Federer needs to dump his coach, work on his footwork, and work out of this slump he's in. He won't ever consistently beat Nadal but djoker is only going to be able to hold this level for a short time... Federer won't get back to #1 but he is definitely the true #3 and can still contend in any tournament he just has no margin of error and he isn't playing at that level right now...

Shoulders slumped from the first points, having lots of UE, playing like crap. I liked a Rafa victory as much as the next fan but this was just sad. I actually felt that Rafa took his foot of the gas for the last bit of the second set or else he could have bageled Fed.

Fed needs to ask himself if he wants to still stay in the game with this attitude. I saw several threads(beside the troll threads) in which they were discussing Fed's game, the age gap and so on, but I think Fed has problems with MOTIVATION.

Where was Fed at his highest motivation wise? In WTF. Why? Everybody was writing him off. He then beat Murray,Djoker and Rafa, and he played his best in the final to avoid the shame of having lost to Rafa in another major venue.

In Miami he had NO FIRE. It was embarrassing to be honest, for a guy of Fed's stature, to not even fight against a rival, and on your wife's birthday. I've seen some craptacular matches from old man Sampras where he got owned but I've rarely seen him give up within the first few games of a match. I would have thought Fed would have come out firing on all cylinders. I doubt anyone would have berated him for losing to Rafa on a slow surface.

But to go out like this. Fed needs to ask himself what he wants out of tennis. Don't listen to the media BS and just try to enjoy tennis. Fed puts too much pressure on himself IMO at times.

It's up to Federer when he retires. If he wants to stay out there until he's having to rely on wildcards, that's up to him. He's earned it.

I've never bought the "tarnishing your legacy" arguments. What Federer has already achieved in his career will not be changed by how long he decides to carry on playing tennis.
 
Come on guys! federer just lost lo number 1 in the world. WTF are you talking about? He still pretty much beats easily everybody not named Nadal or Djokovic. Sure he´s not playing his best tennis ever but remember, HE NEVER PLAYED AGAINST RIVALS AS GOOD AS NOLE OR NADAL FROM 2003 TO 2005-2006. I´ll put it differently: if fed was playing so poorly, he wouldn´t be number 3 in the world and still beating guys such as Stepanek, Roddick, wawrinka... GET REAL

Or else you could just turn your argument around, and say that Federer is no3 playing so badly because outside of Nole and Nadal, it's a weak era? :lol:

But then if that is the case, than are Nole and Nadal really so great if they are playing in such a weak era? You can always make all kinds of arguments for all sides. That is why it is stupid. At the end of the day, how many slams will both of these guys win? In history that is what counts the most, right or wrong.

It will be. What about his H2H against Nadal? It would be terrible for him to get to an embarrasing 30-8 or something like that.

Also his win percentages would go down like hell and he would be remembered as a loser.

Tony and nadal have already said that federer is great at returning fast serves, but that doesn't mean on the faster surfaces fast serves with good location aren't more effective than angle and placement. Every match that roddick enters with federer, the only part of their games where roddick is expected to trump federer is on the serve. That is the primary way he keeps his matches close, so fast serves do work against federer. If they didn't roddick wouldn't even gets sets off federer.

The timeline for nadal's improvement on his serve is wimbledon 2010 imo. That is when nadal consistently brought out the 125 up the middle on the ad side. He added more mphs on other parts of the service box at the 2010 USO.

Since then nadal has met federer twice on slow surfaces and has rarely if at all used that serve. This is certainly true in the miami match. He said he prefers to not hit 2nd serves against federer (djokovic too on the slower surfaces?), so he is going for lower risk 1st serves. The serve is still the premier shot at wimbledon and it was effective against murray at wimbledon, a returner who is on par with federer in the ROS dept. So he will have much higher returns there than at WTF and miami. Nadal is also comfortable hitting the 125 up the middle with good location on the ad side on key points, so imo it's still an open question whether nadal will use the bigger serve against federer on the faster surfaces.

The only time i remember Andy beating Fed was at Dubai long back when Andy was serving in God mode throughout the tournament, and i think Rod won it. In the WO final, iirc, it was his body serves that were getting Fed.

And i hate to say this, but with Fed even weak 1st or 2nd serves often elicit a weak block reply. So Rafa going easy on first serves is quite okay. With others who like to hit winners, perhaps not.

Like I was saying before, the primary reason roddick is competitive with federer is because of his serves, so the big serve is effective vs. federer. The right thought experiment is roddick and karlovic vs. federer, with and without their big serves. At that point karlovic is not getting anywhere near a tiebreak vs. federer. At least roddick is a good athlete and can rally for a while.

I agree with you that nadal's current serving is very effective vs. federer and so he might just stick with it. Will be interesting to see if they meet on grass.

Man how much would I love a FEDAL Wimbledon final, it's been 3 years!
 
Roddick's serve is definitely effective to some degree vs Federer. Except for days Roddick's forehand is firing at 120% (which it has to be to make any dent on Federer) Roddick would be losing most of their matches 6-1, 6-1 without the serve he has for a weapon.

I think we could see it this year. I am not sure if Djokovic is good enough on grass to beat either of them, even in their current states. I am not sure if it will be such a classic again if it happens though, more likely a dud like last years final. I dont think Federer is a good enough player anymore to compete with Nadal on any surface, or with Djokovic on hard courts or clay.

lol at Djokovic not being good enough. Federer is the one that is not good enough. Djokovic is going to have one heck of a year. No Fedal final for sure.

Djokovic has shown nothing yet that indicates he is good enough on grass to tackle Nadal or Federer, probably even in Federer's regressing past his prime state. He has made 2 semifinals of Wimbledon and quit against Nadal in one, and got straight setted by Berdych of all people in the other. He has made 1 other quarterfinal and lost to a 31 year old Haas. He has lost to Safin in his other Wimbledon since being a top player.

And LOL at someone who calls himself Murray fan talking about any other top players not being good enough. Atleast good to see you werent dumb enough to try and talk up Murray's chances at Wimbledon. Watch him crash out 3rd or 4th round to someone like Wawrinka this year.
