There seem to be a lot of argument and counter argument over the Olympics final in 2012.
controversies and excuses flying everywhere concerning that match up.
A more fair way to look at it is this match up.
Who wins this match up?

Murray played only slightly better if better, this is his peak imo though.
Federer had nothing left to give, Murray took his oppurtunity very well. All in all it would have been a tough 4/5 setter with Rog winning.

Not sure what you mean.

I presume he means who would have won: Federer in his Wimbledon 2012 final form, or Murray in his Olympics 2012 final form.

I voted Murray. He put in one of his greatest performances in that final, much better than he played in the Wimbledon final - when he lost in a reasonably close 4-set match.

Murray was the same player as Wimbledon 2012 Murray, so Fed in 3-4 sets.

Only difference was, Fed came off an epic long 3 set match with Del Potro then tanked the final as he felt bad for denying Murray 3 grand slams so gave him the OG as charity as he already had a gold medal.

Federer fans should stop crying about Federer being tired. He was very very lucky to even be in this final because Del Potro totally outplayed him but somehow found a way to lose. And Murray actually had Djokovic in the semifinal, a bigger challenge. In 2016 Murray was lucky, yes. Del Potro was the best player in the tournament and was just tired from the match against Nadal. But in 2012 Murray deserved to win.
He deserved to win in 2016 too.

I agree that the winner deserves to win but can you admit that Delpo was exhausted after having a much tougher draw?

No, I can't. Granted he may have been a bit tired but he was looking good in that match and took it to 4 very tough and hard-fought sets a few crucial points of which could have gone either way. He couldn't have done that if he was exhausted.

Murray had a much tougher draw at the WTF and had played much more tennis than Djokovic in the preceding couple of months but he still went on to win!

Not everyone has the fitness of Murray but fair enough on the WTF draw- he beat the #2, #3, #4, #5 and #7 in 7 days! After the amount of tennis he played in the preceding months, I didn't give him enough credit for pulling that tournament win out of the bag. I still believe Delpo was a little hard done by though, but each to their own.

Del Potro played decent in the 1st set and then gave it all in the 2nd.
After that he was plain exhausted.
Lost the 3rd easily, playing very bad.
Murray was also plain terrible in the 4th set,Del Potro wasn't doing anything, but Murray just kept on gifting him games with straight terrible errors. DelPotro was so tired he couldn't even close the 4th after he had it handed on a silver plate

Well, there you go. Both had chances to win, Murray was the one who took them in the end. That's the way it goes...always.

Who knows; If Del Potro was less tired he would have played some points in a different way; and the match would have different. Not sure if he would have won anyway; but if he had a shorter match the day before; very probably the final would have been even better. Del Potro told he felt like throwing up in some moments during that game.

Then it was up to Del Potro to make sure he had shorter matches, wasn't it? You can't keep penalising Murray just because Delpo had a more difficult time getting to the final. Thaty's not Murray's fault, is it? Murray had a couple of tough matches with Fognini and Johnson along the way too. What was he supposed to do....call off the match and hand the trophy to Delpo on account of the fact that Delpo was more tired??

Of course I´m not penalising Murray. Just saying Del Potro was just coming back to tennis and he played a though match against Djokovic in the first round and against Nadal in the semifinals; and in those first days he had two doubles matches, one of them against Nadal/Lopez(maybe he would have not played the doubles but he want to play with his friend Máximo Gonzalez), he practically had no time to enjoy his victroy against Djokovic. The match against Nadal was very demanding and Nishikori didn´t challenge Murray in the other semifinal. That´s that little luck I say and you say it´s not luck.

Every successful player is helped by a little luck now and again. It's part and parcel of the game. Delpo may get lucky against some tired opponent too one day but it won't detract one bit from his achievements!

I would say it´s just an asterisk. It doesn´t detracts the achievement. Considering what you say, we shouldn´t question any achievement!

But I´m agree with what you say; successful player are helped by a little luck sometimes. Those are the God of sports-destiny, maybe. Some sportsmans have said " The harder I work, the luckier I get"

They say Murray is an extremely proffesional guy, probably the hardest worker. I read what his mother told about that. Murray never stops believing and working.

I want to clarify this in this forum; I like Del Potro, he is from my country but I´m not a fanatic of him or any player. It´s just that I don´t like when I read something that I consider unfair, like "just look at the head to head, it´s 6-1" What if there were particular circumstances in some of those matches? It´s fair to say it.... Against with the example of Federer and Nadal; when someone comment on the Madrid 2009 final and say "Look, Roger gave a lesson to that pusher" I dislike it; they didn´t see Nadal was so tired?

Edited to don´t make too much off-topic.

Same 4 setter for Roger like at Wimbledon.

Please explain that sentence in Spanish, I guess you have a little language barrier.

Es muy mujeriego y es infiel. Ha estado con un montón de mujeres y en casos les decía que estaba solo y estaba con varias a la vez; a una chica a la que había oficializado como novia, Stephanie Demner, la engañó.

It really shouldn't bother Fed fans if some people believe Murray would've won such an encounter. After all, how many times have we heard them wittering on about how Roger was a grandfather and way past his prime in 2012(even though he returned to number #1 right after his Wimbledon victory) so if anyone is of the opinion that a great grass courter like Murray, who was arguably at his peak on the surface at the time, would win this hypothetical match, is it really that big a deal? It's not like we're asking if his Olympic form would be enough to defeat Federer of 2006.

Seriously though, I think it'd be similar to their Wimbledon final. Maybe a bit more competitive, but Murray's level in the Olympics wasn't too different from his Wimbledon level.

yeah delpo had no legs in the 4th set. His serve went down the drain.

Murray playing great at Olympics, better than he was at Wimbledon in my opinion where he was solid but had a few close 4 setters in which he would have won more comfortably if he was playing in his Olympic form. Gotta bear in mind that Murray has an awful record against Fed in slams though (even mugs like Berdych and Tsonga have beaten Fed in slams more times than Murray has).

Right you are, but this match up isn't hypothetical since it actually happened at Wimbledon that year in the final. Federer won in 4 sets.

yeah, djoko was a bigger challenge than delpo. explains why he lost to delpo in the bronze match in straights, oh wait.

fed broke delpo first in the final set and served for it at 9 all (IIRC), but got broken back. delpo did not outplay federer. It was an even match.

much better ? nope, not even close.

I've had this conversation with Mainad so many times man :D

Federer was 62 winners and 38 UE's in the Wimbledon final, compared to Murray's 46 winners and 25 errors.

Federer was 24 winners and 31 UE's in the Olympics final, comapred to Murrays 27 winners and 17 errors.

Murray's stats were very similar, Federer's were downright awful - especially for his standards and compared to 4 weeks ago. Murray only served at 51% in the Olympics final as well (compared to 56% at Wimbledon), it was basically the same sort of level as his Wimbledon final only this time he faced a below par Federer.

because umm, fed actually defeated murray in 4 sets in wim 12 when he was in very similar form as in the Olympics ?

and even though past his prime, he had a sort of resurgence post USO 11-cincy 12.
and that was good enough to wrestle #1 away from djoko/nadal.

Federer would win obviously, how is this a debate? He just beat Murray in 4 a few weeks prior. He was gassed after Delpo match. not a Fed Fan, but he's probably the best ever on grass or tied with Sampras and he was playing pretty well in 2012...how could you think Murray who struggles against Fed in slams/big matches would beat the Fed of Wimbledon that year?

It's not all about stats man, there was an air of superiority about Murray's performance in the Olympics final that wasn't there at Wimbledon. He (and the psychological atmosphere created by the crowd) didn't allow Federer to play well.

Nope, the main thing that did not allow fed to play well was delpo tiring fed out.

How the hell else do you explain a stat like 24 W to 31 UEs on friggin' grass from fed?

For perspective he was 62 W to 38 UEs in the 2012 wimby final
he was something like 56 W to 12 UEs in the 2015 wimby SF.

With all this supposed air of superiority, why are Murray's stats similar to the wimby 12 final ?

Also fed's form was clearly lesser at the Olympics compared to wim 12 QF-F, the delpo match worsened his chances in the final considerably.

Er, so you mean Federer being unable to beat Delpo easily should be held against Murray?

no, but its what made murray "look" superior in the Oly 12 final and the final so easy for him.

Else the match would've been a close one..Murray would be favored by a bit , being in better form than fed was, that's it.

But if fed was in wim 12 QF-F form at the Olympics, he'd be favored.

Untired Roger is like fit Rafa. Never been beaten. In fact both have a 101% record when they're fit - true story.

To repeat - Murray played THREE MATCHES between poor tired Roger finishing his semi and taking to the court in the final on Sunday. He was playing 3 matches whilst Roger was recovering.

So please - spare us the excuses fanbois. No matter how much you wail and gnash your teeth (your tears are quite delicious BTW) the record books will reflect that Roger got beaten like a ginger stepchild in 3 straight sets at Centre Court Wimbledon. Those are the facts - deal with them.

On average, yes, Djokovic is a tougher challenge than Delpo. But on that day, far from it. Federer got the tougher SF opponent, not Murray.

Djokovic was such s big challenge that he couldn't even beat an exhausted Delpo in the bronze match LOL.

Murray raised his level in stratospheric fashion in the Olympic final, and Federer played at pretty similar level in Wimbledon and the olympics, so i will go comfortably with Andy in this hypothetical matchup...;)

Murray's level was basically the same in both matches, so Federer in 4-5 IMO.

He weren't playing at the same level at Wimbledon than he was at Olympics. The Murray that blitzed Fed would not be taken to 4 close sets against the likes of Tsonga and Ferrer lmao.
