‘Australian Open won’t happen under current restrictions,’ warns Craig Tiley

Federer and Nadal are the luckiest player to ever play tennis. Wimbledon gets cancelled, AO might get cancelled.

Why not just play RG for the next 5 years? Lol.
Yeah, Rafa is really lucky to have had to cancel another USO (which he won "just" 4 times - 2/3 previous years), and REALLY lucky to have had just one warm-up event for FO, which was VERY LUCKILY an indoor event in very luckily during a cold October.

Also lucky to lose his co-lead of M1000s coz much of the clay season was scrapped.

I'm serious. The whole Corona-thing is damaging the GOAT-debate. While Djokovic gets the most weeks #1 gifted, he can't play his best GS tournaments. Nadal might play RG twice in a row, lol. Federer is injuried while tennis is cancelled, what a lucky guy. Are you srsly not seeing the problem right now?

Eureka.

The penny's dropped.

Corona crushed the Big 3 race, it's been damaged beyond repair. This is nothing new though. We've all known this back in April.

Well, not all...

RF is clearly the one to most profit from this coz he's injured. And his records are tougher to break.

We know this already. Your thread is like telling the world in 1948 that Pearl Harbour happened.

I just want a fair battle for the GOAT-status and it's impossible right now. Who knows what would happened without Corona this year? Nadal winning USO and surpassing Federers slam count? Djokovic winning Wimbledon and getting closer? Djokovic surpassing Federers weeks #1 by end of 2020?

The big winner here is clearly Federer. All his records were meant to be broken this year.

We've spoken about this before! Pete Sampras got to rest on his laurels for a few yrs. before Roger took over! Fed has 2 players on his arse before he even retires! :-D

I feel sorry for Djokovic if AO 2021 is canceled. The gods are doing everything in their power to help Federer. This also gives him more time to recover and prep for WC 2021. Federer has more than enough money to have someone build a grass court for him using the same seeds as Wimbledon to practice on.

And there is already another Australian Open that got cancelled a few days ago.

Wimbledon 2020 cancelled: #18
USO 2020 defaulted: #19
AO 2021 cancelled: #20

Hilarious with the photo

Huh? How is any of this helping Fed?

Obviously one less event to change the balance of power! Thiem's been the only one outside of the Big 3 to win a major in the last 4 season! With Roger near retirement, he needs to slow down this onslaught to his records which are slowly falling by the wayside before he's even settled into his rocking chair! :sneaky:

Silly you, Fed has been in a rocking chair since 2013.

Pointless to discuss this now. There is 3 months before this. So much can change.

True, but the cutoff for a decision is probably well before that. It's a huge event and they have to have everything in place - even more so with Covid. They're not gonna decide a week before if it's happening. I'd bet they'd have to decide by the beginning of December if not earlier.

Tough situation - they want the money and they don't want to look bad for canceling it and then conditions get better. But, again, they can't decide the week before.

USO and FO showed that it can be done. But, each country's situation is unique and national and local restrictions obviously vary greatly.

Tiley just figuring this out now?:-D:-D:-D This was a huge issue the minute he announced and Australia has even been retricting travel between states. They are an island nation essentially and they are going to lean towards the very conservative side as they actually have a hope of keeping their numbers down.

You can cancel the Australian Open right now. The government might relax the quarantine rule by the end of the ATP season, but they're almost guaranteed to have a Covid wave worse than any yet as their Summers are extremely hot. Low numbers to now make this even harder to stop.

OCO, the tour bought it, have had it all prep'd and ready! We've been ready for him to settle back into it! Roger's resisting the push like nobody's business! Why should he if the NG'rs will rollover for him all too often? The upsets have started, but not enough to kick him out of the top 4 so far! Thiem's doing his best; Zverev's challenging, but the others still have reverence for the old guy and too willing to accommodate him by "steppin' aside!" :cautious:

I thought winter was worse for C19 then summer?

I've been following the data and Persian Gulf was getting crushed in May as it heated up. Then in the USA it started in Southern states and came up with the weather. The basic problem is when its really, really hot people need to be indoors, probably air conditioned, and in the Winter when its really cold you have the same problem. Here Florida and Texas initially did exceptionally well and then it got hot. Australia is trying very hard, but I've live there for a year and in Victoria on the coast we had a day where is was 110F/42 C and that's the part of Australia next to Antarctica. Sydney, Brisbane, Perth will all be hotterer on average.

As I say you can try to be optimistic with Covid projections and you're always wrong, so the tournament is going to be really hard to pull off. Another huge issue is that the ATP Cup is now the warmup event and the Australian Open on its own a less attractive draw card. Players basically need to blow up their holidays and off-season with the 14 day rule. If the Australians have half a brain they'll pull the plug once they see the rise starting in early December.

If AO gets truly cancelled, it will be hard to take Nadal's eventual slam record seriously. It will have an asterisk forever. Djokovic will be basically robbed of two chances to add his tally in his competitive years. First W 20 and now this one.

High possibility then that RG is played back to back with no other Slams in between. Nadal is the hot favourite for #21 and becoming the Slam leader. A very strong possibility in fact if AO is a no-go in 2021.

Is Djokovic the only one being robbed? Everyone is in the same boat. Nadal is also losing opportunities at winning AO and being the first man to win at least 2 of every Slam. He's also losing chances to win Wimbledon. Nadal's getting up in age so it matters for him as much as it does the other guys.

No everyone is not in the same boat. Djokovic is way bigger favorite for AO and WImbledon titles, while Nadal relies on Djokovic losing early there. Nadal have not beaten Djokovic outside of clay since 2013, he also has not beaten Federer off clay since 2014.

Your intellectual dishonesty is so obvious. Imagine actually believing not playing AO and Wimbledon hurts Nadal and Djokovic equally... Nadal fans are one of a kind truly.

I think all Slams will go ahead as planned in 2021 but with limited to no crowds.

Remember when half the forum was so sure that we weren't going to get anymore tennis the rest of the year? And anyone who thought there was a chance we would was an idiot :sneaky::whistle:

Right now, we are wondering why Wimbledon was cancelled, when the other majors went ahead without much trouble.

bc Wimbledon has pandemic insurance. They don’t need to hold it. also the grass won’t be the same
I suspect that the other majors have insurance, too. The grass at Wimbledon is still there.

I think that they should have gone ahead with empty stands, television revenue is huge for Wimbledon.

Do not worry.
Tiley is Federer's best buddy on the ATP tour.
Australian Open 2021 will happen, no matter what!
:giggle:

As mentioned on another thread, if AO is cancelled simply make Indian Wells the surrogate for the AO.

The chances of the AO actually not having their event have got to be very low. USO and RG went through with no issues. The AO can figure out what worked there and then apply those procedures. I don't see why this is so difficult.
