In 2012, the year Townsend became the first American winner of the Australian Open juniors in 20 years, the USTA cut funding to the 16-year-old, refusing to pay for her travel until she got into better shape. Garrison said that controversial time worked out well for Townsend.

“I think she couldn’t have asked for a better script,” Garrison said to the New York Times. “It’s made her tougher.”
 
I read this earlier as it involves one of the two girls i'm very interested in going forward, the other being Belinda Bencic. SUPER pleased to see her doing well in her debut Slam main-draw.
 
They cut funding her unless she got fitter because that'd be better for her or because they would be able to sell her out for her looks was she fitter?

Hope the former. Think is the latter unfortunately. Glad it worked out her way.
 
Martina was pretty hefty when she started on tour. If she wants to play a long career, she'll need to go that path.

Probably both, it is a business ultimately.... but I think the success is most important to them. Unfortunately juniors victories mean little in ones pro career potential.
 
I'm rooting for Townsend and Bencic since Wimbledon 2013. The Junior final was inspired.

Yes, many seem to have forgot that, I think Natalie Tauziat could have won something if she ever was in shape, likewise Conchita Martinez, had tremendous potential but never realized it due to lack of work in the gym IMO.... just look how it changed Davenport and Clijsters!
