2012 Davis Cup World Group Semifinals - General Discussion Thread

oh my gosh, ruerooo ... taking a closer look at the article you linked, it's reporting left wrist as the problem!

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will ignore medical advice to rest his injured left wrist and open against Radek Stepanek on Friday in the Davis Cup semifinal between Argentina and the Czech Republic.

either wrist is bad, but imo, right wrist w/b worse ... so I hope it's the left :(

So it's that same wrist. That's what I thought.

And you're exactly right. If his tournament participation is in jeopardy after this, then of course he won't be able to get enough points to qualify.

You know ... when I first read that article it was before the tie started. I was getting a lot of flack for being a Debbie Downer, especially after he won that first point -- but this was exactly the reason for my concern.

Was it worth it? Only he can tell us.

But I'm also really with you on the fellow Argentinians and how they treat him. I know there was a contingent that followed him to the Olympics to cheer. He really seems to look on that as an inspirational source.
The whole county better be nice to him now.

Darn ! Delps injured. I was hoping to see the Argies in the final, maybe winning it.

I don't see Radek winning anything for Cze.
Isn't Rosol better than Steps ?

Most of these pros are ambidextrous. look at Nadal or Sharapova, they can play with either arm or wrist.

Typical vintage Fedace :D

In singles,i agree it will be tough for Stepanek to win any match against Spain but in doubles alongside Berdych, they are a strong team. Also guys like Rosol or Minar have 0 DC experience so putting them to play a DC final would be ridiculous.
I think for CZE to win DC,Berdych needs to win his 2 singles and win the doubles with Stepanek. It will be tough but not impossible,as i see him favourite against Lopez or Almagro,in doubles they are favourites and it`s a 50/50 match against Ferrer.

Are you talking about Feli Lopez or Marc Lopez?
Feli isn't playing this year. Marc has a better doubles record than Berd-itch.

The doctors apparently say no movement for 10 days. They haven't even mentioned what that does to his tournament participation, which in turn threatens his placement to qualify for WTF. Sadface.

I don't even know what injury kept D-Nal both out of the USO and here, but I hope he's healing from it well. Had he been able to participate, I think this would have been a very different tie.

Aw, I was looking forward to seeing Delpo back at the O2. Hopefully he still makes it somehow.

Amir Weinstraub the hero in 5th rubber against Go Soeda who is top 50 in the world. Amir is like #235 in the world. and Bradley Klahn beat his butt real easy in the challenger. and yet this Amir dude plays like he is top 10 in the 5th rubber against Japan.
What is up there ?

Kei just played 5 sets to win his 4th rubber and get it to this 5th rubber where Go was supposed to win this match easy. but Nooooo

Amir played out of this world, maximizing his potential to save Israel.
yea mostly he just has some mental barrier that ruins his career, as you said,
losing early in almost any event he's in.
but he surprised me and really outperformed himself yesterday.
it was also very aggressive match so it was fun.

I think it's amazing what some of these guys from outside the ATP top 100 end up doing in Davis Cup.

Makes the game exciting. :-)

Some Delpo news:
His injured wrist is the left one, the same one that almost didn't let him play USO. Don't know the injure but they say is nothing serious, it just give him pain and cant get worse, he has to stop playing for 1 month to get it well. So he will have his wrist immobilized for 10 days plus 2 weeks of rehab. So he wont make t to the indoor season, and probably wont be able to make it to the O2.
I was a the davis cup 4th and 5th games, delpo was there and people started whistling at him, very sad to watch. Argentinians are very disrespectful unfortunately. But some people cheered him though (me one of them) I'll say it was 50/50.
And there are a lot of fights going on the team, we will see how this ends up affecting next year Davis cup.

Why doesn't he just switch to 1-handed backhand and plays like Gasquet ?

Horrible.
He hurt his wrist playing for them. And against his doctor's wishes.
The least the country can do is support him.
And after he brought them a bronze medal, too.
I am disappoint.

Argentinians don't respect their greatest player since Vilas...very sad to see. Americans would kill to have the likes of a DelPo to cheer for.

First of all, you are generalizing quite a bit. Argentines show plenty of respect for their top tennis players. Millions of people in Argentina tuned in for the Gaudio vs Coria FO final in 2004. They gave Del Potro a heros welcome after he won the US Open.

As for the bolded part, lol no. Americans are too spoiled to fawn over a guy who has, and probably will finish with, 1 slam in his career. At Del Potro's age, Roddick had achieved far better results yet most of the time all we heard about was how Roddick was garbage compared to Sampras and Agassi.

This is a good point. Especially that 2009 Wimbledon. I doubt we'll see an American in the next 10-15 years with the ability to reach the level Roddick played that 2009 Wimbledon. Americans may start to fully appreciate Roddick after they suffer through the next decade of futility.

They did, but apparently he was booed at the fourth rubber this past CD ... after he pretty much gave his wrist for them to win the first point.

apparently, the argentines who were booing are ingrates.
(thanks for cheering for delpo, hersito)!
it's so rotten unfair the way they treat delps!

hopefully, delpo will reassess. true fans still love you even when you lose. did the swiss boo roger when he lost to isner?

true fans understand that you are a human being, not a machine. if delpo isnt fit to play o2 or doesnt have enough points for O2, it's their fault, cuz he played on an injured wrist for them .... dammit!
