Safin on clay? Hide ya kids hide ya wife!
Hamburg 02 lol....you just gotta laugh man
LOL @ these guys who didn't even watch/know much of Safin on clay or the Hamburg 2002 final and keep deluding themselves .... not knowing that Safin was actually more than competent on clay & how well Federer played .
When I explain nicely, people like you ignorant about stuff don't even want to consider/check out what I am talking about, come up with BS response and you then whine when I hit back at your BS.

Never said Safin was great on clay, but he was more than competent on it.

and no, I do not under-rate Rome 2006 final performance from Fed. I already said its the 2nd best match that Fed's played while losing (after AO 2005 semi) . Also said its above RG 2011 semi level wise -- I know exactly how good it was.

--------------

Safin made the final of Hamburg 00 (losing in a tight 5-setter to Kuerten) and then Hamburg final again in 2002. He had made the Hamburg final without losing a set (5 matches).
Beat Kuerten and Agassi at RG 1998 in his 1st French Open.
at RG, made QF in 2000 (losing to Norman who'd go on to make the final, having won Rome ....guys like you may only know him as Soderling and Wawrinka's coach, but he was a promising CCer whose prime was cut short by injuries) and SF in 2002 (losing to Ferrero)

Watch the actual match, if you really want to know how well Federer played in that final.

or maybe get some idea with this ( not saying this is some conclusive proof)

"It's been an unbelievable tournament for me," said Federer, who was seeded 11th. "I played some really good tennis today. It was probably the best match of my career."

You need to stop assuming people didn't watch or don't know what you're talking about just because they find your highly fringe and niche opinion ( that always seems to fit a certain agenda) to be comical at this point.

If only fed had converted one of the match points in Rome'06 I would have gone with Rome.

I think comparing matches against different players is tricky, because Fed always had uphill task against Nadal on clay and had no difficulty against anyone else till 2011.

So fed would look unbeatable against Safin, soderling, Djokovic but against Nadal the same play he cannot repeat.

Considering all this, the best performance was Rome'06 vs Nadal

I asked MN nicely if he had actually watched it. I didn't assume.
But keep repeating the same mantra just because it makes you feel better.

you obviously don't have to agree with me, but if you had actually watched the match, you'd know how unbelievably well Fed played in that match.
if you knew enough about Safin on clay, you'd know he was more than competent on clay.

so no, I am not assuming stuff, I'm deriving it from your responses.
When you say Safin ha ha - it means you don't know Safin was more than competent on clay.
When you say Hamburg 02 - ha ha - it means you haven't watched that final.

Obviously putting Rome 06 final ahead of Hamburg 02 is perfectly legit, but to scorn Hamburg 02 final shows you haven't watched it.
To give an analogy, its like someone laughing at a guy saying Djokovic's performance vs Ferrer in AO 13 semi was his best performance at the AO. Obviously you can disagree with it, but there's no doubt Djokovic played unbelievably well in that match. The reason (most probable one atleast) one would laugh at it is that he/she hasn't seen that match.

oh and finally - agenda ? what agenda ?

what was this then ?
"Safin on clay? Hide ya kids hide ya wife! "

If you don't have to time to read all that, then don't bother with posting gifs or comments without even watching the match in question (Hamburg 2002) or hell even knowing about the player's capabilities on the surface.

Again, Safin was nowhere near great on clay, but he was more than competent.

oh and @125downthemiddle :

02 Hamburg F, 02 Davis Cup against Safin and Kafelnikov, 04 Hamburg SF/F, 05 Hamburg QF, 06 Rome F, 06 FO 4R, 07 Hamburg F, 09 FO F, 11 FO semi are the ones that immediately come to mind.
From InsideOut900, a Djokovic fan.

For whatever reason, I think the Hamburg 2002 Final was Federer's best match overall.
People don't give that match enough credit because it was young Fed(so he couldn't have been as prime Fed) and the opponent wasn't as high profile as prime Nadal.

And those 6-1 6-1 sets in the Davis Cup, also against Safin have some of the most ridiculous highlights. Never seen anyone hit winners at such a high rate and with so much ease.
Rome 06 final, RG 09 F and RG 11 semi are way too predictable choices.
it obviously isn't a popular/predictable choice, doesn't mean it isn't reasonable.
