I think Djokovic can win in 4, but he always hurts himself with horrible starts to big matches. That is why I voted for the 5 option. Hopefully he comes in focused.

Huh? You have to be joking, right? A tough 3-set victory with lots of breaks? What kind of line would be possible with your analysis? You think that Murray and Djokovic are actually going to break each other constantly in each set but Djokovic holds serve once more per set than Murray?

Given Djokovic/Murray history, this has to be the most idiotic prediction of a tennis grand slam ever. Tough 3-set victory with lots of breaks. Somebody shoot me.

I'd give the edge to Murray, regardless of how well he disposed of Ferrer, because i believe Frederer or Murray would have beaten Ferrer rather easily too, because as Jim Courier has been quoted saying, He always loses to the BIG FOUR.

Murray just came off beating Fed in 5 at a Grand Slam, and he beat Djokervic in 5 at the Us Open not too long ago, I'd say more pressure is definitely on Djokovic in this one, But if Djokovic plays God Mode then its hard to sayy.. If Murray serves as well as he did 2 nights ago and really cranks up his ground strokes then it'd put Nole off his A-GAME, hope its a thriller, can't wait til it begins!

    I'm predicting a score as such (Murray in FIVE) - 6-7 6-7 7-6 7-6 18-16
oh yeah and Djokovic had 7 matchpoints in the third

It should be a battle royale. I am hoping of more of last years epic semi clash between them. I prefer Novak to win, but am totally cool with Andy winning also.

And then later on in the day.....

Wow talk about tennis losing image.

We've got like 10 more hours before the final starts and there are barely 150 posts in this thread.

150 POSTS. A couple of hourse before the final. In a men's single GS final.

LOL. Compared to like 400 in the Federer-Murray match thread.

I predict a rehashing of the 2012 Australian Open, except Murray's replacing Nadal. Djokovic in 5.

Of all the possible scenarios (and there are many), this is definitely the least likely. I don't remember Djoko choking match points. I can remember a few times however when his opponent did...

A few hard court stats for the top 4 before the final starts:

    Federer:
Winning %: #1 in open era with 83.0
    Titles: 52 (+ 14 finals)
    Masters: 15 (+ 5 finals)
    Slams: 9 (+ 2 finals)
    WTF: 6 (+ 2 finals)

    Djokovic:
    Winning %: #6 with 80.9
    Titles: 26 (+ 11 finals)
    Masters: 10 (+ 6 finals)
    Slams: 4 (+ 3 finals)
    WTF: 2 (+ 0 final)

    Murray:
    Winning %: # 10 with 77.8
    Titles: 21 (+ 12 finals)
    Masters: 8 (+ 3 finals)
    Slams: 1 (+ 3 finals)
    WTF: 0 (+ 0 final)

    Nadal:
    Winning %: # 13 with 76.5
    Titles: 11 (+ 14 finals)
    Masters: 5 (+ 6 finals)
    Slams: 2 (+ 2 finals)
    WTF: 0 (+ 1 final )

IMO, the main reason Nadal is still ahead of Murray on hard is because he's won more than 1 slam . If Murray wins the AO final, I think he'll officially become 3rd best hard court player of his era.
ETA: I also feel that if Murray wins AO, Djoko's stats are within his reach and we could see a power shift between the 2 on the surface by the time they both retire.
So this slam final is extremely significant for many reasons.

if Murray is in super serve mode a-la Fed match Djoko really needs to worry, especially how inconsistent he was with his serves.

Any good snack ideas for the match? It will be 2:30 am for me, and I'll most likely be watching alone. Need something to wake me up if I go to bed for a few hours first or keep me up if I decide to power through with no sleep.

I forgot to add (but it's self-evident) that if Djoko wins he will consolidate his status as current best hard court player and 2nd best of his era.

Snacks: popcorn, ice-cream, crackers and cheese? Nuts? Lots of possibilities :)

This has gotten under my skin more than just about anything else on the board. I can laugh at his other nicknames around here like CVAC and Eeyore, but Lance is just a bit too much.

I don't care what the haters call him. He's the #1, he's a fighter, he's fun, he's fairplay, he has personality and has a perfectly clean record . The ****s can choke on their own jealousy as much as they like. The shame is on them.

Hey Guys -- anyone know if the match is playing anywhere in NYC (bar, theater etc)? While living room couch is not bad, it's sometimes fun to watch in a loud place with a lot of people. Also does play begin at 3:30 AM EST?

I'm also surprised at the lack of interest. It is my opinion that Djoko-Murray are really the short term future of tennis. We will see a lot more slam finals between these two. And if this matchup isn't popular, tennis will suffer.

The broadcast starts at 3am (the match may start only at 3:30am. ). In the prediction league, there are currently 21 people betting on Djoko as the winner and 10 on Murray. Nadal is gonna come back and he'll be in a lot of finals again, so it won't be just Djoko/Murray in the near future!

ETA: I suspect people are not posting much before the match because they are getting some sleep in before the marathon begins :)

I hope you're right man, and it's not because of lack of interest. I really think this final is the best matchup on the current surface. I don't think any other player poses as much threat to Djokovic as Murray does. Oz Open hardcourt is Djoko's best surface, but Murray ain't too bad at it either. He made 3 of the last 4 finals (almost 4 of 4 if he had beaten Djoko last yr). I'm going for Murray in 5.

Thanks for confirming the time. Hope you're right about Nadal, but I am not so sure. His layoff was much too long. Longest of his career, and it's really hard to get back to the previous level. Look at what happened to Delpo. That being said, Nadal has responded well to setbacks in the past, so we'll see.

The people who don't like this matchup argue that their playing style is too similar. I like it. Lots of spectacular rallies in their USO final. Lots of twists and turns too because they're both so good at breaking. I'm rooting for Djoko but my husband thinks Murray will win. It should be tight and dramatic. Just the way I like my finals. :)

Your husband is wise! I think Murray will win too, unless he's tired. He's a better player than before, and he's beaten Djokovic in a slam final now. Even AO 2012 he almost beat Djoko. I guess the only problem for Muzz is that he should've finished Fed off in 4 sets. The extra 5th set might cost him dearly. And if he doesn't have a good serving day, he's gonna be screwed.

Whatever ends up costing him, it won't be that 5th set. This was the only match he played that wasn't a straight setter (not much wearout on the whole), he had a full day off before the final and he's only 25. + he has become a fitness beast thanks to Lendl. He'll be fresh and ready.

I get worried about Djokovic in big matches because I consider myself a jinx...he stopped winning Grand Slams when I started rooting for him the French last year. I feel pretty good about this one, though. I'm sure it will be close, but I think we'll be seeing the three-in-a-row. I hope he dedicates this win to Clarky ;)

Why would they need excuses when they're both in the FINAL and haven't lost yet? My god, you need to work on your logic my friend.

Djoker's going to feel the pressure in his service games, unlike when he plays other opponents. Murray's ROS is on par with Djokovic's, it's not going to be a walk in the park for either of them. Should be a good match.

Not only that, but this could be the main way tennis is played in the future.

We'll see a lot more super athletic defensive-grinders, counter-punchers or whatever you want to call them face off against one another throughout tournaments.

I just hope it develops into some form of all court play or new players find another style that is also effective against this one so that we have some variety. Maybe the actual match will surprise us.
