Wow! USC never looked like they were going to win comfortably, but they did look like they could pull it out.

What happened to Gomez? He lost 3 games leading 5-4 in the second, and then after regrouping winning the first game of the third set, he loses 6 straight games.

A USC loss doesn't by any means remove them from among the NCAA champion favorites. BUT, would a UCLA win mean that they should be added to the list of true contenders?

NCAA title contenders:

USC
Virginia
Ohio State
Georgia
UCLA?

Anyone else? - yeah I know there are teams that could pull a singular upset of one of these teams, but are there any other teams that could take out 2 or even 3 of these teams on the way to the title? Duke? Kentucky?

A lot of us had already added them to the list of contenders. I would say that five teams can win the title this year. Last year I really thought it could only be USC or Virginia, and they met in the finals. UCLA, Ohio State, and Georgia are right there in the hunt this year. It will be a great NCAA tournament.

I wouldn't say they quit, but the UNC match was one where they were purely out fought.

i guess i'm playing devils (ha ha blue devils. bad joke there) advocate here but were you at the match? did you see them get out fought or did unc raise their level?

they came back from a tough doubles point against ucla at indoors (losing 3 tiebreaks) and dominated singles. One can point out one time matches for a bunch of teams but it doesn't necessary mean it's a trend. Someone could say usc isn't a tough team because they won doubles and 4 first sets but ended up losing the match but I don't think it's true.

Cunha has to come up bigger than he did vs UVA or UNC if they're going to have a chance at the title

Duke without a win at 1 singles does not beat a team like USC or UVA

but try telling UCLA that Duke doesn't have fight in big matches...yes, I know they have added a middle-of-the-lineup guy since then and clearly gotten tougher, but I still think Duke matches up well enough w/ UCLA to take them to the wire

for the reason stated above that Duke really needs Cunha to be a part of huge wins, Duke against USC is a really bad matchup

vs anyone else, i think a win for Duke is very realistic this year, we shall see how the draw shakes up...

something tells me Duke has some fire in their belly this weekend given that destruction of NC St....they could earn a realllly high seed for the tournie if they're able to win these next two matches

and revenge an issue in both the semis and possible finals

so we should see the best Duke has to offer at this point in the year the next day or two...another loss vs UNC and i'd certainly agree to taking them out of the contender category...a solid win vs UNC combined with a win or another 4-3 loss vs UVA and i think it would be mighty hard to argue that they don't have a shot at it if someone else (like UCLA) takes USC out of the equation

See now, Steinman and Ho doesn't feel so bad now, hey ? these guys from UCLA at #5 and #6 are pretty good.

I think they might still feel bad since they only got one game between the two of them. :)

Adrien Puget (UCLA) d. Robert Stineman (STAN) 6-0, 6-1
Dennis Mkrtchian (UCLA) d. Daniel Ho (STAN) 6-0, 6-0

looks like UCLA sandbag the 1st singles and put Thompson against Johnson ..Thompson hasn't beaten Sarmiento for so many matches and Meister is ranked 21 and Clay is 78 playing #1.. looks fishy to me..

Thompson beats all his teammates in practice. he has the biggest serve in Socal. so he is playing #1 spot for UCLA

to quote (Iverson)practice ?? practice?? so why hasn't he been winning ?

It's the coach's decision. when you have your top 3 players playing about even level then you can put any one of those players at #1. You put the player that wants the challenge of playing all the best players in NCAA D1.

I heard that .. a opposing team coach coach could make a formal challenge to the NCAA governing board if this kind of thing occur.. the team then needs to justify the way they set their line-up.. if it is too blatant, then the NCAA will forfeit that win..

In the UCLA-USC dual match, USC could challenge the lineup in advance and play under protest, notifying UCLA that they will complain to the NCAA, or something like that. Not in a tournament. In the conference tournaments going on elsewhere, teams submit a lineup in advance, other teams can protest, the officials rules on the protest before the tourney starts, no more complaints after that. NCAA tournament works the same way.

Manzini takes it 6-2 in the 3rd and Texas Tech has tied it at 3 all. #2 singles is in a 3rd set tiebreak for the match.

UPDATE - Escobar takes the tiebreak and TT wins it 4-3.

let me make this easier for you

it's

UGA

everyone else.

USc showed that they cannot get it done. UCLA is pretty weak and yet USC lost to them when they had a lead AT HOME. This shows the weakness of USC not the strength of UCLA.

Im a little ashamed to see no Big 12 teams even remotley in the discussion. Oklahoma would be but they play like one legit match every 2 months. It's like a vacation season for them. They need to schedule tougher.

Well, Oklahoma did only play Virginia and Pepperdine as top 10 team, but we also played a whole host of top 25 team: Indiana, Florida State, Texas, Tulsa, Texas A&M, Tech, Baylor. I guess it's hard for the coach to foresee a huge letdown season for all 4 of Baylor, Texas, A&M, and Tech. Normally, these 4 and not to mention Oklahoma State are all frequent top 15 from season to season.

I really want to watch UGA vs UK. Why can't ESPNU show it? At least ESPN3. This is a big time match that we just have to do live scoring. It really sucks. Let me check the ESPNU schedule today... ah yes. NC State spring game lol and lacrosse. BTW they show lacrosse like 12 hours a day on that station. They should just rename it the lacrosse station.

ESPN won't even think of covering college tennis unless it is the Finals of NCAA tournament. :(

The reality Feddie is covering a college tennis dual is much like covering Poker. It's hard to do live and much easier to tape, edit and replay later with only the highest of highlights being shown.

FSN (Not ESPN) is covering a number of conf. championships like CUSA and will replay later this week.

I agree with this. I also would like to see UVA vs Duke on TV or ESPN3.

I feel like it would be great for ESPN3.

I think best way is to hope, they play all future championships in colleges that has the webcam. You can watch any court you want. I also hope they had record option.

Looks like Ohio State on their way to a blowout win over Michigan. Bucks swept the dubs point 8-3 8-4 8-4 and have already taken 1st sets at 3, 5, & 6 and are up on other courts too.
