Looking into the archives, a lot of very strange, bizarre, unlikely, and even tragic things happened throughout 1994 in the sport's world.

- Nancy Kerrigan gets attacked at an arena which was later revealed to be a conspiracy led by her rival Tanya Harding

- Buffalo Bills lost their 4th straight (yes 4th straight) Super Bowl game.....poor Buffalo fans

- Michael Jordan retired at the peak of his NBA career to play minor league baseball (one of the biggest wtf moments in all of sports)

- Ayrton Senna was tragically killed in a crash at the San Marino Grand Prix (such a heartbreaking event )

- NY Rangers broke their 54 year title drought (the longest spell in NHL history...unless the Leafs surpass this in a couple years)

- NBA Finals gets interrupted by OJ Simpson's infamous Bronco car chase on the LA freeway

- The entire OJ Simpson trial was just filled with bizarreness but we couldn’t and still can’t take our eyes off it

- Steffi Graf lost in the first round at Wimbledon....how tf did that happen?!? The last and only other time she lost in the first round at a major was when she was 15 years old

- USA hosted the World Cup....yes the country that calls it soccer hosted the WC and in terms of attendance, it was the largest ever World Cup

- Andres Escobar was tragically killed in his native Colombia after losing at the WC (again, another horrible and gut-wrenching story :()

- Sweden and Bulgaria made the final four....never thought I'd see either of those nations go that deep at the WC

- The World Cup final ended in penalty shootouts with Brazil beating Italy....at the time, that was the first time that had EVER happened

- The MLB season gets abruptly cancelled due to a players strike and for the first time 1904, there was no WS champion

- Not even 2 months later, the NHL went into lockdown over bargaining disputes and just like that, two of North America's big four leagues were on strike

- George Foreman at age 45 won the Heavyweight Championship....yes at 45 years old Foreman became the OLDEST Heavyweight champ beating a then 27-year old Michael Moorer

Although I was a very little kid in 1994, this was probably the strangest sports season in my lifetime.....until 2020 happened of course lol

The saddest event for me was the loss of Vitas Gerulaitis.

Gerulaitis died on September 17, 1994, at the age of 40. While he was visiting a friend's home in Southampton, New York, an improperly installed pool heater caused carbon monoxide gas to seep into the guesthouse where Gerulaitis was sleeping, causing his death by carbon monoxide poisoning.

NHL came back to play a reduced 46-game schedule and SC, unlike their failure to relaunch a decade later.

RIP Vitas.

Also in tennis, Guy Forget entered Wimbledon ranked at 1,130 in the world and reached the quarter-finals.

In football, Deportivo La Coruña should have won the La Liga title, but blew it on the final day of the season and lost out to Barcelona (with Romario, Stoichkov and Michael Laudrup). They were top going into the final day of the season with things in their own hands. In the final minute of their match against Valencia, they were awarded a penalty but sadly Miroslav Djukic missed it and Barca won their 4th title in a row. Thankfully Depor got their title win 6 years later.

The OJ Simpson murder trial was in 1995, though ;)

And then "very defensive" AC Milan marmalized "dream team" Barcelona 4-0 in the Champions League final. AC Milan were full of injuries and suspensions, had only scored 36 goals in 34 games in winning Serie A that season, yet played Barcelona off the park. That Dejan Savicevic goal that made it 3-0 was sensational, beating Miguel Angel Nadal (Rafael Nadal's uncle) before scoring it.

The Milan team was absurd.
