‘I don't think I need the tennis’ – Roger Federer looks to life after sport after missing Wimbledon

Federer was caught in the transition between the classical style of play derived from the woodie and gut days and the modern topspin game derived from bigger graphite rackets and polys. He tried his best to adjust by moving from a 90 to a 97 but he still could not keep up with the modern game. He was basically the victim of technology changes.

Having said that, I have modeled my game after him due to reasons of injury prevention.

Federer was the fastest to adapt his game to the new string technology in the early 2000s during the weakest era of all time. This allowed him to rack up a massive head start on the slam race.

It was only ever a question of whether his very healthy weakest era based lead would be enough to hold back the much more talented Nadal and Djokovic. He nearly made it but now both have surpassed him in numbers, as well as talent and the game is up.

A Harmony Tan style 1st round knockout would be an embarrassment. He now belongs on the couch.

Do people really need to be so bitter towards him ?

This crap about the game has passed him by etc.

Give the guy his credit. Hes probably the greatest player to ever hold a racket. He may have been surpassed physically by 2 younger ATGs, but lets not pretend he was just an average player in a weak era.

I wonder sometimes, if this place is full of teenage girls, rather than adults.

Safe to say he's not coming back. He may come and play some exho. That's about it. Who would at 40 years of age and do the grind?

Can I ask about what you lot did to Sampras? Can TTW stop pretending that he was an average player "vulturing" a weak era? It's the natural course of events. You reap what you sow.

People who are memeing on Fed right now will miss him greatly in 5-10 years time. I know I will.
Do you miss McEnroe, Borg, Edberg, Wilander, Sampras or Laver? Everyone was consumed by Big 3. New stars will emerge and older retired players settle in history. I once saw Rusedski emerge out of the commentary box and I called out for an autograph. He was shocked as if - what's this guy doing asking me for my autograph? In his heydays as a an active player, he would've signed many autographs.

Stop dreaming that people will be missing them in 5-10 years time.

A video of your devastating forehand is circulating on this forum.

the live version at the grammys in 1992 was amazing. Back when Mariah could still sing.
She is my favorite vocalist ever. The Grammys performance was incredible, for some reason I liked the SNL in 1991 even more.

A true gift she had. At one point I was stuck watching every video of her best vocals on repeat. Mesmerizing talent.

Federer ain't retiring before giving it a one last shot. I wouldn't take these words too seriously. He wants to go out on his own terms. Ain't now way in hell he lets an injury take him out. As he has said he will be back for Laver Cup and Basel to get himself going again, and I expect him to play a light schedule next year customized for the slams with what could be his last year. Tennis fans will get to relive that feeling again of rooting for Federer when he goes out on court to try and win. No doubt about it.

Quite a weapon for the doubles tour!
All jokes aside, from a point construction perspective, the shot was a disaster. A competent baseliner, which Agassi remained well into his sciatica ridden 30s, could punish that shot with persistence. And credit to Federer, he made a major weakness into a great weapon - his short slices designed to lure in the competition set up his rather brilliant passing shots. But a field where Federer is able to compete as a premier baseliner relying on anything other than his serve and forehand is the stuff of nightmares.

Unfortunately Federer seems to have lost motivation because the Slams record is broken, he did not retire in 2013 and went on till 2021 to protect his record, I am glad he did for this long.

Now it seems with Nadal on 22 and Djokovic on 21 he is not inclined to come back and give it a shot at more majors, after all he is 41 and he has accepted it that it is gone forever. If Nadal today was on 19 and Djokovic on 18 then Federer would have returned to take Wimbledon very seriously, I am sure of it.

He still has it in him to give 1-2 seasons of the grind on the tour, maybe till 42 or 43, but he just doesn't want to do it now since the record is gone.

He has contractual obligations to fill when he signed his multi $m deal with Uniqlo a few years ago and whatever else that was renewed before he was injured. Covid and his injury has put a stop to it with his limited exposure to the world.

Not counting him out just yet. Better to judge his level of play for about 6-12 months atleast before writing him off at the majors. With how weak the field is a 41 year old Fed can be competitive. The biggest question mark is how the injury has affected him movement and shot wise.

I am sure there are clauses in it, which allow him to exit gracefully. Takes a pay cut....so what ?

You all think Fed saw this Wimbledon and went “nah there’s no way I can get to the final of Wimbledon again on a load of painkillers with Norrie, Garin and Kyrgios to worry about. I’m done”?

That you post this and have a Srdjan avatar = my mental and emotional circuits are now laid waste by a massive internal explosion that consumed all my neural pathways in a fiery flash of blazing heat and light.

People really want to believe so bad, that Fed is just melting in his own misery for losing the slam battle.

As Nadal himself said, at the end of the day those three are fairly equal and the true orange to orange goat test between the three would have been if Roger was in the same age group as Rafa and Djoko.

He has broken many records is a multi millionaire and has many other business initiatives on the side and somehow we want to believe that life as he know it is over for Fed. SMH.

People are delusional if they think Roger will be forgotten because he is behind Rafa and Novak in Slams. If that was the case every body would be calling Laver, Sampras, etc as average players. Roger will always be the most talented of the 3 and his fan following shows that. No doubt about it Rafa and Novak are ATGs but Roger even after being 6 year older was the only one who provided any competition where newgen have failed massively.

Federer was kept in the game by the grandslam race, the desire to defend his most valuable record against Djokodal. Now that both of them have overcame him, he clearly lacks the motivation to return to the Tour.

He'd need to win 3 more slams to retake the lead, and then there's no guarantee at all that either Nadal or Djokovic won't surpass him again in such a scenario. It's an impossible ask.

Mind you, I don't think he's put in all the hard work into rehab and fitness just for nothing. He'll play LC and Basel this year, and then a light schedule next year, with a grand exit at Wimbledon. I'd be surprised if he didn't stick to that.

His weak one-handed backhand is the reason he couldn't make it to the level of Djokovic and Nadal.
You think he lost the 2019 final against Novak when he had several match points due to his backhand ?

Do you factor the age difference between him and those two at all?
