm^2 and I string them at 40 lbs with Poly Tour Tough 1.25. With the dense string pattern it feels a lot firmer than you might expect. I hit the ball quite high on the stringbed on most of my shots, especially...

    Very TIGHT or very LOOSE

Brown, the outlier with the very high tension has a 2-0 winning record against Nadal while Kukushkin and Sock with their unusually low tensions have both never beaten Nadal, with 0-4 and 0-2 records against him respectively. I'm certain that's it!

Why do strings break on serve?

I find I’m the opposite - I almost exclusively break strings when serving. It either happens as a shear break at the tip (which hasn’t happened since switching from Poly Tour Fire 1.30 to Cyclone 1.30) or around 1/3 of the way down from the tip. I think hitting forehands is responsible for most...

    Changing pallets

I definitely won’t be able to remove the glued buttcap without a lot of difficulty! Staples are good but you need to have the right stapler.

    Changing pallets

I used Gorilla Brand 5 minute Epoxy Adesive to glue the buttcap to my Head Instinct after replacing the pallets. That was about four months ago and I’ve not had an issue since. I’ve had several issues with loose buttcaps in the past since I hold the racquet down quite low and swing fairly hard...

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

Thank you very much for all of your replies. I just wanted to say that I’m still planning to share a new video of my serve which should give a much better idea of what I need to improve. Sometime this week for sure.

Thanks, I uploaded those images to imgur from my phone but next time (I’ll take frames again from the next video of my serve) I’ll follow your instructions and use a desktop computer.

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

You’re definitely correct about me trying to spin the ball too much - almost all of my errors are mishits or shots where the contact is too thin and the ball slips off the strings and doesn’t even reach the net. I have no problem flattering the ball out, but the problem with that is I end up...

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

I think I’ve actually described it as a ‘3.0 Jack Sock FH’ before, but that description is so much better! Hilariously accurate! When even Jack Sock’s FH is often described as ugly, I don’t think a word even exists to describe how hideous my FH looks! It is a better shot that it looks I would...

Thank you very much for your analysis! I certainly wouldn’t have been able to work all of that out myself and I very much appreciate that you explained the process so thoroughly - I’ll give it a try myself now. I’ll make sure to post a better video as soon as possible.

https://imgur.com/a/CFzZB Sorry that the photos don’t show up on the forum, but the link should work. The pictures, in order, are: 1. Frame just before impact 2. 3 frames after 1. 3. 4 frames after 1. 4. 5 frames after 1. Estimating the distance the ball has travelled between frames 4 and 5...

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

Interesting - great idea. The recording frame rate was 240 FPS. I went back and looked at the original video and it is actually exactly 28 seconds compared to more than 30 seconds for the YouTube video - not sure why but it’s not relevant in this case. Also I took screenshots at the frame just...

    Semewestern grip forehand (video)

My FH also feels exactly like a ‘sidearm throw’ to me. I’ve been using this technique for several years now and it’s the only technique that’s felt natural. I think picturing the FH as a sidearm throw leads to a very natural swing and I’m that others (including someone else who started a thread...

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

You're probably right, but I know for sure that I don't get nearly as far off the ground as I should (and also that my left foot leaves the ground first, which as a RH server is the wrong order) and so that is another way of explaining why I'm hitting the ball while falling (and almost landing...

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

You make some excellent points. Thank you. Like I said in my initial post, I don’t find my serve to be a weapon at the level I play and when I’m serving poorly it can be a huge weakness. My 1st serve percentage is extremely low and I lack accuracy as well as the ability to consistently hit with...

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

Hi, Sorry, but I played at night today and unfortunately the lighting wasn’t ideal for creating a better video of my serves. I did have a video taken of me hitting FHs during a baseline rally, and although my FH is my best shot it’s certainly far from perfect and I do make a lot of errors with...

Serve Video Advice (3.0/3.5 w/ 120 mph - yes, while true I believe, that was to attract attention!)

Over the last few years I’ve hit a lot of serves. Many, many times I’ve gone out and served continuously for 3 hours or more. Even when serving at close to 100% on almost every serve I’ve never felt tired out (at the time, I usually sleep earlier due to feeling tired later on those days and the...

Thank you very much for all of your replies so far. I’ll be playing again tomorrow and I’ll make sure to take a much better quality video and upload it here. I’ll include a few more serves in better lighting from different angles and some close ups as well.

Hi, I’ve not posted in the Tips/Instruction section before, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for some time. So firstly, below is a link to the video. It is a side view and was taken using the slow motion feature of my iPhone 6 and uploaded to YouTube. It’s 30 seconds long and is just...
