Hey guys,
I’m looking for a racquet that feels like a “wall” at net, the kind where you just put the racquet out and the ball goes back deep with almost no effort.
I really value:
- Stability (no twisting on impact)
- Solid, firm feel on volleys
- Easy depth on punch/block volleys (ball...
If you ever solo practiced doubles play on a tennis ball machine:
What drills you found the most helpful and also translatable to actual doubles matchplay?
Be as detailed and specific as you can be.
While I'm analytical and OCD, I find the FYB video w/ Martinas much more helpful and resonant.
For example on Deuce if it's a body serve into the righty's FH, she looks to poach, but on Ad side, a body serve on the BH is her green light.
That being said, the FYB SIRFO video does bring up...
To give some context:
- 41 year old Left hander with UTR 4.25 for singles and 4.5 for doubles
- Playing winter competition on Saturday afternoons in Australia. Plays singles and doubles on a given day
- Used to play with a Yonex Ezone 98L and vcore 100 but sold them because they were too...
I’ve been playing lots of doubles at 3.5/4.0 level and I notice that there are many players who very successfully hit hacky, slicey, and pushing groundstrokes that would not work that well and at that level in singles, but are quite effective in doubles.
I find my singles groundstrokes not at...
Many doubles strategies I read on positioning, poaching and movement depend on the partner who can actually hit and place a good serve or a groundstroke and move effectively.
However, in many club scenarios, I end up playing with folks who dink, slice, chip, and push.
Being on the net is often...
There was an interesting doubles podcast where they talk about setting up a long term partnership.
Not to be too formal as an interview, but the guest (a pro player/ top doubles player) talked about a questions/topics to carry over.
Some things are obvious like which side do you like to...
The opponents are both near the baseline. A hard shot is going toward the baseline and just before the ball lands one of the players near the baseline yells "Out" just before the other player hits the ball. The opposing team does not go after the shot and the return shot is good. The team...
Just a couple of things I try to do at the 3.0- 3.5 level:
Pair a good server with someone that doesn't have a great serve but has other strengths. Every set you can have the better server serve first even if it is out of rotation.
Pair a good net guy with someone that is better at ground...
My girl has been playing tennis since age 9. She is 15 years old now, a sophomore (10th grade) in high school.
She takes her tennis seriously, although she's not played in any tournaments. It's most clinics and playing with her family.
9th grade was her first exposure to competition. She tried...
I'm relatively fresh to dubs, only been playing for the past 2 years more competitively and I'm at the point where I'm looking to improve. I know there are dozens of threads, but I was hoping to make a one-stop-shop for myself and anyone else that wanted to learn from this brain dump. I'll be...
Playing in my first USTA league this spring, it’s 8.5 combo with a really good 5.0 as my partner. The team and league is mostly 4.0/4.5 combos. Last I checked there’s one other 5.0 in the league (but I also know my partner isn’t signed up yet so who knows final number).
When you’re far and away...
Let's first attack the obvious. Tennis is a sport that's best enjoyed one v one.
I know doubles players are going to have a fit at this words, but come on ya'll, let's keep it a thousand. No one ever gets crazy good and passionate about this game if they don't play singles at all. Doubles...
Now that my work is letting us travel again, I will be in the Port St Joe/Panama City, FL area for the first two weeks of May.
As such I want to stay on court as much as possible.
I'm a guy, average 4.0 NTRP, I play singles/doubles/mixed and am just looking to get in some tennis while...
Hello all,
I am a 67 year old looking for a racquet recommendaion. I have been playing tennis for over 30 years and had to give up tennis a couple of years ago due to injuries. I have/had knee problems, tennis elbow, wrist injury and a rotating cuff tear. I have recovered enough to play now but...
This is my first year as captain of our 2.5 team. All of the gals have been playing at least a couple of years and some for over a decade (at 2.5!). I watch tennis videos, do drills, and take lessons. This last year I learned that we should be shading (following the ball either side to side or...
Hi all,
Was just wondering what attributes made the Bryan Brothers so good throughout their career?
I feel like there is constant discussion about what makes a certain singles player so good or what they excel/lack in, but in regards to doubles, I don't see any of that discussion or nuance. I...
Hoping for some great suggestions. My goal is to improve my tennis....be a better 4.0 doubles player. I have between now and April, 2020 to participate in whatever it takes. I live in Denver, CO but am willing to travel. I'm a retired adult player.
So first question -- please recommend some...
So here is the thing, I am badminton player turned Tennis player. My game is screwed up already. I like to play on net and hit as hard as possible on volleys, specially over head.
But here is something which bothers me. Many a time when opponent team trys to hit a lob and I end up getting it on...
If you see a guy in a neon shirt not switching when he should be and/or setting up his partner for the other team with floaty balls...it wasn't me, it was my evil twin, Jesley Way...we were switching out between points.
looking for winners mens' doubles from 1951 to 1968 on Monte Carlo tournament, asked MC management for this info but they insist I buy their recently published book '120 years Monte Carlo Cup' (which I find exagerated as I only need list of winners doubles...). Anyone can help? Tks in advance...

I am a pretty good poacher, but I want to be better. I would like to learn to discipline my eyes to watch for a "tell" or giveaway that lets me know if the opponent is going down the line or cross court. I suspect it could be the left foot closing or the right hip opening, for the right-hander...
I am currently watching the Aoyama/Yang vs Niculescu/Sestini Hlavackova match and I've never seen a player quite so fun to watch.
Shuko has very little free power, as she is listed at only 5' 1/2", although I suspect she is more like 4' 10 1/2". She makes up for this with finesse shots that...
Hi everybody! I was able to squeeze in a doubles set with my brochachos the other night. One of the court lights was out and there were cars periodically flashing lights behind the forecourt so it made tracking the ball pretty tricky.
I edited out most of the doubles faults and ball retrieving...
