Now that all four Grand Slam events of 2025 have concluded, I believe we can reasonably compare the level competition on the Tour of this year to that of 2006.
In 2006, Federer was obviously by far the most successful player at the Slams, winning 3 GS titles + 1 F.
In 2025, Sinner was marginally the most successful player at the Slams, winning 2 GS titles + 2 F.
(Even though Alcaraz is currently World #1, he had worse results at the Slams: 2 GS titles + 1 F + 1 QF)
At AO 2006, the finalists were Federer and Baghdatis, whereas at AO 2025, the finalists were Sinner and Zverev. Sinner undoubtedly played better at the AO this year than Federer did in 2006, but at the same time, Baghdatis in 2006 played much better than Zverev did this year.
At RG 2006, the finalists were Federer and Nadal, whereas at RG 2025, the finalists were Sinner and Alcaraz. 2025 Sinner at RG >> 2006 Federer at RG, but 2006 Nadal at RG > 2025 Alcaraz at RG.
At Wimbledon 2006, the finalists were Federer and Nadal, whereas at Wimbledon 2025, the finalists were Sinner and Alcaraz. 2006 Federer at Wimbledon ≥ 2025 Sinner at Wimbledon, but 2025 Alcaraz at Wimbledon >> 2006 Nadal at Wimbledon.
At USO 2025, the finalists were Federer and Roddick, whereas at USO 2025, the finalists were Sinner and Alcaraz. 2025 Alcaraz at USO ≥ 2006 Federer at USO, but 2025 Sinner at USO >> 2006 Roddick at USO.
But overall, I would give the edge to the 2025 season.

3. top5 in 2006 (when fed had his points record, 16950 in 2016 system): fed, rafa, denko, blake, ljubo

2. top5 in 2025 (raz has 12050 points): raz, sinner, zver, nole, FAA

1. top5 after RG16 (when nole had his and overall points record 16950 points = 17110 in new system): no1e, muzza, fed, rafa, wawa

W15-RG16 >>> 2025 >> 2006

I mean in 2006 you had 9 grand slam champs(former present and future) and about 10 other legends in the top 30
2025 you had 4 grand slam champs
And 3/4 are likely to be legends
The rest…. Not so much.
2006>2025 by a million miles.

Peak-Nadal in 2015? The only season he didnt even win a masters title on clay, losing his only match to Wawrinka. Using Nadals 2015 form to project 2006 results is very relevant indeed.
They also met some times when Djokovic was not peak, 2006, 2007 and 2008 for example.

It's not like Djokovic was always peak in their 10 meetings while Nadal wasn't.

I agree Nole would have had the biggest chance to beat him, i still think Nadal had to be off for Nole to beat him, like 2015 (worst season ever) and 2021, were he was severly troubled with injuries. Its not like we are using 2017/2018 as a proxy for Nole at Australian Open? Its kind of the same.

CYGS would be way harder in 2006 because of Rafa.

In 2021 Nadal was in top form: he had won Rome and Barcelona, in Madrid lost to the eventual winner Zverev and in MonteCarlo lost to the eventual finalist Rublev, and at French Open had dropped only 1 set before the semis and bagelled Schwartzmann, Sinner and Gasquet.

I dont think so, he was severly injury troubled. Got to ask the question why he pulled out for most of the season after FO? He played like 30% of the season?

So he got injured during the match with Djokovic? Weird that an injured player can play for 4 hours and 11 minutes.

Djokovic called it his best match ever at RG. Very strange that he would call his best match a match against an injured opponents.

Nadal was in top form at '21 RG SF, until he was broken twice to get down, and couldn't brake back in the 4th set.

Nadal claimed he wasn't competitive late on HC against Djokovic because his body wouldn't respond. Then how come his body responded well against Medvedev in '22 AO?

And how come he made it to the finals of '19 AO when his body didn't respond well?

Heh, Djokovic wouldn't make statement like that, which tends to diminish the victor. Even if such a statement is true.

They can play with injuries, same with Federer and Djokovic at W16. When players pull out of the tour for a long after a match its usually for a reason.

Do you like the 2021 french open semifinal?

No mention of the injury in the post match conference. He might have injured after the match. Players get injured in pratice all the time.

Djokovic is responsible for Rafa's 2 biggest losses at French Open and 3 of Federer's 4 biggest losses at Wimbledon, but they always belittle Novak's wins.

Federer was carrying 06’ hard let’s be honest. He probably ≥ Sincaraz today yet, bar clay. But 06’ Nadal < both of them aside clay too (not far ahead either). As poor as Z, Oldovic and FAA are as top 5, they clear 2006 imo.

Overall it’s 2025 ahead. Which speaks about how we lose context by calling this “weak era”. Not the weakest at all.

Players arent a1sholes, they dont want to take anything from the other player. Same with Nole and Federer at W16. You could actually see Roger was injured (vs Raonic). Roger never retired during a match, ofc it doesnt mean he never was injured.

Didnt Rafa say he ended 2021 early because the foot had troubled him for a year?

Alkinner fanbois are no different from Djokodal fanbois indeed, in that they will twist themselves to believe anything that suits their agenda. The mugs we have for top players below Sinraz now can't clear their asses, even if 2006 was a lean year that's a lolworthy statement. To say nothing of not recognising Federer + Nadal on clay as clearly superior to either by some distance.

Is it true that you don't know if he was injured during the match, and he could have injured during training?

The foot had been a problem for more than a year. He skipped parts of late 2020 season, he skipped IW/M 2021. He pulled put of W and only played 2 matches post FO. Ofc we cannot no for sure, but i doubt he was 100%

Right now, 2006 leads 2025 11-9. So it’s a close poll. I can’t ever complain about a close poll. Kudos to the OP there.

On hard courts, we’ve got Sinner vs Fed at the AO and Carlitos vs one of the best versions of Fed at the USO. I think that this ends up as a split. Sinner and Alcaraz were quite amazing on hard courts this year. But they aren’t sweeping Fed. So for now, it’s 1-1.

Let’s take a look at the natural surfaces.

FO: Nadal was right smack in the middle of winning 81 straight matches on clay. Many of those wins were against the peakiest version of Fed. There’s no way anybody is beating this version of Nadal. This event is locked down more than any of the others.

WI: Federer was right smack in the middle of winning 65 straight matches on grass. And at Wimbledon, he was arguably at this best(i prefer his 2005 title, but 2006 is right there). Federer broke bomb servers Mahut and Ancic with ease. He only dropped 1 set that tourney. As good as Sinner was here, he’s not touching this version of Fed on grass courts.

Fedal beats Sinneraz 3-1.

Nadal skipping tournaments outside clay and then peaking in the clay season has happened regularly during all his career.

'06 had Federer on the non-clay slams and Nadal on RG. It'd two more years before Nadal successfully challenged Federer at Wimbledon.

'25 had a more distributed slam profile.

AO: Sinner. Alcaraz has yet to finish QF.
RG: Alcaraz had to go five sets to subdue the last two years.
WB: Alcaraz 2, Sinner 1
US: Alcaraz 2, Sinner 1. Sinner has yet to defeat Alcaraz.

Winner so far: Alcaraz

A guy like Fritz, someone who was called unworthy to be top 10 got comparable career numbers, if not better than other guys on that 06’ top 5 like Blake. Now, Sascha clears Taylor himself, and so does Oldovic even if we take his stats since 2024 only.

I get the narrative, I know Nole still kicking is not a got symptom. I’m not trying to make 2025 the absolute best era whatsoever, far from that. But to call it the worst just because Big 3 is no longer there is a stretch too. It’s overreactive

Top 2 are “fairly decent” (something you didn’t even have during 2001-03 tbh) and so is the whole field, or top 100 if you wanna call it.

PD: RG2025 > Rome2006 > Rome2025 imho

Career stats don't work for this and never did. A bum who goes by career stats might as well say AO 09 was a historically mug win since Nadal struggled with low-achievement Verdasco so much suggesting a lacking level (Federer's level must also then be lacking since he couldn't even beat a Nadal that weak, roflmao). But thankfully, we've got footage that allows sensible observers to see how good of a match that semifinal really was (and the final impressive too minus last set). Likewise, match footage makes it clear which season here had the better top tennis and it's not 2025, by a long shot.

You’re missing it. An “average” top player can still create a classic out of an overperformance. It’s just that ATGs make them more often because they peak higher and for longer. I rate Verdasco highly and that game particularly, trust me I’m Spaniard. You got Zverev in RG22 too (not on the same level but just to get the point).

That being said he can’t replicate it that much because he’d have better career numbers including probably some GS, which is not the case. That’s how stats work. They may seem incomplete but they tell quite a lot.

About very peak level, I rate some points during last sets of RG13 SFs as the highest level of tennis ever seen on clay, personally. This and this are top-notch winners, absolute bangers. But there’s also some Djoko-smashs in the middle of these games (not to say the whole game, or the first 3 sets where they didn’t really match each other), while Sincaraz level was more steady with lower errors in crucial points.

About footage: unless it’s the whole game or very long highlights I’d rather stick to @Waspsting posts. And of course, my personal opinion. Just gonna remind you eye test is a reason some people value today’s tennis more highly. If there’s something Sincaraz got that’s pace, both legs speed and hitting power.

Zverev RG 22 was like Medvedev AO 22, super mug level compared to normal slam winners that was only in contention against Nadal because Nadal was super duper declined (and the RG semi was also played in shyt conditions that made him worse), only the field still couldn't take him. Alright, that's kind of an exaggeration on its own but ultimately I just don't rate them, given also that they have demonstrated consistent patterns of underperforming if their opponent can get anything going (which the Oldal vs Med/Zed '22 matches are strong examples of).

Fritz is more consistent than Blake, but at his best I think Blake could hit shots Fritz doesn't, due to superior movement I guess. Not that Blake is really a credible top slam opponent but neither is Fritz.

Sinraz lower errors? I don't have a clear memory of that. Also individual shot quality/shape/intensity matters. The '25 RG final was certainly a historically respectable slam final but I am rather skeptical of them competing with prime Nadal like that. Like, Nadal probably doesn't run roughshod over them, yes, but I doubt they could compete better than Fedovic at best, and with that in mind I'm always going to side with big 3 in these comparisons given what they showed over the decades, unless Sinner/Alcaraz demonstrate clearly better level, which certainly hasn't been the case so far.

People can have whatever opinions of course, but if you give yours, I can give mine too. Tennis is hard to capture; for instance, I get the impression that all of the big 3 (Nadal in particular, but Federer and Djokovic as well) were meaningfully better at hitting groundstrokes on the run than Sinraz, which would be a significant asset in quality comparisons, but there are no stats compiled for that, it's only memories / eye test.

2006, because it was impossible to win RG.
Like this match shows. Watch it all, guys, if you can. It's Rafael Nadal's longest ever French Open match in terms of match time. This isn't the best form of Nadal by any means, but it certainly shows how he digs in for the long haul. Nadal had won 55 matches in a row on clay going into this match against Paul-Henri Mathieu, in the third round of the 2006 French Open. It was on Nadal's 20th birthday, i.e. 3 June 2006. Mathieu in this match played several levels above his usual level:

Weird that some people claim 19 years old Nadal was peak on clay because he won 80 matches in a row, but 35 years old Big3s losing zero Slam matches to the field can't be peak because of age.

Looks like a double standard to me. Age matters to prove that Federer was old but doesn't matter to prove that Nadal was baby....

For people that started watching tennis in 2011, this is too much to grasp ;) . Peak Rafa was 2015, because it suits them the most.

Check my last comment. I was thinking about you.

Why 35 years old Federer can't be peak because of age while 19yo Nadal can be peak regardless of age?

Nadal at age 19 could move phenomenally well. He couldn't at 36, compared to his earlier years. Against Mathieu in 2006, you knew that Nadal could stay out there all day long (even Wilander mentioned it on commentary, when Mathieu was leading at 7-5, 1-1 after 2 hours of play!), whereas in 2022 against Zverev in a similar style of match there was always a bit of a doubt about whether Nadal's body could last at the age of 36 if the match went something like 5-7 hours. Remember that Nadal vs. Zverev in 2022 was at 7-6, 6-6 (0-0 in tiebreak) after just over 3 hours of play when Zverev went over on his ankle.

Peak Nadal on clay was the 2008 French Open. Here's a video of that:

This is another thing. This eye test.

What I'm talking about is that some people claim that players can't peak at a certain age just because most players don't peak at that age. But that should be valid for 19yo Nadal too. Most players don't peak at 19 therefore Nadal was not peak at 19.

Nadal's peak movement and mobility was before late 2005, before he was diagnosed with Mueller-Weiss syndrome in his foot. Most people who are diagnosed with that are females aged 40-60, not teenage males.

I started watching tennis in 2005. I have a lot of magazines at home of the years 2007-09.

One of the first matches I saw live was Nadal-Hanescu at Rome in 2005

At the time, the year-end top 10 of 2006 was criticized as weaker compared the year-end top 10 of 2005.

In 2025, who beyond Alcaraz and Sinner really grabs attention?

2006 quite easily.

2006 Nalbandian was getting some of his best results and is easily more talented than anyone outside of Sinnercraz today.

2006 Denko ran into Fedr twice at slams and an in form Nalbandian. Denko is a better ball striker than anyone on tour today.

2006 Blake and Ljubicic had their best years.

Young 2006 Djoko post RG would be a top 10 minimum type player today.

Young 2006 Sir Murray post RG would be a top 10-15 player minimum today.

Young 2006 Berdych RG onwards is a top 10 player today.

I trust 2006 Roddick more than any player outside of Sinnercraz and maybe old Djoko today.

2006 RG was impossible for anyone to win.

2006 Ferrer was showing signs of being the ultimate gatekeeper

2006 has the negative record of being the only year with 3 year end top5 who have never reached a Slam final in their whole career (Davydenko, Blake, Ljubicic).

Incredible year.

We know how dangerous Davydenko and Blake are in particular, and Ljubicic was having the best run of his career from late 2005 to mid 2006.
