According to French Federation President Bernard Guidicelli, Roland Garros Tournament Director Guy Forget reached Nadal before making the announcement.
“We had Rafa on the phone we tried to reach other players,” said Guidicelli during a press conference, according to RMC Sport. “Guy got Rafa on the phone. His feeling is that it is a good decision that allows the clay to stay on the calendar.”

Or stay healthy until August, seeing as he's won TWO of the last THREE US Opens, its a huge chance for him to also tie the US Open record of FIVE titles and then go to Paris in search of #21.

I honestly don’t think there will be any tennis at all this year. Cases in UK are getting much worse. We heading for total lockdown like Spain, France and Italy. No one knows how long this is going to go on. It’s very bad in America too.

The virus is a major threat to many lives. Cases now coming out in different countries that it can even kill young and healthy people. Worrying stuff guys. It’s mainly elderly and underlying issues on the whole though. I just can’t see how any sport will go ahead this year in these circumstances. The world is never gonna be the same after this and will need some time to recover from it.

The sports world is full of sheep, so we'll get an indication of whether the US Open will go forward in particular when we see what the NBA does.

Any virus is a threat to people with weakened immune system. In China they are already thinking about restarting the football championship. Everything will be fine in the summer.

Interesting that Forget only contacted Rafa about his decision. The other Slams, the ITF, ATP, WTA obviously not as important.

I guess being the tournament GOAT entitles you to these kind of privileges.

If Wimbledon has to postpone, I wonder if they will let Federer know first?

Which player will the US Open contact first if they have to do the same?

If Craig Tiley moved the Australian Open and the only person he consulted was Federer, everyone here would lose their ****, and justifiably so. It’s ridiculous to reschedule a tournament in competition with other tournaments with no conversation whatsoever with any major tennis stakeholders. Why Nadal has any input is beyond me.

That said, I hope things work out and we get to see all four majors this year. But the FFT is being incredibly stupid right now.

Today news from Spain report that a healthy 37 years old dude with no previous health issues died due to COVID-19. Another 36 years old who was healthy and did fitness, is right now with neumonia in both lungs after getting the virus.

You are right that in most cases it affects elderly people, however it can be potentially lethal even to people under 40 with no previous pathologies. It is better to take the virus as seriously as possible.

Deary me. That’s awful. Thanks for letting me and the rest of us know mate. You see many of us brits have been living in denial. However this like we both said is really serious and can potentially kill anyone. It’s way more lethal than the flu, which is what many scientists have explained. It all depends what bout of the disease people get and how everyone’s body reacts. I mean I have friends who are mid 20s who suffer diabetes or asthma bad. They will be at risk a lot. Obviously elderly and people with underlying issues are the most at risk. The thing is though we all at risk as we don’t know how any of us will react to it if we end up getting it. Hopefully we don’t.

There have been cases in Italy of a few people in mid 40s who died from it and had no other issues. With no vaccine and no control of this, it really is scary stuff. I mean us in UK are projected to end up going like Italy and Spain. We are behind but numbers took a big jump today.

RG is not known for being well organized.

(The organizers have a lot on their mind - maybe their wife's boyfriend turned gay, who knows? /sarcasm)

You probably right but hopefully they can go the no spectator route. I dont see it for other tourneys but Slams I think they can get enough TV revenue to do it

Yeah that’s the only way it will happen. It’s a real shame. All sports and many events getting cancelled. It’s sad times but we have to stay strong for each other in these dark times.

Yeah it will be ok. Will all Get thru it together. And just imagine the light at the end of the tunnel. That first big sporting event after this is all done. We will all have chills watching it and be so much more appreciative of everything we have.

Carlos Ramos.

Oh wait.....Serena.

Connors in 5 (minute phone call).

Looks bad enough with the scheduling of the 19 RG final, with Rafa having a humongous unfair advantage (having 2 rest days out 5, vs Thiem's none out of 4).

And now Guy Forget colluding with Rafa! Apparently GF has no shame!

I hope RG goes ahead this fall; and Rafa losing to Novak or, better yet, Dom.

I hope everyone you want to win will lose.

Rewatch Nadal-Thiem '20 AO match, you'll agree Thiem now has the better groundstrokes.

If Forget doesn't give Nadal another unfair advantage, I'm betting on Thiem.

So Guy Forget and RG officials are determined to go ahead, come what may! France is very hit by the pandemic, and the worst is still a long way off! I don't see Wimbledon and USO officials making plans for tennis in the midst of the lockdown, which Paris is in!

If Wimbledon can't take place as scheduled, it will move to the post USO slot with the ATP's blessing in all probability.

The FO's attempt at unilateral action, pressganging Nadal into the propaganda war, is a sign of weakness.

the only tragedy would be if the FO was cancelled and nadal doesn't get a shot at 20. We shouldn't let a virus protect feds legacy. LUL

Most tennis fans would cheer exactly that, given that he was given a free ride to the '19 crown, courtesy of one Guy Forget!

But I'm confident either Dominic or Novak will get him this time, given a fair chance, of course!

The reality is that both Wimbledon and the FO should be preferably postponed rather than cancelled.

But grass would probably have to come before clay in that event.

Your post is yet another proof that Rafa haters are constantly dreaming of beating Rafa (by whomever).

Thiem-Nadal '20 AO was reality, but a nightmare to you and other Nadfans!

Nadal will be defeated next RG, whenever it's played!

Novak had two separate 7-0 win streaks against Nadal since 2011, that's also reality!

“We had Rafa on the phone we tried to reach other players,”

I wonder if they tried as hard to reach those “other players,” as they tried to reach the ATP and WTA? Oh right, they didn’t bother to consult with the ATP or WTA.

So the conclusion that’s most logical to me is, once Rafa gave his thumbs up, that was it - the decision was made. If that’s what happened, this is a pretty bad look for RG, Forget, and the FFT (at least). If that’s not what happened, why isn’t Forget, FFT, whoever, out there setting the record straight?
