I really like Delpo, and have been fortunate enough to watch him win a tournament. He is spectacular. That said, his backhand is beyond weak, unless he is fooling everyone.
If he can beat Thiem and Federer with that backhand ... and people overreact about it way too much. Yes, he is not hitting flashy winners with it but he is placing it in a way that other cant attack him on that side.

del potro could win. he's in da groove. now we see the benefit of a getting 24seed, easy non seed 1/2rds, gets himself going..then..BOOM.

also rafa could be undercooked having played feeble opponents. plus he is abit mentally weak these days. whatever..we will see.

Thiem is exhausted. That wasnt a real long match. Fed didn't look great at all. Fed should have easily won the tie break.

He can ignore it if he wants, seen him do it. But he's very careful about it.

Can't wait, hope we see both Nadal and Delpo play their best.

I agree, and cant wait for a Spanish or Argentinian to hold the trophy and speak in Spanish. That said, theyVe only been asking JDP on court to speak in spanish. As long as Rafa or Delpo wins I am happy.

Nadal in 3 sets, 4 sets max. Sadly my feeling on Del Potro is he destined to be no more than a spoiler the rest of his career, I doubt he will win a big (eg- slam, or even WTF or Olympic) title ever again, I just hope he gets a Masters or two before retiring. That plus Nadal smells blood, looks great his last couple matches, and I think he probably would have beaten Federer anyway, and now with Federer out of the way and the guys that are left he will really go in for the kill.

Also while he did play great tonight, Federer looks a bit under par, and he needed a bigtime choke vs Thiem to survive him, and as others have said that backhand wont hold up against Nadal who is the best at targetting and attacking them.

Noticed that.

Strange that at the USO 2009 they didn't want to let him speak a few words in his language, clowns!

Can we bring in the world's greatest wrist surgeon for an amergency operation to get Delpo's wrists to their 2009 level?

Witch doctor? Pepe Imaz? Anything?

We need Delpo's old wrists back if we want him to SAVE TENNIS!

Mostly Fed fans overrating Nadal's chances in this thread. Delpotro is 5-8 against Nadal!
That's a very impressive record, and with the way he's been crushing his serve and forehand and the amazing crowd support he has, he definitely has a very good chance to beat Nadal come Friday.

I think nadal can smell it but he can't taste it yet. I think he might be nervous so it could be tough but winning the us open after some dissapointments would be the icing on the cake. He wouldn't look back at the dissapointments and just look foward. I thought the guy would never win anything besides RG and now he could win his 3rd us open.

To all who blame Federer's missed opportunities in the 3rd set tiebreaker, remember that Delpo started that set 3-0 and up a break, and could have gotten a second break to go 4-0. Federer could avoid that winning that fourth game.

5/13 are "very good" odds?
Also, at least a couple of those wins were BEFORE THE WRIST PROBLEMS. Delpo's BH used to be infinitely better than it is now.

It doesn't matter that was early in the match. That tiebreaker was brutal lol

nadal also used to be INFINITELY better few years back than he is now. so it evens out
He won the FO in dominant fashion a few months ago.

I don't think he's quite as good as in 2010 or 2013 but he's playing well enough to beat anyone in the field for sure.

Mind says Nadal in 3 / 4
Heart says Nadal in 5

Delpo has shocked me 2 rounds in a row, I'm not expecting a third. Would be cool but tennis isn't a fairy tale.

And no, I wouldn't have picked Fed to beat him either.

having hard time seeing delpo winning this match.

I just don't think his slice bh is going to cut it against nadal lefty fh...

nadal would have to choke this one badly or play an absolute shocker to lose the match.

Well rafaelito can't get comfortable. These are the type of players that have taken him out in the GSs. Big servers.

Whatever happens, it has been a great tournament for del Potro. His best tournament after the olympics for sure.

I just don't get Roger's tactics of continually going to the FH and on top of that missing ridiculously easy put aways on set points. I mean when does Roger miss an overhead? Fcking BS. So frustrating. Yeah, yeah I know he won 2 slams, I'm of course very happy about that, but when you lose, don't lose missing a floater for godsakes.
sounds like you actually agree with me, but don't want to admit it.

Nadal in three easy sets. Rafa will simply play 90% of his shots to the BH and wait for the weak or short reply, then feast on it. I don't see JMDP putting up much resistance and he won't serve as incredibly well as he did against Fed.
Any theory on why Fed repeatedly went to Delpo's FH ? Surely, if it is a universal truth, his team would have filled him in on that ?

No, I don't think he played strangely for just a few points. I don't think he play well at all. You do. I think his whole strategy was not right.
He played like crap, let's just get that out there. He played like the one with much more to lose, which I guess is basically true. I feel like being close to 50/50 rooting interest on the match I can offer a little bit of non 100 percent biased Fed insight. Federer was not very good tonight or in this tournament. Way too many loose service games out of nowhere, pretty pedestrian returning serve all tournament, failure to win many points while facing break point on his own serve, and that 3rd set nightmare tonight. I haven't seen Federer fail to close out so many close pts/ big pts since those 2 losses to Djokovic at the USO with match points.

I don't think anything Del Potro did was all that spectacular. His serve was good but he was often erratic as well and was constantly trying to give that third set away, but Federer wouldn't take it. Then he laid up an easy put-away to get Fed a break pt in the final game of the match and he botched that too. I don't see how anyone in their right mind can say Federer played a great or even good match. Decent. Almost even got away with it if he wins that third set.

Del Potro is going to need to be even better to beat Rafa, because Rafa isn't going to botch the big points like Fed did tonight, inexplicably so. I also don't expect Del Potro to serve as well vs Nadal as he did tonight. I expect it to be very breakable like the Thiem match.

You have to give some credit to Andy, he was on fire those 2 days against Nadal. His backhand was unbelievable. He also served extremelly well.

@Mainad I don't know what you think but for me that was one of the best matches of his career.
I certainly think it is. Such a pity he couldn't keep up the momentum against Fed in the final like Del Potro would do the following year.

Which is why I don't wanna hear excuses about his back. This match was there for the taking and he blew it! That tiebreaker was a horror show! He has had many crushing matches in this tournament after 08.

The saddest thing for me was just seeing those two great guys that I really love watching play like they are some sort of cheap lookalikes trying to recreate that match from 2009. Honestly, this was as poor a match as I've seen any of them play. Had even no suspense for me, because it was also so lackluster and full of errors. Tennis needs new faces, badly.

JMDP was just able to keep a more level head on the biggest points. Most of the time he was patient enough to let Federer shoot himself in the foot. And he did. Often. That first set break of serve was pretty much all on Federer mistakes, just like many of his broken service games all tournament. The third set SP's were self inflicted errors most of the time too.

Nadal isn't going to fall into that trap though, at least I'd be very surprised if he did. Nadal is going to make Delpo come up with the goods time and time again, and I'm not sure he can do that.

It really wasn't what I thought it would be. When one guy was good, the other was crap. Rarely saw their highest levels of the match meet at the same time. Delpo was simply more opportunistic and a tad more clutch. But I mean, DFing to get broken and then DFing to give set point is not going to work against Nadal..it just isn't.

He was beyond fortunate to win that 3rd set after so many mistakes on his end as well.

It wasn't a pretty match. I think del potro has to see this as a once in a life time opportunity to try and win his second grand slam. He has to play better against nadal or it will a straight set routine match. He did beat nadal back in 09 but that's awhile back.

He has a chance, but to win, his serve has to be as good if not better than tonight, and he'll have to go for it a little more on the biggest points. Trying to extract an error out of Nadal is a dangerous game to play.

I just don't see it happening. I'd be very surprised if Nadal let this golden opportunity slip.

Not just the DFing, the whole BH thing is not going to work. The only positive thing for DelPo is that Rafa hasn't really impressed at all. His depth of balls on the FH is hilarious, and DelPo will get some easy target practice. Unlike every other mug from his and the following generation, he can actually come in behind them and finish at the net. However, Rafa's one and only tactic that he has been using for the past decade will cause havoc. Spinny CC FH's all day long - that's basically what all his practice sessions look like :)

DelPo needs to serve big and get to a couple of TB's to have a chance. I'll support him with my Power League prediction - the one redeeming thing from this year's US Open :)

No shame in that, it's natural. I mean I knew Federer was a big favorite in all of his Wimbledon matches, and yet I was scared for all of them, especially in the latter stages. It's just natural. That said, it's really really hard for me to see Rafa letting this slip. Not only do I think he will capture #16, but I think he will do it without much drama, maybe dropping a set or two en route to the victory. I think Juan will make Nadal fans squirm a bit throughout the match but man.. I just don't see it for 3 whole sets. Maybe if he wins the first set and quickly snowballs it, but it's much more likely Nadal is the one doing that.

Delpo is not really one to lay an egg after a great win. He's brilliant at hiding his rally shot backhand, and dictating with that cannon for a forehand. Serving as well as I've ever seen him. He definitely can win this match and stands a good chance IMO.
