2 handed back hand question

I have a major problem with this side.
I can't seem to hit a clear 2hbh!
Either the I shank it, or put too much spin on the ball causing it to land short, or just blast it out of the court.

Anyways, when hitting a 2 handed backhand, do you keep your right leg (I am a righty)straight? Or bent? I've gotten better results by having my right leg straight instead of bending them.

Hmmm....

I keep both legs slightly bent before contact. But I suspect that's not the real reason for your mishitting the backhand.

Watch this video: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-master-the-double-handed-backhand

It will probably address what's wrong with your stroke. From there, we might be able to get more specific about your issues. Make sure you hit with your arms extended and swing through low to high. Don't let the ball get too close or too low for you.

Shanking the ball, or hitting it short or long has nothing to do with your right leg. Today I posted an article about watching the ball, take a quick look at that and see if any of that is helpful.

The blasting out of the court is either from your swing path being too horizontal, or having your racket face open. The ball falling short with a lot of spin could be an off center hit, your face being too closed, or your swing path being too vertical (not enough drive).

You presented a lot of issues in two sentences, heh.

As far as the right leg specifically, assuming you're hitting from a good position (ball around waist high) I would say beginning the swing with a bent leg, and then using it for lift and transfer into the court and finishing with it straight would be close to ideal.

Yep, good analysis. Shanks are almost always due to mistiming errors and not enough preparation not early enough. Too much topspin causing the ball to land short in the court is simply, as stated ^^, too much spin and not enough drive or a horizontal component in your swing...

Sounds to me like you are not contacting the ball at the right time. If you contacted the ball at the right time, you might hit long or to the net, but rarely would you hit a short spin one shot and then send one up high the next. Remember that the 2 handed backhand isnt contacted out front like a one hander. Your contact is your front foot. If you swing too soon and meet the ball too far out front, you will not meet the ball with a flat racquet face. Either step in to the ball or let the ball come to you, but dont reach for it.

Hope it helps

you need to

1) stand sideways to the net when hitting your backhand, as you hit the ball, transfer your weight violently from your back foot to your front foot.

2)Extend through your arm through the ball.

Two ways of achieving this, (do both)

a)Don't wrap around your shoulder or your body, leave your racquet out in front

b)Pretend you're hitting through 4 balls instead of just one.

Good Luck!

Well, my advice is to envision the ball to go thru the loop. How flat you want to hit the shot depends on how much you extend both your arms. How much you want to impart spin depends on how low you want your racquet to get and 'brush up' the ball , making sure the ball goes thru the loop.

Thanks, I still have lots to learn :D

As for the video, got team practice all week and might rain the weekend, hopefully it won't and I'll get a footage.
