2009 USTA Year-End Ratings Move Predictions

Well I finally got the bump up that I have been working so hard to get. I was pretty confident this was going to be the season I was bumped. Then they lowered the bar. While I am pleased I am going up, I now wonder if I really "earned" it, or if I was caught up in the "bump everyone up" frenzy.
I always thought I would feel so excited when this day came, but I don't. I wish there was some way of finding out where you actually were in the rating system.

I predicted I would remain at 4.5 and I did.

We had a lot of movement up in our area. At levels below 4.5, I'd guess that about 1/2 to 2/3 of the players who advanced to Districts and beyond got bumped up. Most of the 4.5 & 5.0 players who played post season remained at their levels.

Aw, come on. Don't feel that way.

I was working trying to make it to 4.0 and I didn't. That means your bump does in fact mean something. Congratulations!

Don't get me wrong, overall I am pleased. Although, I just went from being the big fish in the little pond, to just another minnow trying not to get my tailed chewed off. I'm going to miss all those phone calls of people begging me to be on their teams! Now I have to be the one calling and begging to get on a team! :)

I just can't help feeling that everyone who got bumped up this season has that little "*" next to their name.

That's it - you're done... Nothing you do in December would now impact the 2009 year-end rating.... of course it could impact 2010.

UGH...I got bumped from 3.0B to 4.0B!!
I am a 3.0B but have been playing 3.0 and 3.5 this year (all doubles). I am 5-0 at 3.0 and 7-1 at 3.5. I understand that I can't be DQ'd but when planning for the rest of the year, Mixed and Combo, can I assume that I will be rated 3.0 all year? Or can I still be bumped mid-year?
7-1 at 3.5 would suggest you belong at 4.0.

So you mean i could go and lose to 4.0 guy, 6-1 6-1 and it wouldn't affect it ???
Once your rating is established, it's locked in. That is not to say that subsequent play doesn't affect it as it is a Dynamic Rating. But, losing one match will not move your rating from 4.5 to 4.0. As an exercise, there was a team who tried that. They lost every match never winning more than two games a set. None were bumped down.

It seems like the tweak was really drastic with the men, but I don't know if there was much change with the women.
It seems like more women than men were bumped here. Eight women on my 4.0 team were bumped to 4.5, but I don't know of any men's teams here that were hit that hard. It averages out, probably.

I was lucky and played with good partners. :)

And yes, I'm whining but I really wanted to play a couple years at 3.5. I think without the "adjustments" I would have. The good news is that in our area it seems that next year, 4.0 will be the same as this year's 3.5.

Ah, but it takes two to tango!

If you made it to post season play at 3.5 and did well, then why waste time there? And, as you said, you'll see a lot of those same players at 4.0.

Plenty of players got bumped as the USTA bumped over 90,000 of 300,0000 players. They are trying to weed out sandbaggers but they have also bumped plenty of players who should not have been.

I was right

Sent a letter to the local coordinator last fall about fact that I'd know I'd get screwed on my year-end rating and wouldn't get bumped up. At time, didn't know about the big bump-up. USTA moved up a lot more people than they usually do, but I got left behind...makes my not getting bumped up even more pronounced. This sux.

Banana - as I noted in the other thread where you commented on this... the only matches that you played which counted toward your rating were the adult league matches at 3.5. You acknowledged a .500 record at that level and that you lost to the better players that you faced.

You may have gotten better subsequent to that, but the computer only looks at your adult league record - so the system has no way to know you've improved.

You can complain to coordinators or here, but your record didn't support a bump.

Thanks....

Kyle,
Thanks for your comments...appreciate them. Yes, I did comment about the 0.500 record I had for the 4 matches last year; however, as you should know by personal experience and by reading others' postings on here, rating is not solely based on the .500 record. Apparently, a further delving into the opponents' records at the time I played them are warranted.

Since I have been practicing more this year and hope to romp in my league, I hope to get some good scores in my 3.5(m)/7.0(xd) leagues. Hopefully, I can get a captain to kindly condescend and allow me to play in a 4.0(m)/8.0(xd) leagues to be able to compete there. Goal is to eventually send an email to my worthless local league coordinator and cast it up to her how I finally got my rating increase despite having to play in the new "3.5 lite" league, which does not reflect my level of play.

In reading a lot of the posts that people have posted from other regions, I'm now convinced even moreso this year (as I've had this thought for the last couple of years), that the ratings in general in my area are lower than the ratings in other areas for the same level of play. Meaning, if I kept my same level of play, there's no doubt I'd have gotten the higher rating elsewhere (which is some logic that I'm sure people like you will attack). Just seems as though there are disproportionately so many more 4.0s, 4.5s, 5.0s+ that are posting here from other areas than from this area. Also, given the written definition of the NTRP ratings as posted on the USTA website, I'd CLEARLY be at least a 4.5, yet I can't even get a 4.0.

I appreciate your "permission" to allow me to rant/rave on here.

Banana, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you are. I know that I'm as 'good' (relaively speaking) as the players I'm familiar with who have been bumped to 4.0 at the end of last year. But... USTA ratings algorithm doesn't know how 'good' I am or you are. It only knows the match results. And it does take into account whom you played and the score of the matches (something you've alluded to). The algorithm may not be perfect but it is objective: it treats you and I the same as anybody else.

As for the NTRP guidelines: these definitions are, should I say, 'elastic'? Here is an example: "This player has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured. This player can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys, overhead smashes, and has good depth and spin on most second serves. Strong shots with control, depth, and spin; uses forehand to set up offensive situations; has developed good touch; consistent on passing shots". Why, that's me! Or is it? The above describes 5.0-level payer.

Guidelines don't mean ANYTHING. Match results against players of similar ability are the only indication of your level of play. You know it.

And finally: your USTA league coordinator has nothing to do with your results.

Trust me, there isn't more 4.0s+ in other areas or on this board. Most of the people on this board are probably .5 to 1.5 lower than what they think they are. My guess is 80% of people post here are 3.5 and lower.

Thx

Thx Gameboy,
Just seemed a bit odd how most of the postings are from people who are 4.0++++++ all in other areas. I had heard from some of my local friends who played USTA in other regions that they were surprised when they moved here. One of my friends was a 4.0 elsewhere 2 years ago and moved here to play 4.0 and was getting crushed by the 4.0s here; a couple of other friends said the same with their 3.5 rating...others who moved around agreed. They were saying that they felt our region was a half-point low on the official ratings.

So, I'm thinking if I ever found a job elsewhere then I should be kicking butt if I lateral the rating and should easily be bumped up a rank the first year I'm there.

Right, I guess your area wins Nationals every year since your level there is so high. You should change your moniker to GrandWhiner with all the posts you've made saying the same thing. If you did get bumped to 4.0 it wouldn't make you a better player. In fact you'd probably be lucky to get on a team with your personality.

Ahhh, yes, we finally have it...the personal attack. Well, JRacer, I'm not going to stoop so low as to personally attack you, but just to point out that if you were reading my posts, I was trying to stick to posting my feelings about USTA, the local league/politics, and especially my gripes with the NTRP. This is a forum for posting plusses and minuses, allowing people to rant and rave if necessary.

As you know, there's a lot of ranting/raving on this board, and it's not without a few bad apples that revel in trying to put people down personally. A quick scan on all your posts reveals that this seems to be your modus operandi. A few of the ones I like best are listed below for others to see what you're like.

"...the poster of that thought really doesn't have a clue..."
"I don't care what you're into clown. I go where I want. Pizzzofff"
"...you've belched your nonsense throughout so many threads..."

...and then there's your personal vendetta against Jolly...hope your therapist has a comfortable couch.

Quit the personal attacks on people on this board...grow up!

For the record

Oh, and for the record, I just found the newsletter that was circulated last fall to congratulate the local teams going to the playoffs. Here's what's listed for the local teams in my metro area (and yes, I do play with a few of the people on these teams):

To Nationals:
1. 3.5 Women (my club, my 7.0 mixed doubles partner on this team)
2. 4.0 Women (my club, my 8.0 mixed doubles partner on this team)
3. 4.5 Men
4. 3.0 Senior Women
5. 3.5 Senior Men
6. 4.0 Senior Men (my club)
7. 18 & Under Advanced

And to Sectional Championships:
1. 3.5 Men (club where I play socially with these guys and in organized non-USTA leagues, and can beat some)
2. 4.0 Men
3. 4.5 Women
4. 5.0 Women
5. 5.0 Men (my club --- these are REAL 5.0s unlike the Faux5s that may exist here on this board)
6. 3.5 Senior Women
7. 4.5 Senior Women
8. 4.5 Senior Men

So, judge for yourself if your smart-*** comment about "...your area wins Nationals every year since your level there is so high." I have it here in black/white.

Now, feel free to childishly turn this into a personal attack like you always do, Racer.

So how many of your teams actually won Nationals......very few I expect. Big deal, lots of teams go to Sectionals and Nationals. And yes I do call out whiners and liars and buffoons. So of course that would include you, the biggest whiner of all. I suspect you're the usual mid-level 3.5 who thinks he's a 4.0 (a dime a dozen). And what's with all the bashing of your league coordinater Mr.Holierthanthou? Guess you're not so innocent after all. Waah I hate NTRP. Waah I hate the USTA. Waah I had to play with bad partners. Waah I'm going to quit tennis if I don't get bumped this year.......GrandWhiner indeed.

Well, considering the percentage of whines compared to number of posts made he is. Just give him some time and I'm sure he'll lead in total number of whines also.

Ya, but just because he's whining about something that is completely silly doesnt mean he's the biggest whiner.

It's not like these other guys who come on here cry about how horrible the USTA League is and how it's destroyed tennis, then they disappear for three months and then come back and make a thread where they are asking for negative things to do say about it when clearly their only motivation is to complain about it and feel bad.
