1990 RR Frankfurt Agassi Sampras stats

Not long after their US Open final Agassi got his revenge, and maybe clapped his head "why didn't i play like that". Best serving i ever saw from Agassi; he outaced Sampras:shock: and played excellent overall. Sampras, like he said in his book, was not known as a big fighter early in his career; if things didn't go his way, he could get discouraged. After good first set, he sort of "packed it in" , like he would say.

sampras serve&volley

on every 1st serve except 1
on 4 of 20 second serves = 20%

2 chip&charge tries

I will keep track of these Sampras tactics, it is interesting to see how much he served&volleyed and how much he stayed back. From matches that i have he predominantley stayed back on 2nd serve for the bulk of his career, even on fast indoor court like this one, and on slower hard courts even on 1st serve stayed back some. Only in wimbledon played full serve&volley, on both serves.

Other Sampras - Agassi stats comming soon. I have all their matches except first 2:)

Agassi's serve was a bit different in that tourney than it was either before or after. He was using a relatively low ball toss (he's varied between quite high to almost hitting it at the very peak), a slightly narrower, slightly more open stance than he had been using previous, and overall had a quicker and better rhythm. I was puzzled why he didn't stick with that motion longer. His flat serve was as fast as it ever has been (though it was VERY VERY FLAT), and he was hitting into the low 120mph's....which on that radar was as high as anybody was getting!

That's even better than what he did in the 2001 USO QF (Agassi had 18 aces in 24 service games and 4 tiebreaks).

Remarkable how in this match Agassi had more aces and fewer df's than Sampras.

And he matched Sampras in unreturned serves, something he didn't manage in their 9 Slam meetings.

I guess these include the aces and some service winners?

No, no serwice winners, just aces and other clean winners.

And Agassi serving 8 aces in 5 serving games of the 1st set was just surreal.

That's interesting. I thought Agassi stood closer to the center line when serving to the ad court, sort of signaling big serve doen the t. Sampras was leaning there, and was aced out wide. I always thought that this serving position is better than standing 2 meters from center line, like most do today.
