2011 Davis Cup QF-USA vs. ESP

This loss by the American is the reason why I don’t take Davis Cup seriously when comparing player’s achievement. If the other country sucks, an average team can win DC without much of a fight. Here, the US had the home court advantage and gets to choose the best surface to beat Spain. And without their best player(Nadal), Spain still managed to move on.

Bryan’s brothers >>>>>>>>>> Verdasco/Granollers in doubles. Yet, the lesser players gets to move on in the next round b/c their team is better. Feel sorry for the Bryan’s brother since Roddick/Fish was so good at choking.

Nadal didn’t have to do anything, and he is in a position to win DC if he ever decide to join the team from now on. And Granollers might as well get one too just for toddling along with his teammates.

The trouble is a single player may not even have to win a match and still be part of a DC winner. Pretty sad.

I saw lots of empty seats, but this sold out in MINUTES? Was it Ticket Brokers buying them up?

And Yes this is why it shouldn't have been in Austin. There are better Pockets of Tennis Fans that would have been just as vocal in other parts of US.

It was completely full. Ticket brokers got a lot of them early on. Most people I know who were there got tix through brokers. Scalpers were selling at face value, though, right outside the gate.

BNP Paribas had a LOT of seats down low. They had a ton of clients there each day, from what I saw.

The empty seats you saw were people who were there...but they left. Or they were BNP Paribas people chilling out in the tent (nice, food, drink, air conditioning).

The halls and concession stands were kind of a cluster at lulls in the matches. I think fans just got pooped Friday night after Fish's loss and Roddick's surges, and loss. Yeah, by 8 or 8:30 pm, it was getting pretty quiet.

The SPanish fans had more stamina than our folks. There were only about two hundred of them, but they were pretty charismatic. Even the signage (BNP Paribas, MADRID tourism board) had you feeling this was in Europe and not the States.

This happens all the time:
Czechs outcheered us in LA. The Aussies were way louder than us in Boston. The Swedes in SoCal and also in Vegas. The Slovaks in Oklahoma. The Spanish in Houston. The Italians in Indy. The Indians, the Spanish, etc in NC, FL. The Croats in Carson (when Ljubo basically singlehandedly overpowered us). The Swiss team is the only one I can think of that were more reserved than us in recent home ties. It's like a garden party....like a homecoming game in which we just pony up for tickets and we expect a win.

I brought a big fat flag. I yelled my head off.
And our bench was generally half-empty.

The Spanish bench? Full. A red row full of heart and soul. Kudos to the Bryan twins. Berger seemed into it. So did the young brother on the bench. Other than that, it was a pretty low energy effort from our side. Probably too much fun on 6th street in the evenings.

Congrats Spain. Well done. Good luck against the Frenchies.

For us, it's back to the practice court.

Frankly, I'd love to see Roddick and Fish play to their potential. I'd love to see Courier dress like Costa and get into it. The REservoir Dogs suit look was really lame.

I'd love to see maybe Harrison step things up in coming years.

I go whenever I can to a home DC tie. We win, we lose....but this was by far the most sad tie for me, personally.

T E A M? Isn't that the whole Idea. Invidual's can perfrom in ATP events. I am not a big Fan of Tennis but I enjoy seeing players have to depend on others. Seeing Fish fold in my humble opinion is exactly what team sport is about.

I'd love to see Courier dress like Costa and get into it. The Reservoir Dogs suit look was really lame.

The Suit just reaffirmed the US Uptight Tennis attitude. Yea a Stars and Strips warmup with big FAT USA on the back is a better look. This ain't no BUSINESS meeting.

He says he's not there to be a cheerleader, well **** they needed something. Other than the Bryans looked like a stiff convention. On TV just looked dead even when Fish got the 3rd set. Just seemed folks were waiting for the inevitible.

Yes I live in SoFla the Spainards and just about every other country cheer their A$$es off.

No, I like the suit. He looks like an actual businessman, and he wanted the team to get down to business. We need a business attitude.

The stuff Pat McEnroe wore didn't help either.

Truth^.

What I don't get is how Roddick and Courier (bona fide American Davis Cup heroes) sat and let this happen.

We are Disney Channel...or we are suits. Or we are effeminate little girls. Or we are having wine with our wives.

We need a little early 80s Mac. We need the Clash, the Stones or Led Zeppelin on the PA (instead of that pop crap while the cast of High School Musical or Glee or whatever were tossing tee shirts into the crowd). We need some ballsy tennis play instead of that timid, passive, play not to lose body language Fish and Roddick brought on the big points.

Ferru is a freaking warrior. A 5 ft 8 warrior. The little dude brought it. Alberto Costa brought it all 3 days.
Lopez is kind of girly, but even Lopez brought it.
That kid, Granollers, who is very green, but even he brought it! I sat right across from him -- he was feeling it through each and every point of all three singles matches.

I hope they televise the semis here: Spain and France, so I can see it...so our team can see what Davis Cup warriors play like (just in case Roddick and Courier do not remember).
I'm rooting for Tsonga. I'm also rooting for Ferru and company. It's going to be a war.

That suit screamed effeminate hipster. Your business idea is great. In concept. Anyway, this is a small thing. But dressing like Mr. Pink or Mr. Black from reservoir dogs is NOT business. Jim Courier is an American Davis Cup hero. Used to be a bada55. Now, he's a hipster from Manhattan with Hollywood effete coarsing through is veins. With an early 80s haircut from central Florida still.

We need something. I sort of wish Mac had another chance, even when his first run ended so badly. Then again, it'd probably be even worse. He believes in Davis Cup so much, and so few do right now, other than the Bryans and Mardy Fish.

Truth^.
As I said, we need Mac and Connors attitude. Balls to the wall, run through fire, never ever quit even if you are down 5-0 and 40 love.

Connors, yeah, but not his wavering commitment to Davis Cup. I know what you mean, though, man.

I remember sitting close enough to hear everything, in 2000 in LA at the Forum, when we were facing a loss to the Czechs. Pete was hurting (ankle I think). Johnny Mac got in his face, screaming at him to suck it up for 45 minutes. Pete served like a genius, won the 4th rubber and set the stage for Agassi (who watched almost the whole 4th rubber) to clean up in the 5th match. Straight sets. Triumphant win for the US.

This was John's legacy.

Frankly, I think John left it to Pat because Pat was a suit. And John did not really have the fire and the faith in the new generation...or the connection Pat did with the Blake/Fish/Roddick hegemony.

I'm at a loss. Who is next on the world stage? Not Americans. We don't even know what Davis Cup is.

I attended the doubles match last Saturday and really enjoyed it. The crowd and atmosphere in Austin were wonderful. Many of my friends were also able to attend the singles matches, and they were all very happy for the opportunity to see Davis Cup live. Andy may not have given his best tennis, but Austin still owes him a big thank you for bringing Davis Cup to our city.

Andy and Marty owe Courier an apology. By the sad/concern on Courier's face during their matches, it looks like he wishes he was out their playing instead of them.

Maybe the ITF should allow DC captain to compete if they want to. Courier might have a shot at beating Ferrer/Lopez.

Andy/Fish at best can be the US cheer leaders.

fixed it for you.

i dunno wtf is wrong with you guys, all this 'nobody cares about the davis cup' crap.

Only in your country!!!

Is it any wonder your star is falling despite a huge population and awesome tennis history?

Very sad.
Thank you for reincarnating it :)
And yea, win or lose, Davis Cup is like a fifth slam for me. People wonder why the state of American tennis is where it's at, they should look in the mirror. Sure the Austin crowd was supportive of the team, but did anybody think they could actually win? People need to realize that the 90's was too incredible to imagine and it is hard to follow up. 2 guys in the top 10! That's bad?!

I love Davis cup tennis. It should get more coverage here. The internation atmosphere is always wonderful, much like the Australian open crowd.

I'm still confused how you can have two top 10 players and the world's best doubles team - all of whom love a fast surface - playing at home against a bunch of dirtballers and lose.

This result confounded me. I was going to put money on the USA but couldn't get to the betting agency in time. I'm glad I didn't.

I did wonder at the time why they didn't play the tie on grass. I know it was a fast hardcourt but I would have thought grass would have given the US even more of an advantage.

They thought Nadal would play. Maybe they should consider Nadal being tired next time and see what Ferrer and Lopez have the weakest chance at. That is grass.
