2009 USTA Year-End Ratings Move Predictions

As we approach year-end and we all start speculating whether or not the USTA will make mass changes and when ratings will be posted, etc... I thought - why not predict your own fate?

So - simply state here one of the following choices as your Prediction:

Stay the Same
Move Up this year
Move Down this year

After ratings are posted - come back and edit your post (leaving your original prediction) and post what actually happened. For example:

This will prove whether any of us actually have a clue or if indeed it's all just magic!

Stay the Same - (3.0) I think I am going to sign up for both a 3.0 and a 3.5 league.

Update: Rated at 2.5 - I only played three USTA matches last year. It was my first year to be in the USTA. I lost 2 and won 1 at 3.0

I am not sure where to play now. I have been playing mostly with 3.5 players. I have never taken a set from them but lately the scores have been 3-6 4-6 on average. When I do play with 3.0's I am usually winning 6-3 6-4. Where should I play for 2010? I will likely play another tournament in December at 3.0.

Prior to all the speculation about overall rating increases, I would've guessed moving down to 3.5. Now I think I will stay at 4.0 because of this.

I am going to say 5.5, but I sure hope that isn't the case. 5.0 is lonely enough. If this new algorithm bumps plenty of people up all the way to the top, it won't seem to do much good. In my area, there are already no 4.5 leagues and no 5.0 leagues. Hopefully this doesn't result in more people at 5.0 and 5.5 with no leagues there and a weak 4.5 league. There will be a 4.5 league according to our coordinator, which in my opinion, will not be of too high of a level. There are only a handful of 5.0+ players in LA that play tennis, and I fear this change may make the situationw orse.

I say that USTA bump up everybody 1 level to make the ratings eval more accurate. So much cheating has made a Mockery of ratings descriptions..

seems like few AR Players got bumped even from the Sectional Team, but I go 2-1 at 4.5 and 1-2 at 5.0 and get a bump to 5.0. Anyone who knows me I am an average 4.5 at "BEST" oh well guess I get to get stomped.

Honestly, I'm completely baffled...I have a friend who has played singles at 3.5 nationals two years in a row...and she did NOT get bumped!

At least one guy at my club got the double bump and based on my sampling of ladies and men players at my club, I'd say 50% were bumped up. 3.5->4.0 had the most bump ups. Not too many 4.0->4.5 and none of our 4.5's got bumped to 5.0.

We had I think 8 out of 12 from our team bumped up

Based on who was bumped there was only 1 player who I was surprised stayed at 3.0 as he and his partner played almost exclusively. My thought is that he didn't play Twilight with us and his partner had a blowout win @ Districts. The other players on our squad either had poor seasons or are 3.0 stalwarts. One of our players I think only played in 3 matches all season, but had a good win @ Districts that likely put him over the top.

I was a bit surprised at some of the players who were bumped up when looking at some of my opponents from throughout the year. A total of 17 out of 24 opponents were bumped up as well. I do think its the right thing, especially at 3.0.

One of my teamates successfully auto appealed after his bump up to a 3.5. Another teamate appealed and was denied. Interesting thing about the successful appeal is he played in 7 matches (plus a couple tournaments), so the rumored automatic denial if you played in 6 matches must not be true (at least for the Southern Section or SC).

From a general standpoint, almost all of the top players from our local league got bumped. Should make for lots of new faces representing our Local League at State.

Remember that the 6 matches have to be ones recognized by the computer (i.e. not 6-0 6-0 matches or matches against non-computer-rated players). Also, didn't making the playoffs mean your teammates and you got benchmark ratings? I thought those can't be appealed? Or is this a different team you're referring to?

This is our adult spring league team, not combo. All our our benchmark ratings are from going to sectionals two years ago as 2.5s. This was our first year as a 3.0 team.

I double checked and one of the matches likely wouldn't count because he lost to a guy that got a mid-year DQ. So that would bring him down to 6 played matches. I am guessing that one of the other matches must have been against some self-rated players or something.

I saw that you got the double bump. I only know of one person here in the PD that happened to.

Two of the guys we played at States in the spring (from LCTA) got double-bumped (matter of fact, my partner and I were the only ones to beat them all year, including at Sectionals). Also I know of one (sandbagger) guy from LATA that got double-bumped.
