Thanks for you answers people. It is interesting to read what people think on Roddick's odds to accomplish various things. He is definitely at a bit of a crossroads, despite being still ranked a very high #3, often reaching slams semis or finals, and being only 23.

No. Roddick's results on clay have been inconsistent at best. I remember that one year where he came off a great win at a clay tournament (St. Polten?), only to crash out at the first round of the U.S. Open. His game is about power (serve/forehand) and when that power is neutralized by the surface, Roddick just can't handle it on a consistent basis. I give Rod a 10% chance of making past the quarters.

Sure...I'd give him 30% just because of his solid results at Wimby and the U.S. Open (minus last year, folks)

Sure. Roddick's game will still power him into the top 3. He can beat a lot of people with that monster serve and forehand, and since hardcourt season is 1/2 of the year + some grass, his results will propel him into the top 3.

Yes. See above.

Yes. Fed's game is great for all surfaces, especially for grass, but no one can demand perfection from him year after year. Eventually he will falter and Roddick will take advantage.

Yes. Even though it's a slower surface, Roddick is a great hardcourt player.

Hells-yah. Even though Rod crashed out in the first round last year, don't count him out for a lifetime. With some improved returns and more versatility, he can win another 1 or 2.

Yes. Find the right surface and the right serving day for Roddick, and it'll happen.

Yes, but not much higher than 20%. Even with Rod's power game, we see what happens on grass.

Yes. Hewitt is an annoying character, which James Blake can attest to. Plus, with Hewitt's new baby, I can't forsee Hewitt being in the top 5 anymore.

Yes. James Blake did to Nadal what Roddick should do in every meeting...kill your forehand until you're opponent don't know what hit 'em.

No. In the age of Fed and Nadal, I don't forsee Roddick being #1 again. Assuming that Rod win's half of the hard court tourney's he's in, it still doesn't account for all the clay tournaments that Nadal will win, or Fed's grass tournaments. Just look at whose won the Masters series events this year; it's no fluke!

Roddick has a legitimate shot to win a major in 2006 if he gets his act together, I think if he has many more bad defeats he won't ever resurface. He needs to make his move now. 2006 Australian Open would be ideal...Safin already prooved playing ultra-aggresive on decoturf can hurt Fed...

No. Roddick's game would have to change a lot for him to have a shot, and that isn't the game plan to keep changing things up. Simple, his game isn't built for the clay, and it never will be.

Yes. Roddick had a semi appearance at the AO last year and a final appearance at Wimbledon. 3 more wins and there you go, he won 2 slams in a year, and 05 was considered a BAD year for Roddick.

Note: A lot of the questions are in regards to Roddick's entire future. It would be a little rough on him to say that he has bad chances of EVER beating another player and so on. Maybe these questions should have been in regards to next year? Nice thread though.

Since that sounded like a partial question, I will give my answer. Yes I do believe Federer is going to have Roddick's number his entire career(note that does not neccessarily mean never losing to Roddick, since one win would not automaticaly change this).

Roddick's a better player than people give him credit for. He's gone off track a bit - moved away from his strengths- but he's still doing a fine job of winning matches. In the future he'll lose some like the first round at the US Open but he'll still win more than most other players. I don't think you can argue for over 60% success in the head-to-head category but if you'd said 50% then I'd have agreed.

Personally, I think he's got another 2 majors in him. He's still young enough and he's still got two huge weapons in his forehand and serve. In the years to come anything could happen to the opposition (also to Roddick) so, while you can't be certain, you can't discount him. If he happens to find himself in the final of a tournament like the Aus Open playing against someone like Thomas Johansson I don't think he'll choke it away like Safin did. He just needs a bit of luck with the draw and he'll do very well.

Don't see quarters at the French as beyond him, especially if there's a couple of years when the courts play faster than usual. Pat Cash, Pat Rafter and Tim Henman managed to do better than expected so I see no reason why he can't do similar.

He certainly could win 2 majors in a year. I don't think he will but a 20% chance seems fair (again, who knows what will happen to the opposition). If he wins two majors in a year then that should take care of the number 1 ranking. Of course he could make the quarters or better of the Aus, US and Wimbledon. He did it in 2004 and in 2005 he got to the semis of the Aus and the final at Wimbledon so why can't he emulate that this year and add a quarter + showing at the US?

Roddick will probably win a slam or two before he retires, he might beat Federer in a minor event as he did before, and he might advance further in the French than years past, but he won't dominate the slams like Federer has for the past 2 years.

What I meant by having his number his entire career is having his number every match they play. I think that Federer will always have a very lopsided record against Roddick, but he isn't going to win 10 of 10 meetings.
