“The weakest Wimbledon we've seen” - BBC commentator 2022

Are the BBC commentators correct in saying it's the weakest Wimbledon ever?

Guess they forgot about Malisse who pulled out because his heart rate was up or he was scared
Not true. Malisse had the heart issue against Nalbandian in their 2002 Wimbledon semi final after he was a set down, if I remember right. Malisse then went 2 sets down, but got it back to 2 sets all, before Nalbandian won the fifth set. Malisse didn't pull out of the match, even though it did look a near certainty at one point, and actually fought back to 2 sets all.

I think it is controversial because they denied top players the right to play based on politics. But I am not sure the field is overall weaker. I would want to see some numbers before I reached that conclusion.

For example, How much weaker is Djokovic as compared to earlier times he played?

ROFL....Someone saying a Wimbledon with 22/20 Grandslam Champs and with a combined 8 Wimbledons between them is actually weak? Wow!!

And who exactly would have made it a strong one?

I **** my pants in Grandslam Zverev?

I can't win a Grass Title to save my life Medvedev?

I am the world's best ballbasher Rublev?

I am the weakest backhander Bettetini?

Seriously???

Let's see who we actually have?

Someone who actually played great grass court Tennis and beat the World # 1 - Tim Van Rij

A great all court Teen sensation - Alcaraz

A mercurial player who actually is in the form of his life on Grass Courts - Nick Kyrgios

A up and rising youngster who played great level on Grass - Sinner

Players with some Grass court pedigree - FAA and Hurkacz

S&V specialists - Otte & Cressy

A GOAT candidate who is in midst of a spectacular run - Nadal

One of the best Grass Court Champions ever - Novak

PPL are delusional if they think anything about Weak...

Infact I wud say this year is already better than last year and many years in the 1st decade of this century.
The only two worth mentioning out of everyone you named are Novak and Nadal. Nadal was injured, Novak is getting old. The rest are pretty much hopeless. Sure, they will be the future of tennis, sadly. So other than Nadal and Novak who are either injured and/or old and decrepit (and still laying a beatdown on the NextGen), who exactly makes it a strong field?

Embarrassing post.

Certainly haven’t seen a match memorable for both players performing at their peak and nine women missing from the Ladies draw was bound to impact.

That commentator sounds like a bitter Federer fan. I find it funny when people try to subtly hide their bias for/against a particular person in this way.

How much weaker is Djokovic as compared to earlier times he played?
To my eye test, he is unable to hit through people anymore like he did in his prime. He loses BH rallies which he never used to do as he seems to lose his patience quicker. He is mostly outlasting people with impregnable defense and he has become really good at coming to the net to finish points. He needs his serve to be really on to hold serve easily - which happens a lot at Wimbledon.

From a stats standpoint, he has lost the first set in 28 out of 88 matches since the start of 2021 and lost ten of those matches - so, he is much more prone to slow starts. When he wins the first set, he is 58-2 and so, that’s a key tomorrow on whether he dominates or has a tough battle.

The serve and net game help him a lot at Wimbledon which is why it has become his easiest Slam to win.

Regardless if it is, a commentator should not be saying this. Very disrespectful not only to the players, but also to organizers. Should’ve been reprimanded for his comments.

So a commentator shouldn’t express his opinions and should self-muzzle himself in case someone doesn’t think he is giving them enough respect? Why not get some corporate shlubs to commentate instead of ex-players who might have an independent opinion of the quality of what they are watching? Also commentators work for TV companies and their job is to get higher ratings - the players and the tournament organizers are not who they report to.

My usual problem with commentators is that they talk about bland stuff, storylines, effort, emotions etc. and not enough about the actual tennis being played and tactical adjustments happening.

In addition to banning players from certain countries on a whim, maube they should slow the grass down so that it plays like HarTru? That way, everything will be ‘equal’ and competitive, just like NASCAR…oh wait -

There were a couple of very exciting fourth round matches: Goffin v Tiafoe and Garin v De Mugaur. Coincidentally the only two played on court 2. Of course they are really round 2 or 3 matches, not round 4, but they were very entertaining. Goffin v Norrie in the QF pretty fun. Nadal and Djokovic five setters in the QF not very fun because of being NID.

yet nobody of Those you mentioned, besides Djokodal, did anything to Djokodal.

in fact both Djoko and Nadal will be the only players to not lose this Wimby ironically. That’s how weak the rest are

even if he spoke the truth?

the two other commentators were left speechless, probably thinking “it’s true yes, but we’re not supposed to say it out loud!!”

Apologies due to Malisse, I thought he bailed out on that match.

The Russians haven’t done anything on grass except Khachanov, who has been dire this year, Zverev got hurt and who also didn’t do anything. COVID unfortunately took out 3 players who could have done damage but it is what it is and that was unavoidable.

totally fair reason to ignore the removal of the current number one, lol

both AO and Wimbledon are exho slams

legacy of Big3 ruined forever because of due to politics people will argue which slam was asterisked and which wasn’t

You can only hide it for so long. When the 3 best grass players in the world are two over-the-hill should-be-retired guys over age 35 and a part-time player and narcissist clown who is better at hitting tweener serves than he is at forehand returns, it becomes tough to keep saying tennis is better than ever.
I’m afraid you are totally right

EGVX hit a perfectly placed ’tweener lob over Norrie’s head from behind the baseline. Incredible touch. In case no one has mentioned it.

2002 Wimbledon was a strange one, but not bad.
2002 suffered from some decent grass court players, playing on slow grass and around this time most player where using poly.
Players expected normal grass and it played slower and poly affected more so. Players used to faster grass and gut.
Sampras, Hewitt, Phillapous, Agassi, Henman, Johansson, Roddick, Rudeski. Roger was obviously sandwiched between to good results, beating Sampras 01 and Winning 03. It wasn't terrible year.

Worse than 21/22? Hard to say, lots of dangerous players on grass but not so much in poly era.

Federer's stock just went up. Lol

In 2021, the bottom half with Berr, Hurk, Fed, FAA, Zed and Med was pretty stuffed and better than it was in 2002.

Fucsovic, Shapo and Berr are probably the same combined level of difficulty as Nalbandian, Henman, Schalken, not entirely sure.

I think the biggest differentiator here is the winner in 2002 (Hewitt) simply being better than Novak in the SF and F, but 2021 had a slightly deeper draw considering both sides.

As for 2022, it was more or less the same as 2021. However, without the mass early upsets/withdrawals (Hurk, FAA, Berr, Cilic, Zverev, Shapo, the russians) and Nadal/Kyrgios being in the draw and pretty much competing for the title, I reckon 2022 could have been better than 2002/2021 on paper with the same cavaet that 2002 Hewitt displayed a higher level than anyone from 2022 so far by a decent margin.

More like the weakest Wimbledon I didn’t see. I haven’t bothered to wake up early and watch any matches this year. Just watched the last set of a few.

Well he's gonna get a telling off by his TV company for that...

Probably, they're not supposed to talk about weak era. Powerful men have a lot of money invested in tennis. Commentators are contractually forced to always prop up tennis, which is why they keep saying that Nadal and Djokovic are better than ever before etc.
