Four players control their own destiny. Nadal, Tsitsipas (w/ a Cincy win), Zverev (if he plays), and Medvedev can get #1 post-USO with the title. Everyone else will need help. Alcaraz would actually be tied with Nadal in a scenario where he wins the USO over Nadal in the final. However, Nadal would be crowned #1 in that scenario.

They'd be tied in ATP points, but Nadal would have the tiebreaker to become #1 in that particular scenario.

It's amazing how close the YE #1 can be at times; on a few occasions determined by the final of the YEC itself! Novak's been robbed a couple times; esp, in 2016! Carlos really blew it! If he had won Cincy, he would have been the #2 seed at the USO! The worst thing to happen was Coric "zoning" out of nowhere to steal this title! Medvedev really needed this tournament to keep the #1 ranking and now it is "up for grabs!" :(:whistle::rolleyes::cautious:

Nice. But we all know Djokovic would be #1 without politics. Add his 2000 points from Wimbledon and he would be #2, around 100 points behind Medvedev. Knowing he missed 1 slam, 4 Masters and the ATP Cup because of politics. In other words, he had 1 Slam and 4 Masters to win 120 points. Chances he wouldn't be #1 are maybe 0,00000000000000000001 %

And even is we forget about Djokovic, the #1 should be... Zverev. Add potential 750 points from the Olympic Games and he'd be ahead of Medvedev. Now he just missed 2 Masters because of an injury.

To me the rankings don't mean anything this year because of Wimbledon's decision.

Now if I forget about Djokovic and Zverev... yeah, Nadal deserves #1 this year. Neither Tsitsipas, Medvedev or Alcaraz have the level to earn it.

Wow so Nadal is #1 even before he wins a round at the US Open, nice, considering he always goes far at the US Open :happydevil:

I agree that Djokovic got f***ed, but this post is about what is, not what could/should have been.

So on court training becoming legit is helping Tsitsipas a lot it seems.

Ruud looks like he's going to be the most consistent player on the tour, he's got really good attitude and stamina too :happydevil: like Nadal but less talented and less unique game.
Ruud had an outlier French Open result, otherwise he's been a pretty close approximation of Andrey Rublev since 2019 (until he recently fell off). Rublev also got to #5, but never got passed that tricky major QF match.

I have to agree, it is what it is. Yes, Djokovic got badly screwed this year at not one but two slams, plus missing four masters events, so basically locked out of the chance to play for 8000 points this season.

But the show must go on, and yeah, looks like a lot of players can potentially end up as the number one player of the world in the coming weeks.

Tsistsipas and Medvedev have a big chance to end as Number one .

Nadal has to win USO to end as number one considering be isn't good at Paris masters and WTF .
If Nadal doesn't win USO , Medvedev or Tsisipas will be year end No 1 .

If that does happen, then it is first time in Nadal's career that he has won multiple slams and still couldn't be year ending number one.

With Djokovic it happened in 2016 and 2019, with Federer it happened in 2017

I hope people realise how bad for men’s tennis it’d be if Zverev makes no.1. It could be the sports lowest point.
Zverev is a good player when focused, and the last months he was really focused, so your premise is invalid. He won the Olympic Gold in singles beating Novak in the final, pushed Novak to 5 sets in the USO SF and was having one of the best matches of his career vs. Nadal at RG before the injury. You hating the player doesn't make the tour bad.

I'm no fan of on-court training, but if that is all that is needed for those underperfomers to get their sh*t together, it's a price I'm willing to pay.

Absolutely. No harm in this becoming like football. Atleast we will see good tennis. Game will move on from being a puzzle to be solved by one brain to a game of hitting out each other in a match. That's okay I guess. I still feel it has been done to not have a scenario where big 3 sort of reign happens as with tons of experience to tap into, they don't need much coaching to break the other player down in key moments.

ATP has surely done this to make the field level.

Just stating facts.
I'm happy for Medvedev or Nadal or whoever is and will be #1, but I just can't ignore all the political injustices. No point in Wimbledon, no point in the Olympics, covid bans, russian bans,... enough is enough.
Saying the truth hurts the teen Rafa stans.
They would prefer to gloss over that.

This has 2003 vibes, when the #1 fluctuated between 3 players, almost 4, players.

Except 2003 was much better.

2003 AO Agassi >>> 2022 AO Nadal
2003 RG Ferrero > 2022 RG Nadal
2003 Wim fed >> 2022 W djoko

It had 4 legit players contending for #1. All of whom were significantly better than current Med or Nadal or Tpas or Alcaraz.

This year its just least worst among them.

It's close, but I still believe Rafa will finish #1.
By rights, he should since he's won 2 slams. Med and Zedrot will not win the USO. Imagine someone like Zverev finishing YE #1 with no slams and having done nothing the last 12 months? Weakest era ever.

Only the race matters and it is between Nadal, Tsitsipas and Alcaraz, the others have no chance or so it seems.
The Spanish player would have loved the ATP to count the Wimbledon points but he is still the favorite to reach the first place in the ranking at the end of the season.
We'll see if Coric returns the favor to Bull by defeating the Greek.
:D
