‘It’s very unlikely for Nadal to become World No. 1 or win a grand slam title again' – Guga

LOL
Even in the case of Federer. That's why he's won only 1 slam in the last 5 years (will be 6 in January)

Well, I wasn't entirely serious, but if you look at what he's done the past 18 months or so, and compare that to anyone else but Djokovic, it looks pretty ****ing impressive, no? And this is a guy who is 34. What has your boy Nadal done in that time?

Ask @RF-18, he believes Federer is a better player today than he was in 2005.

When did I say that? I was quoting what Federer said, I didn't say it.

I'm not talking about last 5 years or last 3 years, I have been talking about and made myself clear 100 times about Feds play for the last 3 months. Nothing else. And during this period, yes I definitely think we have seen one of the best Federers ever. I have statistics that can prove it where he tops some of his old days.

If you claim that the fed for the last three months has not been anywhere near his best then we quit the discussion right here because you are an ostrich if you think that.

It is very impressive but compared to what he was doing in his prime years, you can see the aging process. It's all relative to one's career of course. What Fed is doing would be outstanding for a lot of players but for Fed himself, it's a distinctive step down from what he was doing at his best.

All this.

I think I'm also both surprised & disappointed to hear such a quote attributed to Guga, of all people.

Can't help but wonder if some back-room deal for RFTE to help Brazilian tennis went bad, or something.

or just sheer jealousy that his 3 Frenches were left in the dust

I make fun of Sampras when he talks about current players and always has great things to say about them, over-complimenting probably...but classy...thought Guga was the same as Pete, and not a Becker or McEnroe shooting off whenever they do an interview...just my preference...yes, he can say what he wants, and maybe he'll be proven right....of course he could end up like all the folks who said Sampras would never win a major around 2001-2...just doesn't seem to match his demeanor which was always sunny and positive

Yes because I'm sure he's really concerned that his 3 Frenches were "left in the dust". Look, I think Guga has had enough time by now to realize that Nadal leads him 9 FO's to 3. I haven't read what Guga said and I don't plan to because I don't care about it enough and I won't pretend to, but I don't think jealousy enters into it here honestly. It's not a Sampras-Agassi scenario or a Fed-Sampras scenario directly after Wimbledon 2009 where he was asked about Fed's "GOAT" credentials.

I wouldn't say Guga is like McEnroe or Becker. He still has more class than them. Besides, all he's done is give his own opinion. Nothing wrong with that.

Actually, I bet if a guy like Nicolas Lapentti said Nadal won't win another slam people would laugh at him and say he never did so he cannot judge if Nadal would.

I have no idea how Lapentti had a career of any kind...didn't seem to have any weapons, and played in slow motion...and yet, his ranking always seemed to get him into big tournaments..was ranked 6 in 99 o_O

Bit harsh. He said it was unlikely he would win another Slam or regain #1 as long as Djokovic reigned. Well, Djokovic is no longer reigning and Nadal has just made his 1st Slam final in more than 2 and a half years and has a strong chance of adding to his tally on Sunday. So Guga was actually not far off the mark!
Yep love how this place bashes even the legend Gustavo. Also guga is best friends with Djokovic not fedal. This place is a crack pot zone. Lol

is he giving the trophy out on Sunday?

The anti-/evil Nadal: Guga, you say I no win a slam again, I now bite this trophy while thinking of your head

Well, until Rafa wins it, is not settled.

1. Lost to Wawa at the Australian Final 2014.
2. Lost to Novak at FO 2015 at the quarters
3. Lost to Fed AO 2017 Final.
4. Lost to Querry at a 2017 final this year.
5. Lost to Fed at 2017 Indian wells Final,
6. Lost to Fed, 2017 Miami Finals

So call me not impressed with Rafa on Slams until he does it. Wawrinka, Cillic, Novak, Thiem, Murray, all of them has as much of a chance as Rafa at this stage.

If I am not wrong, Rafa has a high possibility to ascend to #1 sometimes after Wimbledon if Murray fails to defend it. #1 at 31+ is gonna be an incredible achievement :D

No because, most of Muzzas points were in the fall. If he loses at Wembley he would still be at around 8k points

The man is done. It was good while it lasted, but it's time to let him go. Flashes of the old bull may still appear, but once that aura of invincibility goes (and it has) it's early departures in the slams from then on.

His style of play has burned through him. It was more than obvious a year ago.

As they say, "Past performance has no bearing on future results." The clock runs out on everyone.

Well I said after Wimbledon. If Rafa wins RG and goes deep at SW19 while Murray has early exit, there's a high possibility.
Rafa would have to make it deep into the second week for that to happen. I have not done the numbers. Now, for this to happen Rafa has to win it, and he is not locked to win it until the last ball is played at the final.

Don't get him wrong, Guga was quite happy about all the fuss related to Ostapenko's win and that his name was brought up after all these years of being forgotten
So he just wanted to say something, that's all

Pat Cash said the same thing.......Will nadal come back to what he was? and Pat said "i doubt it" with a rather cheery tone of voice!Thankyou Biological Passport!

yep, and also you were horribly incorrect in your previous prediction.

At the time I made the prediction, it was pretty reasonable. Just because a broken clock is right twice a day ("Nadal the Mighty Bull will Rise Again" - all of his fanboys) doesn't mean they're really onto something.

Besides, it's a pretty weak field right now. Even you have to admit that.

Yeah. Pretty weak means pretty weak.

That AO final was a genuinely great match. 5th set was amazing, no matter who won.

(And weak field or no, Nadal was playing amazing tennis in the FO final. Running FHs and BHs into the corners, with consistency, against Wawrinka who is generally no slouch.)

Yeah no kidding, I don't think anyone back in 2015 would have predicted Djokovic would have regressed as much as he did, and then it was also reasonable to assume that some of the younger generation guys might develop and start to really challenge the top guys. So far, that hasn't happened, which is kind of sad.
