PRAISES FROM MEDVEDEV—

The best words for Sinner come from his last opponent: "I watched his training before the match. He hardly misses a shot and hits hard. Often many players who don't miss much, at least don't hit hard. He can hit hard, very strong, he's probably one of the 3-4-5 best hitters on tour, and he doesn't make mistakes. It's difficult to play against him." In 2021, here in Turin, after winning the first set 6-0, he yawned in Sinner's face at the change of court. Now Medvedev crowns the world number 1: "He is perhaps one of the best players I have faced in my career. I faced the big 4 (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, ed.) when they were a little older, and maybe the speed wasn't the same."

Impressive, but Med is a #4 who hasn´t won a title for ages.

With a better serve he should be very dangerous in 2025. He has been actually playing quite well but if you encounter Sinner among others so often...

Twice as many baseline points won by Sinner. Medvedev was blasting that forehand as expected by me but he missed too often and Sinner resists flat cc forehands much better than two years ago. Incredible how efficient his backhand is, from the low camera angle it looked like a lot more spin on Janni's FH and BH. Like the slices, they are now a well used tactical tool against Meddy. Rare to see Jannik with a higher bh slice percentage than his opponent, only against Daniil and possibly Sascha.

See this. Meddy tried to outhit sinner. 126 kmph around 79 mph forehands. He failed but tried a lot of things.

Yes it was quite apparent during the match and I have written that as a rational thinker Daniil would try that. Just 43% of TPW is pretty harsh. Expect a big investment in time, training & tech to get in shape for 2025.

Those are some great stats!

Med was smart to try an aggressive approach. Sinner's movement and precision of shots is so much better than Med's. Daniil's typical Wallvedev approach that works against 95% of the tour will no longer work on Sinner. All year long, once the rally is neutral, Sinner shreds Med to pieces. To be fair, that approach by anybody against Sinner these days gets eaten alive.

Q Daniil, a tough match against a tough opponent. Can you tell us about the match? What was missing today?
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Yes, Jannik plays well.
He is full of confidence right now. I watched his training before the match. He barely misses a shot and hits hard.
Often many players who don't make many mistakes, at least don't hit hard.
He can hit hard, very hard, he is probably in the top three, four, five strongest on the tour, and he doesn't make any mistakes.
It's difficult to play against him. He puts you under pressure. You have to know how to handle it. In some ways I didn't handle it well enough. I missed some shots in important moments.
He won the match. It's basically as simple as that.

Q: You are always very honest. You ended the season with two finals, zero titles: one lost in Indian Wells and one in Australia. On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with your season? DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I would say there are different dimensions: if we talk about the goals that I set for myself and where I got to, well, zero out of ten. How many points do you get for winning the semi-finals? Do you guys know? Anybody?

Q: 400.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: 400. I will probably finish No. 4 in the world unless Taylor makes a big upset, which is awesome. Why do I have to say that? It’s awesome.
In such a demanding sport with so many players, I want to be No. 1 in the world, but I haven’t played well enough this year, by far, to be No. 1 in the world. Jannik is playing much better. He has shown it many times. But I am No. 4 in the big world of tennis. I am super proud of it because, as I said, especially at the end of the year, I struggled throughout the year. Every practice, every match was a struggle for me. Many matches. Before, I felt like I had an advantage over my opponent and I was winning easily.
Now I had to win in three sets, tie-breaks, breaks at the end of the set, etc. I would give it a six and a half out of ten, which means there is a lot of work to do to improve, but there are also a lot of good memories.
Yeah, I am looking forward to the next season.

Q: This is the first year without a title since 2018. The final at the Australian Open, maybe you struggled with those kind of matches. Are you going to change something in your team, maybe in the preparation?
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: In the team, no. But in the preparation, we will definitely try to build something a little bit new. I see now that it is not enough, especially against players like Jannik and Carlos. I am not sure if I will be able to improve, but I will try. I will try to improve in some parts. Again, if we talk purely about tactics, I feel like I played well. It's just the execution. You have to not make mistakes, go, go, dare. I couldn't do that. That's what we'll work on a lot in the preseason, to build a little bit better version of myself, which is not easy when you're 28. About titles… I'm not that worried.
Like I say, every tournament is hard to win, but I could have played different tournaments.
I've basically played three 500s this year and everything else was Masters and Grand Slams. Obviously, I want to win Masters and Grand Slams more than other tournaments.
But maybe I'll go to another tournament and win it.
You never know. In general, I've had some very good performances and some very bad tournaments. For me, that's fine.

Q: Aren't you tired of playing Jannik, or every time you play him it's like a new challenge?
DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I would say both (smiling). I lost in the first round in Bercy, so in a way it doesn't count. The first time I wasn't in his quarter or semi-final, he retired. Not once against me (smiling).
Look, he barely loses this year.
If you want to win a title, you will face him at some point. It is not easy to beat him. Many try. Many fail.
There is mainly one player who succeeds a little more often than the others, and that is Carlos. Yeah, I mean, he is a very, very strong opponent. As I said, a little bit after Saudi Arabia where he surprised me a lot, I didn't know he had an even higher level.
He is maybe one of the best players I have faced. I faced the Big Four when they were a little bit older, and maybe the speed was not the same. So yeah, I will try to work in the pre-season.
Maybe at some point he will lose confidence, start missing some balls. Otherwise, everyone - not just me - has very, very difficult years ahead of us because he is very young.

Q: At the train station there are a lot of posters. The Italians are excited about Sinner. Do you feel sorry for him? Do you feel lucky for him? What do you think about this atmosphere that he is the big name here?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: No, I think it's great. But I wonder what it would be like if he lived in Italy, which he doesn't. It's a little easier that way (smiling). Yeah, I mean, he deserves it. Like everything: contracts, advertising, whatever.

Couldn't log on yesterday, but man, Jannik looks supremely in command. Game flows, as he creates the required nuances
seemingly at will. Among other of his abilities, one of the most impressive is his spatial awareness juxtaposed with the ability to read the opponent and out-fox him. Daniil did as well as he could, but in my mind, the result was written before they both set foot on the court.

It'll be interesting to see how the tourney pans out at the business end of proceedings. I'm not the Pythia, but will hazard a guess and say I'll be surprised if Jannik drops a set to winning the title. An alternate outcome seems far fetched to me........ who knows though, the Pythia may have other ideas.

Meddy ends his season titleless, the only top #10 player not to win one.
Interesting stat. Dude has been a hard worker / been consistently in the top 10 for a while, so surprised to note that he's ended the year titleless. Hoping he'll do better next season to add to the mix.
