Have Gruskin or John Parsons or Chris Halioris....done any regional forecasts?
I thought that it would be interesting to summarize the mileage charts from college tennis ranks in a discussion format
of the 16 expected regional hosts, there are 4 sites....that have no teams (with ranks between 17 to 32).....within 400 miles of the sites (also factors in league opponents)
those 4 sites are 4. Virginia ; 9. Columbia ; 10. Arizona ; 12. Miss. State
of the 16 teams ranked between 17 to 32, there are 4 teams.....that would have to travel more than 400 miles to get to any top 16 site (again, league opponents are a huge factor)
those 4 teams are 21. Harvard 22. Michigan State ; 29. Michigan ; 31. Auburn
Let's look at the 16 sites.....and how many teams ...between 17 and 32......are under 400 miles for each site (and are not in same league)
1. Wake Forest - 2 possible travelers.....26. Georgia is 274 miles away....32. Kentucky is 391 miles away
2. TCU - 2 possible travelers ....17 . Texas A&M is 176 miles away.... 25. Oklahoma is 188 miles away
3. Texas - only 18. Baylor.....qualifies ...103 miles away
4. Virginia......no teams meet the 400 mile and league rule
5. Stanford.....has 3 possible travel teams...20. UCLA 356 24. Pepperdine 371 ; 27. Southern Cal 363
6. Ohio State - only 32. Kentucky qualifies ...189 miles away (how many times in the last 10 years have KY and OSU met in a regional?)
7. San Diego - 2 possible travelers 20. UCLA 27. Southern Cal 118
8. NC State - only 26. Georgia ...qualifies ...361 miles away
9. Columbia ...no teams meet the 400 mile and league rule
10. Arizona....no teams meet the 400 mile and league rule
11. Cal.....has 3 possible travel teams......20. UCLA 371 ; 24. Pepperdine 386 ; 27. Southern Cal 375
12. Miss. State....no teams meet the 400 mile and league rule
13. South Carolina - 2 possible travelers.....19 Florida State 388 23 Clemson 131
14. Central Florida ...3 possible travel teams....19 Florida State 273 ; 28. S. florida 100 30. Florida 131
15. Tennessee.....only 23. Clemson qualifies....196
16. Duke......only 26. Georgia qualifies 337
let's look at 17 to 32
17. A&M.... only 2. TCU qualifies
18. Baylor......only 3. Texas qualifies
19. Florida State.....SC and Central Florida are in range
20. UCLA....with the changes in league, they can go to Stanford, San Diego and Cal
21. Harvard......no hosts in range
22. Michigan State...no hosts in range
23. Clemson......SC and Tennessee are in range
24. Pepperdine...can travel to the 2 ACC hosts in range...Stanford and Cal
25. Oklahoma......only TCU qualifies
26. Georgia.....can go to Wake, NC State and Duke
27. Southern Cal has the same options as UCLA...Stanford, San Diego and Cal
28. S. Florida ....Central Florida is only host that qualifies
29. Michigan ....no hosts in range
30. Florida.....Central Florida is only host that qualifies
31. Auburn ....no hosts in range
32. Kentucky....could travel to Wake....or Ohio State
I think that it is terribly wrong....to have a team ranked 17 or 18......travel to a regional with a team ranked 2 or 3.....
but the NCAA has done that many times to Texas A&M and Baylor
all of us........can come up with our best scenario.....this is mine
let's start with the easy 3 west coast hosts ...not named Arizona
in a perfect world...with no travel considerations...and no league affiliations...the regional matchups would come very close to adding to 33...1 vs. 32 ; 16 vs. 17 ; 2 vs. 31 ; 15. vs. 18
that being said......San Diego can't play Pepperdine
#5 Stanford......gets #24 Pepperdine
#7 San Diego gets #27 Southern Cal
#11 Cal gets #20 UCLA
#1 Wake Forest .......I would send #32 Kentucky to Wake
#8 NC State ......I would send #26 Georgia there
#2 TCU .....I would send #25 Oklahoma to that location
#14 Central Florida....I would have them match up with #19 Florida Sate (much faiirer regional matchup than S. FLA or FLA)
Clemson can go to 2 locations......15. Tennessee and 13. South Carolina
I would send Clemson .....to South Carolina...as I think that Tennessee should be hosting....a team ranked between 17 and 20
so....#13 South Carolina...would host #23 Clemson
8 regionals covered.....8 more to go
#3 Texas.......I know that the committee will send #18 Baylor there.....but that is blatantly unfair to Baylor
I have #3 Texas....hosting #31 Auburn (EDIT....just realized that Texas is now in SEC..so they can't host Auburn)....change it to Texas hosting #29 Michigan
I send #18 Baylor to play at Tennessee
so ....#15 Tennessee hosts #18 Baylor
let's look next at #16 Duke....I sent Georgia to NC State....so they have no travel eligible teams
so....#16 Duke ....host #17 Texas A&M
let's look next at #6 Ohio State.....only Kentucky was a possible...I sent Ky to Wake
so.......I will have #6 Ohio State hosting #28 South Florida
that leaves the 4 teams....with no 400 mile partners
I have #4 Virginia...hosting #30 Florida
I have #9 Columbia hosting #29 Michigan.......EDIT.....I corrected and sent Michigan to Texas....now have Columbia hosting #31 Auburn
I have #10 Arizona hosting #22 Michigan State
I have #12 Miss. State hosting #21 Harvard
I will be stunned.......if Baylor is not sent to Texas......
but I really only increased the amount of regional travel(above 400) by 1.....by sending Baylor to Tennessee
Tennessee is going to be a travel to site....if Clemson goes to South Carolina
Duke is going to be a travel to site...if Georgia goes to NC State
it makes sense for Tennessee and Duke to face one of the top 4 non regional hosts....if they don't have a travel eligible team
I know that I could send Kentucky to Ohio State for the umpteenth time....
and that would make Ohio State fall into the under 400 rule
but that would mean....only Georgia.....would be able to go to Wake Forest
that would leave NC State and Duke....as sites with no travel eligible teams
Georgia at NC State.....8 vs. 26.....is a fair matchup for the regionals
