High school coach does not care for results

If I am a college coach and looking at who to give scholarship to, do I give to the team player who helped win a state title, or the kid who thought they were too good to play for the high school with the helicopter parent?

High school coach does not care for results

Let’s take your parent blinkers off. 1. The UTR rankings are flawed. Especially at kid levels. So the coach obviously does not pick a team based on them. 2. The team was (probably) fairly settled and he is making her ‘earn’ her spot. 3. He is mindful of the other team members and giving...

Casual hitting video - feedback welcome

Your prep is too slow. Look at where your racquet is when the ball bounces - particularly on deep balls. You need to be ready before the ball bounces.

    Ball recommendation

After much research, We use Slazenger Advantage Grasscourt Tennis Balls. We are 4.0+. We play once a week of singles for about 90 mins on quick synth grass. We hit up with all 4 balls for ½ an hour the play with 2 of the balls then use the other pair in the next week. There does not seem to be...

    COVID-Glove

2 sets of balls. Mark your set. Only touch your set. Kick and hit the other set of balls back to your opponent. You can flick a ball up with your foot and racquet then hit it back.

Most people have no idea how serious tennis is!

I took my 7yo to the Australian Open a couple of years ago and wanted a match on an outside court very close on the sidelines. My kid had an aha moment seeing how hard they hit the ball! He went from being a tentative hitter just trying to get it in to suddenly wanting to whack everything! He...

When coach and parent don't agree on something....

I think it is really healthy for a junior to change grips and play with it for a while. It makes the players think about the swing path and speed needed to play with a new grip. It makes them understand swing dynamics a bit more. It means as they get older they can change grips for different...

    tennis ball rebounder

Get a rebound net if your backyard is big enough. This is also our soccer goals, the Aussie Rules goals and the cricket wicket keeper! My 2 boys use it every day for some reason or other https://www.**********************/large-rebound-net.html

    Junior moonball

Don’t play comp until they can swing thru the ball. It will only slow them down as they will try to ‘win’ rather than trying to hit the ball properly.

Does a collegiate/pro-level serve have 2 speeds of the racket heard during the serve motion?

I am not sure you are correct. The racquet head speeds up and might have 2-3 speeds. But I am not sure your arm does. The arm should have a smooth action that gets faster thru the swing, but most of the RH speed is achieved by dropping to the back. Practice the fast drop by starting with...

    U7 vs U8 question

Here in Australia (well Melbourne) we don’t do junior by age group. Everyone under 16 goes in groups of rankings. There is A, B, C and D grade with a dozen comps in each grade. And 12 and overs have to start in C grade. My kid is 9 and in his first year of competition (3 years of group...

Will I ever get rid of the bad habit of opening my shoulders too soon on the kick serve?

Your technique is (probably) fine. It is the mental side of the game you need to work on. Fine serving until serving for the match at 6-5 is classic tightening up. The tightness, due to stress/nerves is causing the 'technical' problems. I can recommend "The Best Tennis of Your Life: 50 Mental...

    Artificial Grass with Sand Surface...

I think that the artificial turf courts are popular in Australia because our tennis and tennis clubs are all geared to recreational tennis players It is a nice pastime for keeping fit and having a bit of fun. Almost nobody has a ranking. There are almost no “professional’ tennis clubs, they are...

Doubles tactics question. Can you serve and volley if your partner stays back at the baseline ?

You can’t serve wide then. Serve down the T and serve & volley. It will take out that down the middle gap even if your partner does not move.

Doubles tactics question. Can you serve and volley if your partner stays back at the baseline ?

You need to ‘encourage’ him to play forward. Say you are not expecting him to get anything back - they are just there to put pressure on and force the returner to hit back to the server. Get them to move a bit - ask them to move sides on your 1st serve of the game and you aim down the T. Help...

    Doubles second serve

This. I think if you move back you are giving too much advantage to the other team. You are giving the returner the whole court to hit to and a very safe return option. It puts no pressure on the returner and you will lose more points

    Doubles second serve

First, point out to the opponent that going to the body at this level is not the done thing. Then, stop worrying about getting hit and concentrate on getting to the ball. Keep moving. Look to poach/move when their head is down and about to hit.

Adults that taught themselves (or teach others) the serve: How did you do it?

FFS. The guy/girl can’t serve. He is serving underarm! You guys are banging on about pro serves and all this technical rubbish that is so irrelevant to someone who can’t serve. 1 hour with ANY coach will get him to the stage where he can serve overhead in a match FASTER AND WITH BETTER...

Adults that taught themselves (or teach others) the serve: How did you do it?

Pony up for a lesson. There is so much about the serve that is counter intuitive. And it is really hard to understand what you are doing. Once you have the basics you can use YouTube

Feedback on how to stop these tournament double faults

Didn’t watch the video. But the advice I read here that works for me is to squeeze the racquet really hard before you serve - so that when you serve you ‘have’ to relax and grip the racquet loosely.

Ideas for tennis camp or a tennis pro -- improvement desired

I keep recommending weekly group sessions (4 people). They seem to do them a lot in Australia, but don’t seem popular in the US. They are a cheap and fun way to improve.
