2008 Wimbledon Gentlemen's Singles Draw

Hrbaty's last win over Federer was not in 2002, but in 2004 (ATP site): Cincinnati, 1-6 7-6(7) 6-4. The first-one was in 2000 Paris Indoor, 4-6 6-2 6-2. Early this year when Hrbaty started his come-back, I heard he beat Federer in practice... and Federer takes practices seriously. Hrbaty's ground-strokes are the real deal! His serves are weaker now (-10/15mph), however slice serves, if Hrbaty manages to make them, could be effective even in slower speeds.

yes I saw that you're right 2004 is still a whole different than today-and Hrbaty unfortunately a LOT weaker player.I think the only thing this match has to offer is Federer improving his H2H before Dominik retires.

Ancic is not Ancic of old(and the Ancic of old got one of the biggest beatdowns by fed),same for berdych - he cant hurt Fed(his year wasnt stellar to say the least).
Nishikori is a nice kid,but in a best of 5 against Fed on Wimbledon center court...
I agree, it's cruise control for Fed until Djoko, if Djoko has a slip, it will be cruise control to the final like last year!

berdych is one of those guys that has the talent to beat anybody in the world any given day, ancic your right, and nishikori is a tough third round and not to be overlooked, but yes in the end federer will win even if it is tough
You're delirious about Berdych, weakest mental I have ever seen!

This draw seems a lot more balanced than the previous Wimbledons. Both Federer and Nadal have potentially strong 2nd round opponents (Nishikori, Gulbis, respectively). But I'm glad to see Djoker on Federer's side. It's time he gets a chance to thrash Djoker before Nadal does!!

ok smarta$$, then please explain what would be a tough draw for Federer on grass. Remember, the guy is (still) nr. 1 in the world and has a 59 match winning streak (and counting) on grass.

I'm waiting... 8)
Karlovic (in 1st round), Gulbis, Murray, Djoko + people like Gasquet, Youzhny, Nalbandian, Roddick and of course Nadal in the final. Here it is, my idea of a tough draw on grass! I would add Baghdatis but this year he's still recovering from a long absence.

This is not possible 2 seeds to meet in the first round OR the second. So even if Gulbis was first round second couldn't possibly be Karlovic,or Murray or Djoko or anyonelse you mentioned.

Fed's path to the trophy is no mean ****. If he wins this one it is going to legitimate him as the all-time grass great. I'd say Hrbaty, Soderling, Monfils, Hewitt, Kohlschreiber (Berdych is not looking very good as of lately), Djokovic, Nadal.

Those who complained about wanting Roddick as #4 instead of Davy, you got your wish. They are in the same quarter, so it is exactly the same as being seeded #4, since he avoids the top 3 until SF.
Monfils is a joke, Hewitt is over the hill and Kohl is not that tough. Hrbaty...who? I agree with the others you mentioned.

Looks like Nadal gets a free pass into the final again. It will only be a tough if he makes it hard work for himself.
I have no idea what makes you say that: Youzhny is really tough especially for Nadal, Gulbis is playing very well and will be tricky, Murray and Roddick are in no way easy opponents on grass (Murray has played some fantastic matches at Wimbledon in the past and the crowd will try to weigh in of course). So although I'm not complaining about his draw, it's no piece of cake. He's had extremely tough matches against both Youzhny and Murray on fast surfaces in the past. I hope he will prevail in the end but I'm sure it won't be easy.

Are fans of all players unanimous that this seems to be a balanced and fair draw? No blaming the draw, whoever wins or loses? No conspiracy theories?

This is going to be a good Wimbledon; I can feel it. Can't wait for it to begin. :)

Youzhny hasnt had game since early last year. He sucks.
Gulbis is a true challenge.
Murray is a mental case and his game has been topsy turvy since his wrist injury.
Roddick's backhand sucks so bad that Nadal just demorlizes him by hitting to it. Not to mention Roddicks movement is really terrible. So Nadal gets the serve back and its a cake walk.

I was watching t.v. yesterday and Mike Myers said that malakas means masturbation in Greek. Is that true?

It looks like Nadal got a really tough draw with Gulbis and Youzhny in the 2nd and 4th rounds, respectively. Luckily, Djokovic is on Federer's half and that match could be interesting if it happens.

I think Fed has a tough draw this year at Wimbledon but then he had his share of easy ones as well(as any player did) so I'm not complaining, that's the hand he was dealt and I hope he wins.On the other hand if by some case Djokovic happened to be on Nadal half at Wimbledon this year some Nadal fans would have bored you to death with conspiracy teories, however since that isn't the case I hope that they'll keep their whinning to a minimum so we can all just enjoy Wimbledon this year.

Yes but he's nowhere near as consistent or accomplished as Karlovic is, he doesn't really have a return game, and once Nadal starts getting those serves back it'll be all over for him.
On a side note, Karlovic doesn't really have a return game either!

I am really afraid that J Isner will upset Nadal in the 2nd round. what a terrible draw Nadal received. what does those All england club officials have against Nadal ??

Well I sure hope you're right, I can't wait to see him lift that golden trophy!!

Youzhny is an extremely bad matchup and tough opponent for Nadal. He might choke the match away but he would still be able to put up a good fight. If Youzhny was in a winning position and chokes it away it would be considered a tough match for Nadal for the fact that his opponent was even in a winning position.

If you know your opponent will choke no matter what there really isn't anything to be worried about, just keep playing and eventually they will fall apart.

That about sums up Nadal's draw. His toughest challenge will probably be Gulbis,if he gets through him he'll cruise to the finals.

eerr I am not scared of him..I am scared for him!;) lol not everyone here is a Fed/Nadal/Djokovic/Roddick fan.:)

Absolutely. I am a practicing Baghdatist and I want Marko to do well at Wimbledon again. This is difficult with the poor play, the ranking dropping...and having to face Roger on grass.

Youzhny played Nadal at USO and I distinctly remember him NOT choking. On the other hand, he could bash his skull again and that would be scary

That was hard courts and the Wimbledon choke was after the USO match. I hope you're right and I'd love to be wrong but don't see it happening.

Nadal can be upset with anyone. He barely survived last year.I like Roger's draw even with those big names.Nadal got another easy draw, what a surprise!!!

Yes,all the people here whining about his no.10 seeding don't realise that it is there for a very good season. He can really play on grass, and with a little luck if he can get past Dr.Ivo with his current form Nalbandian will not be a big threat and then it's time for revenge!

Though more the better to stay under the radar,if they underestimate him. ; )

Baggy Wimby champ 2008!!! )

I'm curious, do you know what the personal problem was that kept him off the tour earlier this year?

I really MISS Nicolas Escude. He had the best Serve and volley tennis game in modern era. He was one of those players that was just PURE FUN to watch.

yes,a close family member had a health problem and he took the time off to spend as much time with him/her but I haven't heard anything new,so I guess she/he is better now...

Not too many tour guys, with as short as the career-span of a pro athlete can be, would take time off for a family member's illness.

This guy Baghdatis is special.

I hope he gets the fitness and the fire back!
Pame Marko!
