2012 Davis Cup World Group Semifinals - General Discussion Thread

Really looking forward to the Del Potro/Berdych match tomorrow.

I was just asking a friend whether the Czech captain was obligated to sub someone in since Berdych had played twice in a row.

I sure hope so. I'm rooting for Juan Martín, but I don't favor his chances against an in-form Berdych if his wrist isn't 100% -- even if he's playing in his beloved Argentina.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll actually get to see it since the network showing Davis Cup here in Canada is only showing the Canada/South Africa WG Playoff tie and the Spain/USA semifinal tie.

Remembering my last visit to your lovely Montreal -- I'd say you're lucky to have a network that's broadcasting any tennis. I asked my friends if hockey was the only sport you all are allowed to watch up there. :-)

Yeah, I've actually been pretty impressed with the coverage in Canada the last couple years, especially with Sportsnet for stepping up to the plate and covering some of the events that get less exposure like Davis Cup. TSN will pick up ESPN's coverage of all four Grand Slams, while Sportsnet will pick up the slack and broadcast the Masters events and even the later rounds of some 500 and 250 events. They also do their very own coverage of Davis Cup and the Rogers Cup and maybe a couple other events so they don't always just rip coverage from another network.

Hockey, though, is king in Canada. I don't know what we're going to do now that it looks like the NHL players will be locked out.

That coverage sounds impressive. :-)

As it turns out, you won't miss the other match - this just in via the official site:

In the reverse singles Berdych plays No. 45 Carlos Berlocq, who has replaced the injured Juan Martin del Potro, first and then Stepanek faces Juan Monaco.
Del Potro has been battling with a wrist injury of late and despite recording victory over Stepanek on Friday he announced on Saturday that he would be unable to contest his second singles rubber against Berdych. This means the Czech team are now the odds-on favourites to progress to the final.

Sadly it looks as if delpo has had to pull out. Berlocq is listed for tomorrows match with berdych. I hope its nothing too serious and delpos back in time for the paris masters/wtf 100% and ready to go.

Okay, we'll never win this thing. This was a huge chance but Del Potro and Nalbandian both are injured. Charly won't beat Berdych. It's a pitty because Monaco on clay was beating Stepanek probably. And in the final we had a huge chance playing at home and with Nadal probably not playing.

Charly :) I didnt know his nickname was that. Argentina will win dc in the next few years you have nothing to worry about. Delpo has been told to rest his right wrist for two weeks by the team doctor. He should be good for the wtf fingers crossed.

A friend of mine reminded me that Berdych may very well be tired. This will be his third match in the tie, and he just came off a long USO (I saw his semi).

He's in form, but Berlocq has given even clay specialists like Nico Almagro and Ferru a challenge on clay during the Golden Swing, yes?

Maybe we just need to have faith on this one?

:-)

Yeah, Delpo was injured and he still played and won one match. But the rest of the team isn't strong enough without Nalbandian. Hope Delpo can be fine for the WTF or earlier too.

I believe a final betwen Czech Rep and Spain would take place in the Czech Rep.

They played the final in 2009 in Spain, so I think they should play in Czech Rep now. Maybe we will saw a Rosol-Nadal rematch.

On the other end of the spectrum (given what's going on in the playoffs) can I just say that Sweden should retire from tennis. Completely. Permanently. I mean seriously, BELGIUM? I can't say much more than the fact that Swedish tennis is utterly useless right now. Every single club is farming the same sort of player which are baseliners. Those who DO try and be different are shot down. When someone DOES turn pro and that's usually WAY too early, media is all over them hyping them up like crazy. The financial backing is zero, they get injured and seemingly need all their prime years to recover, and when they're back they're usually 28 years old and hovering around the 300 mark, struggling to even make a living. The one who was marked to save Swedish tennis will ultimately end up killing it some more.

TL;DR: Swedish tennis is *insert derogatory word for excrement, or any other swear*.

Belgium has Goffin this year, and Rochus has always been kind of underrated for a shorter guy, imo (he's challenged Roger on more than one occasion).

So I'm not sure you want to use the quality of the opponent that beat them as a basis for grounds for removal ...

And wouldn't they have had Soderling if he had been healthy ...?

It's funny, I was just thinking about this subject earlier today. I scanned the rankings on the ATP site and I was shocked to find there wasn't a Swede in the top 300. I don't know who the top ranked Swede is right now because I didn't bother to look past #300.

Just odd when you think about the champions Sweden has produced in Borg, Wilander and Edberg and some lower tier players like Thomas Johansson and Bjorkman.

Completely forgot about Soderling, though. I guess he's kind of a wild card. He's not ranked because he's been away from the game but when playing he's proven he's a top 10 player.

So one top 10 player and that's it in the top 300.

Wow, i didn't realize how sad the state of Swedish tennis is. Although i am disapointed for sweden, im happy that Belgium will have a chance to complete in the world group. It will be a good experience for Goffin

Also, i am so sad Delpo had to pull out. Man that guy has had some bad luck.

But cmon argentinian fans, don't lose all hope yet, Berlocq is no clay court slouch. He is 45 in the world

I visited the Davis Cup doubles match of the Netherlands versus Switzerland yesterday, Haase/Rojer - Federer/Wawrinka and made a few photos.

Here are some:

4 players in the top 100. Not too many countries can say that.

Can hewitt come back from 2 sets down? Sad to see him go down like this after he was up 2 breaks in the first set. With Roddick and Ferrero out, I have a feeling he may retire after the next AO. Unless he wins this rubber and get Australia back into the World Group cause I'm sure he would want to continue playing davis cup at least.

Looks like Cedrik Stebe, Young Phenom from Germany will be the hero in 5th rubber. He is beating Hewitt of australia comfortably.

Can this bolt Stebe into top 10 or top 20 ? They say he is top 10 talent.

K so ..... does anybody know what's going on? the official website for dc is now showing Berlocq (not del potro) facing berdych in the 4th rubber?

right, Delpo is out due to his wrist injury getting worse yesterday. they are hoping Monaco can beat weak fast court player from czech

do you know whetehr it's the right or the left wrist?

berlocq has determination and skill, but he's 0-2 in H2H with berdych, so it's bound to be CR in 3! :(

he doesnt seem ready to go onto the senior's circuit .... er ... I mean the champions circuit ... just quite yet. he'll probly try one more australian open before he retires! :)

Very Odd. i was watching that match and he was making errors on every other point. i am talking about what looks like Unforced errors. Stebe maybe hitting a heavy ball but that was really unusual to see hewitt make error after error.

Anybody can have a bad day.

Hewitt was wasted, had no legs left. It wasn't a bright idea to play the old guy 3 days in a row, especially since he hasn't played much tennis this year.

Its his usual wrist that he had surgery on. right wrist. Can Berloq win and be the HERO ? Would Berdy choke ? he chokes alot on clay courts.

that's really terrible news .... unfortunately, delpo has been having issues with his left wrist recently, being forced to take mto for that in cincy, i believe it was, and also having some left wrist complaints at the uso.

but in is first rubber in buenos aires at parque roca there was a moment when he slipped on the clay while trying to turn for a ball that stepanek had hit behind him. as he turned, delpo started slipping and put his racket down to stabilize himself, but that turned out to be the wrong move to make. He winced upward, allowing his racket to fall to the ground, while simulaneously his body continued toward the ground, with weight being distributed onto his right forearm. Obvious pain reaction by delpo before he was able to regain his feet and continue play.

ooops ... kept looking around ... found this (bit of a relief that) .....

Argentinian Davis Cup captain Martin Jaite announced that World No. 8 Juan Martin del Potro will not play his scheduled match against Tomas Berdych on Sunday due to his left wrist injury. He will be replaced by Carlos Berlocq.

According to team physician Miguel Khoury, del Potro, who missed almost a year after having right wrist surgery in 2010, will immobilize his wrist for 10 days.

Well, that was ... anticlimatic.

:-?

I can't help but wonder if there might have been a difference if Pico and Radek had played first.

^^^Wrist is wrist. right or left. not too much difference.
LOL ... that's funny! :D

now it seems there are dueling stories. that story said "left wrist," now this story says "right wrist"

"Del Potro out of Davis Cup semifinals due to injury

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro has pulled out of Sunday's first singles in the Davis Cup semi-final against Czech Republic because of an injury to his right wrist.

Captain Martin Jaite said Del Potro, who almost withdrew earlier in the week, was feeling more pain in his wrist after his three-set win over Radek Stepanek in Friday's opening singles. ...

"Juan Martin finished yesterday's match in quite a bit more pain than the previous days. He's not in condition to play," said Argentina team doctor Miguel Khoury.

"He will not move his wrist for 10 days. That's the best decision for Juan Martin and the team."

Former US Open champion Del Potro, who missed most of the 2010 season after having surgery on the same wrist, was recommended two weeks of rest by his doctor but decided to make himself available to Jaite on Wednesday.

I'd think it would make a big difference depending on which the racquet arm is.

exactly!
and, of course, depending on whether it's the same arm that underwent surgery previously.

oh, juan ... i feel so sorry for him ... now let's see how his beloved Argentineans respond to his giving his all for them this time :o

Honestly, I'm less concerned about which wrist than whether he's going to be able to play in Asia, Paris, and at WTF.

Can't help but feel like that tie might have turned out really differently if Pico and Radek had played first.

:-?

good point ... somewhere along the line I got the idea that one of delpo's goals for this year was to play at the world tour finals. now that may be in jeopardy
