The ATP nominates 5 or 6 players and then the players vote.
If the ATP doesn't nominate Blake, the players can't vote for him.

that's true. However ATP will propose the players most likely to be voted and win this.

And something tells me they had proposed Rafa as well.

why??? do you think atp doesn't think Rafa is even eligible for sportman behaviour??

I wish there was some way of finding out this for sure.

I don't know about this year, but he wasn't nominated in the previous years.
I don't see why this year would be different.

2009 nominees:

Roger Federer
Ivan Ljubicic
Carlos Moya
Jarkko Nieminen

LOL I know that.I obviously want Blake to be nominated and then to get the award

No one in their right minds would vote Nadal for sportsmanship award. The fist pumps, the timewasting, the yelling and mind-games. Then again, I wouldn't have voted for Federer but I guess they know him best. Ljubicic would've got my vote in '09, very classy player

I think that ALL players get to vote.
Interesting that about 2009.Apparently Nadal wasn't even proposed which means that he's not that popular in the lockerooms and/or his antics are as frustrating or even more-that we watch in tv.

I think not.
I don't think he's that popular in the lockerooms and if all players would get to vote, he probably wouldn't win it.
But this has nothing to do with the fact that he wasn't nominated.
I think Federer has a good image and the ATP wants to keep it this way.

Stupid fixed awards. Just like the Oscars, Emmys, People's Choice, and every other award known to man.

Del Potro should have received most improved. Isner? Umph!

So what you are saying, Nadal would have won if the awards were not fixed?
Just kidding.

Congrats to Fed.

Nope. Saying I could care less about beauty pageants, awards, contests (American Idol) as I think it's impossible to know who was polled, how many respondents, who was contacted. It's just a silly, ego thing. Some people care about them. Some people don't. But don't you think del Potro would have been a better choice than Isner? I just don't see how Isner stood out that much in 2009, do you?

You people do realize Isner was ranked 144 at the end of 2008, right? And he ended 2009 at 34, a difference of 110 places.. that sounds like pretty significant improvement to me, especially considering he won his first title earlier this year. Although I think Soderling also probably deserved this award as well.

I agree. After his clothing stunt at Wimbledon, the S* and F* bombs in the USOpen Final and the racquet breaking in Miami, I don't see how Fed deserves the sportsmanship award. But I guess maybe there was no else more worthy? I think Roddick, blake etc are good candidates.

And the most improved player has to be JMDP. Go from a double bagel (in AO) to thrashing the putative GOAT in a slam final (while being behind for the entire match). How much better can it get?

Shanghai the most popluar Masters 1000? Hmm.

I must be missing something because it was probably my least favourite.

Does the player of the year award ever go to someone else than the one that finished the year as no. 1?

Improvement is up for debate. Self-centered americans choose Isner, which is ridiculous compared to Soderling or Del Potro or Verdasco.

Yep. Several times, in fact. Bjorn Borg won like five straight although he only finished as the year end #1 player twice.. however, the most recent case was Becker's being named ATP player of the year over Lendl in 1989.

WIN! HAHAH.

Best sportsmanship should go to Serena.

Speaking of awards, contests? there's a funny one over on www.zimbio.com. You get 20 pairs of people and you have to click on who you think is more popular. Federer is on one so a lot of you should have fun with that. I guessed 15/20.

If you mess up though, you don't get the same people, but it was really fun.

I should've put across my post in a better way.I don't think the guy dosen't fit into the role of a great sportsman. He does.Just that there's some other guys I feel who could've gotten it atleast once.

Federer not only a goat in tennis, but also a goat in winning awards. Even Rafa did so much in 2008 still couldn't win the Fans' Favourite Award.

And why was that? Did he win more Slams or something? I really don't see many reasons.

Once the fan's favourite, you don't lose it very quickly I think.. I think Federer will be fans favourite until he retires.

When you win and became the best player in any sport, you attract fans. I’m sure Rafa attracts more fans in 2008, but still lagged behind Federer.
