2012 ATP Sudden Death League: Paris-Bercy Masters

So the World Tour Finals event is next week. I've never personally participated in the WTF event. However, from my understanding, it is perhaps the most difficult event to win due to the rules of the game. However, I have been thinking about how to potentially shake up the event a little bit. Here are some of the ideas that I have thought of.

Idea #1: For the RR portion, continue the same format of choosing a player once a day based on the OOP. From semi-finals onwards, players can choose whoever regardless if he/she have chosen him previously. Caveat is that if you chose a player during the RR play and it is still RR play, you cannot choose that player again until the semi-finals.
Example #1: If Player A chose Djokovic on Tuesday during his RR match. Player A can choose Djokovic again in the semi-finals but not on Thursday (if he is playing every other day)

Idea #2: Instead of daily OOP, players make picks based on the RR round. (This is similar to players making picks based on the rounds instead of the daily OOP)

Idea #3: Keep it to the same format as every tournament we have.

Idea #4: Open for others.

I think I prefer #2. With #1, players would need to make 6 correct picks using 6 different players in the RR just to reach the Semis. Although theoretically possible, that seems way too difficult. Even if you can pick someone new in the Semis, I highly doubt anyone will reach that far. #2 is more reasonable I think in only needing to make 3 RR picks, but still challenging enough because you'd need to conserve the players you want to use for the Semis and Final (where presumably most of the points would be up for grabs). Aside from maybe Fed vs. Ferrer or Fed vs. Tipsy, there really are no freebies at WTF (and it's probably smart to save Fed for the Semis or Final anyway).

Is it even possible for anyone to win with format #3? I believe you'd need to make 8 correct picks, but since 1 or 2 players usually go 0-3 in the Round Robin, even someone from the future wouldn't be able to make 8 correct picks with 8 different players.

well good to see my dumb pick was made on Day 1. Thanks for the competition to the leaders. See everyone in 2013 need to regroup and study my players

After my first run to the finals in Basel, here I am knocked out in the first round. Good luck to everyone still in, and I'm so excited to play for a full year next year.

14 gone from Kohly, 3 gone from Istomin and it looks like another 3 will be gone from Mayer LOL

Congrats to Kohly for also gaining membership on the PHAYOR list for causing back-to-back mass exoduses.

Has there ever been a tournament where the winner was determined on the first day of play? I have visions of Paire and Lopez also losing today leaving the lone pick of Anderson as champion!

It certainly hasn't happened this year. I have to admit it would be quite funny, even though it would ruin my suddenly very good chances of finishing in the Top 8.

Race Update: Before today, only 12 people had a mathematical chance at the Top 8. With kishnabe out and Woodrow MIA, myself and Big_Dangerous are the last 2 currently out of the Top 8 who could sneak in. wrxinsc and dcdoorknob at #7 and #8 both lost, so that means they're on the bubble while everyone now in the Top 6 of the race (jamesblakefan#1, ********, Eternity, Locotus, JadeC, ark_28 ) have clinched their spots.

Lopez drops the first set....will the bloodshed continue? At least with someone picking Andujar at least 2 people now will make it all the way to Day 2.

This is definitely one of the worst mass exoduses in SDL history (I believe 2011 Dubai was also up there as well)

To be honest, I'm not totally surprised that this tournament would have a big exodus (although I wouldn't have guessed to this extent). A combination of tired, worn out, unmotivated players who are probably looking forward to their ridiculously short offseason and the fact that this tournament gives the Top 16 a first round bye left no certainties on Day 1. One of the main reasons I took Paire is because I figured a Frenchman playing the night session at Paris should be highly motivated, but I really have no confidence in him otherwise.

Are only the top 8 in the SDL race allowed to compete in the WTF?

Everyone competes for 750-1500points....the top 8 however get bonus point competition(minimal...maybe like 250-500).

I think Jaychu will fill us all on the format and about the top 8.

100 percent sure that everyone competes......Jaychu has stated in the opening page.

Thanks. I was pretty sure everyone competed but people were saying how they 'clinched' a spot so it was a little unclear.

There is a bonus portion for the Top 8 players that have qualified for the event. kishnabe is correct that the WTF event is opened to all players.

Congrats to Locotus, JadeC and ark_28 for officially qualifying for the SDL Top 8 Bonus Event joining jamesblakefan#1, ******** and Eternity in the field.

There are two spots remaining for the event and the table above lists what each player needs in order to qualify for the event. The points that are in bold and underline are the current points that the player has earned. Only CDNguy87 and Big_Dangerous can take the number 7 and 8 spots that are currently occupied by wrxinsc and dcdoorknob.

I will update this table on a daily basis.

Even though this slightly hurts my chances of making the Top 8, I just noticed that dcdoorknob doesn't appear to have any Shanghai points added to his total, even though he made a few picks before defaulting that tournament.
